neonnoodle··on Tuna species popular in sashimi and poke bowls in sharp decline
I started casually watching the reality TV series "Deadliest Catch" about 15 years ago, and became a regular viewer since then. In that time span:

- the amount of Bering Sea ice has dropped significantly

- the amount of 100-year storms has increased

- crab numbers have decreased

- crab seasons have been outright canceled due to major population collapses

- crab that remain are seeking deeper/colder water

As much dissembling as people want to do about climate change, you can see with your own two eyes the difference between season 1 and now. They almost never mention climate change on the show. They complain a lot about how "regulations" are destroying the fishermen's livelihood.

Why? Reaganomics. It's the late 1980s--they shut down the plant and shipped your job overseas. Real wages flatten and stay flat. But not to worry! The products you love are now cheaper (albeit slightly crappier). You buy the cheaper thing more out of necessity than real "choice," since Baumol's cost disease is making everything but consumer goods outrageously expensive. There are more expensive versions of some products, but they're often just overpriced faux-luxury trim on the same junk. Luxury goods stay good, since the wealthy have several orders of magnitude more than you ever will in 1000 lifetimes. There used to be...what did they used to call it? A "middle class"...

neonnoodle··on Krita 5.2
I prefer to do digital sketching/painting on an iPad these days, but on desktop I’m using increasingly more FOSS-based software. Adobe products are sometimes absolutely essential but between Krita, Inkscape and Blender I feel pretty confident for most digital image manipulation. It’s actually kind of a golden age of usable free software these days for artists!
neonnoodle··on Krita 5.2
I recently started doing more vector work as preliminary layouts/color flatting for digital painting in other apps and Inkscape has come a long way.

The energy you can muster to go back and learn more Blender will pay off in the long term imo.

Blender is like the Swiss Army knife program of my dreams.

neonnoodle··on Archaeologists extract DNA of ancient Israelites
Human genetic diversity on the whole is very, VERY low compared to other species. The superficial physical variation we associate with ethnic diversity (skin tone, nose shape, lip shape, hair color/texture, eye folds and angles) are genetically insignificant compared to their visual impact.

This is sketchy as hell. The same content is mirrored at several other pages, "bforbones.com" and "sciencefairtooth.com." The name servers point to "thankyoudentist.com," a dental review web site with no content. The address and phone are also associated with "buyxraysonline.com."

Given what investigations have uncovered about other "ethically sourced" biological specimens sold online for crafts...

I associate cubism with multiple viewing angles of a single thing, as opposed to multiple things viewed from a single angle. But definitely agreed that cubism was a rediscovery of a lot of earlier artistic traditions of interpretation that fell out of favor during the ascendance of "realism."

There's also a hypothesis that the multiple superimposed legs drawn on certain cave paintings is a proto-animation. For example the boar from Altamira whose legs are in various poses of its stride.

The wonderful thing about Storrow Drive—it’s a MAJOR ARTERY that is integral to traffic flow in downtown Boston. Since Boston has so many students, September 1st is like an informal holiday[^1] where we wait for newcomers to Storrow their U-Hauls.

[^1]: actually one of two September 1 holidays observed. The other is “Allston Christmas,” when the streets of a popular student neighborhood are filled with free furniture people tossed out when they moved.

neonnoodle··on Turn your backyard into a biodiversity hotspot
I made a bubble pump, but it's still very much a work in progress. A lot of the circulation is just "traffic" of all the little dudes swimming around. I recommend watching some of David Pagan Butler's videos on organic pools. https://www.youtube.com/user/davidpaganbutler
neonnoodle··on Turn your backyard into a biodiversity hotspot
During the process of buying our house, one of the disclosures was that the house has a huge inground swimming pool, but some aspect of the plumbing was broken, and nobody knew how much it might cost to repair. So, as-is.

Nobody in our house swims, and the costs of repairing and running the pool would be excessive. At first I thought about having it drained and either removed or converted to some kind of outbuilding space. Then it occurred to me, I shouldn't just dispose of a water-bearing structure! The thing is engineered to safely contain thousands of gallons! We kept it. The pool hadn't been used in several years prior to the sale of the house, which was perfect because the chlorination had long since evaporated. Thus a readymade freshwater pond.

I started adding native plants and sheltering areas to the shallow end. Frogs were already in residence for mating season but now several species live there full time. Tons of insects: backswimmers, water skimmers, caddisfly, mayfly, damselfly and dragonfly larvae, bladder snails, giant water beetles. Ducks and herons visit. Purple martins and flycatchers hang out at dusk.

People often ask about mosquito control, and so far it hasn't been an issue. I believe this is due to a combination of the water depth (mosquitos prefer very shallow and still water like puddles), circulation speed, and predation of the mosquito larvae by everyone else. Because there are marginal plants, predatory insects can transition from their aquatic larval stage to adulthood (they need stalks to climb up out of the water).

The pond has become one of the great joys of my life--seeing the seasons change through the lifecycles of the species, watching bees forage on pickerel rush flowers, hearing frogs sing at night.

neonnoodle··on The U.S. added 517,000 jobs in January, much better than 187,000 expected
In a high cost-of-living place like greater Boston, that's just not true. For example, consider a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 young children), living in a 2-bedroom apartment in eastern Massachusetts:

- 100,000 household income, about 1/3 of that is going directly to income tax. Net is going to be maybe $70-78,000.

- average 2-bedroom apartment rent is around $2800-3200/month: call it $34,000/year. (Because they rent, they can't benefit from mortgage interest tax deduction.) This doesn't include utilities, which have gone bonkers in MA the past few years.

- Childcare/preschool for young kids in Massachusetts is between 15-20,000 PER CHILD PER YEAR. Our example family could be paying $30,000 a year for childcare so both parents can work.

- It's possible that one or both parents are still repaying student loans at 7% interest. Let's say only one parent has a student loan payment, $300/mo which is a little under the average for MA. $3,600/year.

- This example assumes that nobody in the family owns a car! While I know families with young children who get by on public transit only, it can be difficult even in the heart of a city.

neonnoodle··on Do we live in a society without a counterculture?
The medium is the message dudes. At this point in history, what will qualify a true counterculture is NOT BEING ONLINE. Whatever the true counterculture will be, it won’t be subject to the Internet and its all-seeing eye. It won’t be made out of memes and flame wars. No matter what the political bent, we’re all very much a captive audience online. “Master’s house/master’s tools” and all that.
