nettletea··on Why I no longer contribute to Stack Overflow
I have a few moans about SO, but I also find it very useful. I bear no flair.

The one thing that niggles me most on the web in general, is continuous reinvention. If you must paraphrase someone else's work then do. However most of the time a simple link would suffice. The same for repeat/similar questions. And it's always good to reference your sources.

You seriously mean to tell me that the most popular search on Google for 2013 is 'Paul Walker' followed by 'iPhone 5s'? What? Surely 'Weather' would be higher. I simply don't know what I'm looking at here.

It's a hideous UI, all I want is a text list of top searches for the year, and to be able to filter by category.

Stealing my touch scroll isn't that nice either. I struggled to read beyond the fold.

nettletea··on Facebook reveals friends list even when it’s set to private
Are you sure about the IP history? That doesn't make much sense to me. I work in a building with a shared internet collection with other offices. It may appear to Facebook that all traffic for that building comes from the same IP. Would Facebook then suggest every person that uses the building to me as a friend?

There is a possibility that if you have multiple Facebook accounts and use the same browser for each, a cookie could be used to link the two. Just because two people use the same computer and the same browser to login to Facebook does not mean they are friends. You might be using a public terminal.

Facebook could match a specific browser session with user visits to other sites that have Facebook features. Your digital fingerprint could be determined through your browsing habits. You don't need to be logged in for that. That would be pretty insidious of Facebook. I'm not a fan of 3rd party JS scripts in that respect.

I've seen friend suggestions that are linked to my email account that I've signed up with. I think this is an email address book leak. Perhaps it's possible to discover someone's work contacts say by just signing up with that someones email address (say a work address). I'm not sure if the email needs to be verified before this information is leaked.

nettletea··on Zurb Foundation 5 Released
Someone appears to have fixed this. The main content was showing below the left sidebar. ( I have Chrome's default font as Android Sans, that might have had something to do with it).
nettletea··on Zurb Foundation 5 Released
Chrome zoomed in at 125% is enough to break the layout on the getting started page, which is a little worrying.
nettletea··on Browser logos
I assume you mean Epiphany's logo of an earth with a pointer on top. Is an image of the earth synonymous with viewing web pages? Not really, but an image of the earth has global connotations. Nightly's logo looks like an earth from space (at night), with little dots between cities/nodes I guess representing both lights and communications. It's not that obvious and doesn't translate well. The pointer on the Epiphany logo feels a little dated.

At least the Navigator wheel conjures up the idea that I'm out at sea at the helm. A little romantic I know. I quite like the image on William Gibson's book virtual light, the idea of virtual glasses.

nettletea··on Read less HN
Time is precious.

The issue I have with HN (and other Forums), is that there is a lot of repetition in the comments. In part on HN this is probably not helped as it's difficult to overview and digest threads, especially if the comment trees are large. Comment verbosity and positional changes also make it difficult.

I think that is why in part people come, post, then move on. Necro-posting, even a day late is pretty pointless if you want to add to the general discussion.

I think I'd rather comments have a character limit. Or to get people to post summaries of their posts as titles. And/or some tl;dr; post mortems on comment threads.

nettletea··on Browser logos
When you see all these logos in a list, none of them particularly shout the web at me. I'm not smitten by any. The only standout one was the little spaceman with the earth in his visor's reflection. All a bit drab save for Iceweasel. I think I prefered the netscape logo.
