netfl0··on An electric crate motor you can drop into your car
I am surprised more mechanics aren’t developing conversion kits for their customers. It would be a good way to deal with the impending decline of ICE maintenance requirements.

Plus you’d think it would really scratch the gear head itches a lot of mechanics have.

It would create demand for car bodies that were well built and easily serviceable. I guess I just wish things were very modular.

I’ve seen a number of similar research projects but the issue is economic incentive and scale. Until those are addressed this is continental shelfware.

netfl0··on BMW's Electric Strategy Makes No Sense
Why is that too late, I am curious if you have any source or data for that?
netfl0··on BMW's Electric Strategy Makes No Sense
This was my thought as well. Regarding modularity, batteries seem to be the easiest to deal with. I was always impressed with Tesla’s idea of laptop batteries, it essentially has not changed much. Lots of little batteries.

I hear you but I would like something new.

The closest concept that tickled my fancy was the Bollinger B1.

It was close but it was missing something as simple as airbags. I want a utility vehicle I can spray out with a hose, throw kayaks in, and seat 5 adults. For 30K, please?

Interesting analysis, but I wonder if they have plans the author is not aware of.

BMW knows Tesla is eating their 3 series lunch. I’d be surprised if they had nothing up their sleeve.

netfl0··on Ask HN: Any Advice for SAD Sufferers?
Strength training has been the single most effective way for me to influence my emotional state.

Strength training is different from ‘exercise’ in that you’re progressively becoming stronger over time by repeating the stress and adapt cycle to build lean muscle, bone density, neuromuscular capacity, and joint strength.

The chemicals/hormones this natural process produce reshape your perception of the world. It’s really powerful stuff. And it’s really easy to do.

There are excellent programs to accomplish this which even if done poorly produce dramatic results.

I’m speaking from personal experience.

netfl0··on The Great Public Market Reckoning
Ah, I was using public in the sense of a publicly traded corporation. Meaning, the public has access to ownership and that the corporation cannot decide who gets to own shares.
netfl0··on The Great Public Market Reckoning
> Public corporate ownership is all very well, I'm not in principle against it in certain areas.

I assume you're not against the publicly traded stock market, just clarifying since others may interpret this as such.

> However what I suspect you are advocating is enforced public ownership.

This is not the conclusion I come to, I do not believe my original post suggests this.

> Forcing universal public ownership and prohibiting private enterprise is oppression, pure and simple.

This was not my viewpoint. I am imagining quite the opposite. If the liability is dispersed, so should ownership. If the ownership is private, the liability should be private. I believe both are critically necessary. These feels like a conservative(dictionary version) viewpoint.

netfl0··on The Great Public Market Reckoning
Corporate structures are designed to disperse liabilities in a tragedy of the commons sort of way. Therefore, what is the moral rationale for a “private” corporation, or for that matter any liability limiting instrument for private parties.

Public corporate ownership makes a lot of sense to me.

(I was hoping this would spur interesting discussion)

netfl0··on The “New Energy Economy”: An Exercise in Magical Thinking
> spending $1 million on utility-scale wind turbines, or solar panels will each, over 30 years of operation, produce about 50 million kilowatt-hours (kWh)—while an equivalent $1 million spent on a shale rig produces enough natural gas over 30 years to generate over 300 million kWh.

Six times more is not with the externalized costs. Maybe if it was 100X or 1000X there would be an argument. This lays bare the faulty reasoning.

netfl0··on AgileFall – When Waterfall Sneaks Back into Agile

AirPods becoming a screenless iPhone is much different than AirPods having cellular connectivity.

A screen provides significant bandwidth to the human. Simply reducing the bandwidth to pure audio is likely insufficient but for only a few use cases.
