neofrommatrix··on People who refused to go back to the office and lost their jobs
Is there any data to support this claim? Or, is this one of those "fraud" claims that are may be 1 or 2 cases being used to get rid of the entire process?
neofrommatrix··on People who refused to go back to the office and lost their jobs
You see, optimizing the three factors you mentioned does not increase shareholder value. They don’t care about society, the environment or work-life balance.

I polled my network of about 30 people in tech to get a rough idea of who preferred hybrid vs. in-office. Almost all managers of people wanted it to be in-office. Not even hybrid. Bad survey, but still.
neofrommatrix··on Gukesh becomes the youngest chess world champion in history
You should read about the amount of sacrifices he and his parents did. Chess is very expensive if you want to be a professional and progress to the GM title.

18. The answer is 18.
neofrommatrix··on Perplexity is selling coffee and swag now?
I mean, why? It seems like they are all over the place.
neofrommatrix··on Ask HN: What were the best books you read this year?
I discovered Noam Chomsky last year. Read “How the world works”, “Understanding Power” and “Manufacturing Consent”. Absolutely blown away.

I’ve seen so many Tesla bumper stickers that say “bought this car before Elon went crazy” that it doesn’t seem to be an isolated sentiment.
neofrommatrix··on Performance improvement plans are on the rise
Maybe they like the power, and this makes them feel powerful. Signs of a good manager, of course. /s

neofrommatrix··on Ask HN: What Are You Thankful For?
My kid (4 now) - he’s healthy and growing normally. Sweet, kind and gentle. Has a speech delay but I can see he tries hard. Changed my perspective on life.
neofrommatrix··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
LG microwave that cost $2300 and died just out of warranty. I swear it’s as if the companies program them to die just out of warranty. Now, we probably have to spend another $500 to get it fixed. The LG service charges $150 just to come home and diagnose an issue.

Then there’s the entire Amazon Echo ecosystem. Amazon’s Eero routers - cost $600 or something from what I remember, but they add on a stupid subscription on top for that for features that should be free and are free on other routers.

neofrommatrix··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
The roborock is pretty good. Although, it’s a Chinese company, so there’s that.
neofrommatrix··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
For me it was more about the cables than the smart features.
neofrommatrix··on Database full of 1000+ validated problems that can be turned into applications
Yep; anyone using that deserves to have their idea in the DB..
neofrommatrix··on Amazon won't accept written communication
Can you reach out to their support chat through an order (dispute an order or something) and ask to be rerouted to the right support team?
neofrommatrix··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
Yes; let’s do what the companies and billionaires want in solidarity with our blue collar worker peers. Let’s not stick together and work for the benefit of everyone. We should be demanding better conditions for everybody.
neofrommatrix··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
The assumption being made is the most valuable people can be replaced by a couple of “less valuable” ones by make them toil harder and re-learn all knowledge the valuable ones had.
neofrommatrix··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
And this, folks, is why companies and billionaires win..
neofrommatrix··on The 'Return to Office' Lies
One of my wife’s female bosses was completely lacking in empathy when my wife had our baby. She wanted my wife to come in every single day after her maternity leave even though her company was hybrid. According to her, taking care of a baby and toddler is no big deal. It was so disheartening especially coming from a woman.

And then she revealed that she had a nanny flown in from her country and the nanny handled everything kid related. Don’t be this kind of a boss.

neofrommatrix··on Startup Founder Who Sold A.I. Chatbot to Schools Is Charged with Fraud

I clicked on that link expecting the founder to be on the Forbes 30 under 30. And, she’s on that list. That list’s brand has gone down.

neofrommatrix··on Ask HN: Have you found any unusual hacks for motivation [that work]?
Visualizing failure has helped me. It’s well researched, I believe.

Andrew Huberman popularized this recently, but I realized I have been using it from much before that and did not even realize it.

neofrommatrix··on 3 years ago, VCs in Bay Area tech were thriving. Now, they're 'bleeding cash.'
Wait; all they need to do is operate in founder mode, no?
neofrommatrix··on Trump said can't run in 28 unless 'something' is figured out: Could it happen?
Haha!
neofrommatrix··on The brain summons deep sleep for healing from life-threatening injury
He transfuses his son’s plasma to stay young.
neofrommatrix··on The brain summons deep sleep for healing from life-threatening injury
Nope; I've come to terms with fact that we all are going to die someday. And, it is a good thing. :-)
neofrommatrix··on How to migrate from X to Bluesky without losing your followers
It’s apparent that design decisions are made keeping Musk in mind. I won’t be surprised if a lot of people have blocked Musk on X as they don’t want to see propaganda being spewed. And, he wants them to see it. I cannot think of any other reason why this decision was made. Are there any?
neofrommatrix··on The brain summons deep sleep for healing from life-threatening injury
I had a minor accident on my second day in the US and had bruises and cuts on my arms and shoulders. Did not go to the doc since my insurance was not yet covered (at a university). I felt really sleepy after and my roommates told me I slept for 24 hours straight. For me, that sleep was the deepest I have ever slept. Felt like I had lost time. I felt much better after and the body had begun its job of healing and at some places almost healed it. That was at 22. I miss that level of healing now after 20 years.
neofrommatrix··on A stubborn computer scientist accidentally launched the deep learning boom
I had a similar experience when I wanted to focus on NN research in 2007. My advisor had the wrong incentives. FML.
