nemo8551··on My favorite prime number generator
Thanks all, I hadn’t considered that but we do only use it for silly things and nothing work related but it’s worth a consideration.
nemo8551··on My favorite prime number generator
Can I just say how surprised I am the many people have a favourite prime number generator.

I can’t say I have a favourite but I do enjoy multiplying two random prime numbers with each other and using the random result when I need a random number with added random.

nemo8551··on Meaningful exits for founders (2016)
They strap boots.

To be honest I’m amazed there is that amount of money in it but they must be very good at it.

nemo8551··on Theory of interstellar trade (1978) [pdf]
That’s tremendous, can you imagine the initial conversations?
nemo8551··on Peter Shor's MIT Fall 2022 course lecture notes on quantum computing
Thanks for this, I’ll give this a watch.
nemo8551··on Vim Boss
I have to agree here, I’ve worked on some tremendously complex control systems and the documentation has been so good that anytime I’ve needed info it was easy to find.

I’ve also worked on relatively simple systems that have required more interrogation due to a lack of, or in one case absolutely terrible documentation.

nemo8551··on UPS driver pay and benefits deal in US to be worth $170k a year, firm says
It looks like ups have decided that they want to pay their drivers something in the region of $175,000 in order to do their business though.

If they didn’t want to pay that then they could pay less but then those drivers might not think that’s fair and then go work for someone else, it might not be for $175k but it’s their choice at that point.

nemo8551··on Infrastructure audit completed by Radically Open Security
I would have liked it if the audit had also provided a number of logins to be used on that server to act like typical users. Just so it was operating as a normal server would.

This could have led onto auditing a live server.

Auditing an in use customer facing server would definitely require a good amount of controls to ensure the auditors didn’t log any possible customer data.

nemo8551··on J-CIA64 – Modern spare part for Commodore 64, Commodore 128, SX-64
Well that’s just like your opinion man.

But I get it, it’s really hard to accurately replace legacy components as time moves on, it probably will feel like one but as it’s not all original it will never meet an unattainable expectation.

nemo8551··on Team management tips: 10 more ways to kill a team
The sheer amount of variables for what makes a good manager in what situation is mind boggling.

I was a manager a while back, then back to an engineer at another company and now I’m an engineering manager at a new one. I think there are soft skills that have translated well across the roles but each business has needed a different managerial approach.

There might be really niche blogs out there about managing in certain environments but I can’t say I actively search them out.

nemo8551··on ChatGPT and Bard answers “Do Fahrenheit and Celsius have a linear relationship?”
I read a decent bit on here the other day about a good use for ai with copilot.

It was loading up data sheets and being able to query them.

I.e. what’s the power draw at full load of x or y chip at ambient temperature for this board or component.

It would give you the answer along with a citation to the datasheet.

I think a lot more of the ai systems need to give real, linkable citations.

nemo8551··on Run Firefox on ChromeOS
Maybe folk who are issued a chrome book for whatever reason and like their setup on Firefox?

Either that or it’s “because we can”.

nemo8551··on Amazon requires services on Fire TV to give it 30% of ad impressions or revenue
I’m totally not saying I agree and would definitely do it myself……but yes.

100% yes.

I’ve been plex for a while but jellyfin looks like I might have a choice of service in future.

nemo8551··on The Reluctant Sysadmin's Guide to Securing a Linux Server
It might be a bit corporate now but a few years back I found the security aspects of the redhat admin training to be decent enough for most folk.
nemo8551··on Threads users down by more than a half
For me mastodon is where I get my cybersecurity and infosec chat from now. HN is my generic techy stuff Reddit replacement, insta for mountain biking and twitter is for lower league Scottish football- it’s very well setup on there.

I’m not sure where threads sat for me, it was all the same folk who I follow on instagram but only posting text, now they post pics on thread and their reels on insta.

I’m not fully up on all the fedoverse stuff but I think that’s just due to a lack of effort so far.

nemo8551··on Show HN: Selecta – Tune Your Own Spotify Recommendation Algorithm
Cheers, going to give it a look.
nemo8551··on Show HN: Strollhunt – Like Pokémon Go but you learn about the city by playing
I love the idea of this but could it work without needing all the linked data? I get that it has to track you but it seems a bit heavy on the linked data. At least on iOS.
nemo8551··on Show HN: Ditch Datasheets
With something like this would I be able to load in a custom set of data, data sheets etc and keep the whole thing as an offline reference for a certain subject?

The citation part is incredibly useful even if that’s not the case.

nemo8551··on Show HN: I'm launching a newsletter, which will save your hours of research
What does this offer me over the plethora of other newsletters out there? Not being negative, just asking as there wasn’t much detail on the linked page.
