LLAP, baby.

netule··on An Update on Heroku
Not OP, but the "si" parameter in the URL is an individual tracking identifier, generated specifically for YouTube to see who you share the link with.
netule··on Intel will start making GPUs
If you discount recent AI-specific developments, you can trace this back further to Larrabee, Intel MIC, Xeon Phi, etc., etc., etc.
netule··on Rewrote our Python API gateway in Go and nobody cares
That's a really big if.
netule··on Peerweb: Decentralized website hosting via WebTorrent
Before LLMs became big, I used emojis in my PRs and merge requests for fun and to break up the monotony a bit. Now I avoid them, lest I be accused of being a bot.
netule··on Microsoft forced me to switch to Linux
We had a 386 DX with 32MB of RAM. I don’t think it was that uncommon. DOOM still didn’t run super smoothly, though.
netule··on Handling Long Branches
It looks like the author has renamed their blog post, and thus the link has changed: https://maskray.me/blog/2026-01-25-long-branches-in-compiler...
netule··on ThinkNext Design
I still use my old T420, though less than I used to. Coincidentally, the RAM died this week, but a $30 investment later, and it lives again. At this point, I think I've repaired or replaced every single swappable component aside from the display.

netule··on Quake 1 Single-Player Map Design Theories (2001)
Yes, and also, how would a "bad mapper" know they're one without feedback? Seems like a bit of curmudgeony gatekeeping.
netule··on On privacy and control
Care to elaborate?
netule··on 2025 was a disaster for Windows 11
It's been a death by a thousand cuts over the years. The only reason I still had a Windows partition was to play specific games that couldn't run using Proton on Linux. The start menu's inability to be moved to the left side of the screen was the last straw for me. It sounds pedantic, but that's where I've had my start menu forever, and I'm not about to change yet another thing in my workflow.

At this point, if a game won't run under Proton because of an intrusive rootkit, I'd simply rather not play it.

Edit: I specifically mean the start bar vertically aligned on the left side of the screen, with the start button in the top-left corner, not at the bottom-left.

netule··on Why I think Valve’s retiring the Steam Deck LCD
Why should they? Do you think the phone refresh cycle is a healthy one to emulate?
netule··on Firefox will have an option to disable all AI features
It kind of sucks that this isn’t a core feature of the browser, but the AI stuff will be. At least Firefox sync is good enough to sync extensions.
netule··on GPT Image 1.5
There's definitely a case of miscommunication at play if you didn't read cynicism into my original post. I broadly agree with you, but I'll leave it at that to prevent further fruitless arguing about specifics.
netule··on GPT Image 1.5
Suddenly, copyright doesn't matter anymore when it's no longer useful to the narrative.
netule··on I don't care how well your "AI" works
Right, and as a hiring manager, I'm more inclined to hire junior devs since they eventually learn the intricacies of the business, whereas LLMs are limited in that capacity.

I'd rather babysit a junior dev and give them some work to do until they can stand on their own than babysit an LLM indefinitely. That just sounds like more work for me.

netule··on Trump administration eliminates protections for endangered species
Undermining the claims of giving control back to individual states is of course the real truth of the matter, which will eventually bite the conservationist groups currently supporting this move in the ass:

> Mr. Trump has made oil and gas production a centerpiece of his presidency and sought to strip away environmental regulations that impede development.

netule··on Mozilla says it's finally done with Onerep
Good. I really wish Mozilla would rely less on these shady backroom deals and open up to direct user funding. The Mozilla Foundation accepts donations, but they don't go toward funding Firefox; instead, they fund advocacy campaigns.

> Firefox is maintained by the Mozilla Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mozilla Foundation. While Firefox does produce revenue — chiefly through search partnerships — this earned income is largely reinvested back into the Corporation. The Mozilla Foundation’s education and advocacy efforts, which span several continents and reach millions of people, are supported by philanthropic donations.[1]

netule··on Stanford Prison Experiment
It seemed strange to me that Zimbardo inserted himself into the experiment as a participant, and not to mention figuring out what he was actually trying to measure; too many variables.
netule··on Rebecca Heineman has died
Rest in peace, Burger Becky! I really enjoyed her interview with CoRecursive a few years ago about porting DOOM to the 3DO[1] and highly recommend a listen.

netule··on Neuroscientists track the neural activity underlying an “aha”
Agreed. Although if you enjoy this very specific type of puzzle, I’d recommend a game called “Connections,” which, as the name suggests, is all about making these mental connections between words.
netule··on Writerdeck.org
I used to try and optimize my distraction-free writing setup, until I realized that by doing so I was distracting myself from writing. I’ve come to realize that if you want to write, then just write. It sounds oversimplified, but that’s the crux of it. Once you get over the initial hill and form the habit of writing, tools no longer matter.
netule··on Copyright winter is coming (to Wikipedia?)
To add to your points, Wikipedia also generally cites its sources, whereas LLMs do not. I believe this is a significant distinction.
netule··on Who still uses cash?
I scroll past the initial paragraph only for this message to appear:

> You`ve browsed for a while—now unlock all features with a free account and never miss a post!

A while? This is my first visit to your random site.

netule··on Laptops with Stickers
I started putting them on the covers of my notebooks instead. Gives me a brand new canvas to besmirch every few months.
netule··on SeaGL 2025
Looks like it was fixed since yesterday.
netule··on SeaGL 2025
The SSL cert used is only valid for atlantis.seagl.org, so the site is blocked on Firefox.
netule··on Linux gamers on Steam cross over the 3% mark
They likely stopped using them altogether.
netule··on It's insulting to read AI-generated blog posts
I’ve found that the kinds of people who leave comments or send emails tend to fall into two categories:

1. They’re assholes.

2. They care enough to speak up, but only when the thing stops working as expected.

I think the vast majority of users/readers are good people who just don’t feel like engaging. The minority are vocal assholes.

netule··on Tinnitus Neuromodulator
This appears to be brown noise, not white noise.

I have no affiliation with this macOS app, but I use it for the same reasons you do. It's paid, but worth it IMHO. It generates the noise on your own machine, and you can pick what kind of noise you want to hear: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/brown-noise-ambient-noise/id15....
