nekoashide··on Starlink speeds in US dropped from 105Mbps to 53Mbps in the past year
People were tossing traditional internet satellites from roofs, chopping off the old dried up copper from the side of the house and pushing the wisp tower down.

Starlink made remote living and work truly possible. No more turning off video, pixilating and worrying about data plans. And low enough latency to make up with skill in games.

But just like everything it got too popular, cellular carriers are trying to service that market though and t-mobile might be a last mile internet provider with decent speeds and unlimited data. But, fiber is also getting buried all over rural areas to help with this as well.

Between fiber/cellular and Starlink people are going to get interesting data plans for sure though. Wisp are regional and the market will shrink because the service is just inadequate and poorly maintained. The smart wisp that got federal high speed internet subsidies will survive building out fiber even in some pretty rural areas.

I have heard that some are equipped with defenses like that but those were more for heads of state.
nekoashide··on Zero Trust Strategy and Roadmap
A big problem is insiders selling information or ransoming it under the guise of a breach. Employees are the single greatest threat to any organization so behavior analytics is starting to become really big.

As I tell people, "We don't care if you browse Reddit, we only care if you start doing things an employee shouldn't".

But to answer your questions we would just ingest those alerts into Splunk, build a KB on how to handle the alerts when they trigger and then begin the process of filtering out the noise. The SOC Analyst who works these alerts will get numb to them but still pick out the unusual ones to investigate.

nekoashide··on Apple Reports Fourth Quarter Results
To the regular consumer both of those things are tied to the same ecosystem as the iPhone and people want to be seen in public with the latest gadgets. I'm not sure people feel that way about buying a new Mac.
nekoashide··on Evidence-based conclusions about ADHD
I'll give you an upvote but this doesn't intrest me
nekoashide··on Wireless ISPs embrace fiber as they face do or die moment
I was looking at a Wisp for a rural weekend home and it was 15x15Mbps for $50/month for unlimited plus $200 for the equipment on install. When I looked at t-mobile 5G home internet it was $50 for unlimited and free equipment. Although the speeds fluctuate they are still faster than the wisp.

I think It's going to be mid range 5G that kills wisp, they might be able to serve edge cases but the mobile carriers see a market for home internet. They have the technology and the spectrum to make it happen quickly and everyone already has a mobile phone.

nekoashide··on Longevity of Recordable CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays (2020)
Quality can vary a lot, back in the late 90's you had certain brands and disc you would buy because of how much extra data you could write to them and also testing to see which disc performed better at higher writing speeds. It was a big deal to some folks back then and you likely bought the high quality ones.
nekoashide··on SpaceX exploring mission to boost Hubble
It was a big deal last time and it will be an even bigger deal this time. I'm not sure they had planned for another service mission so who knows if they still have replacement gyros and hardware for it now.

Hubble is a bit old though and space is not very friendly, it seems like a risky mission but I guess the cost to service it today is cheaper than making a new one.

nekoashide··on Cloudflare Adaptive DDoS Protection
They have struggled with credential stuffing, captchas were the only way to stop our login pages from being bombarded at one time. They are getting better with it though but I would rather not lose a tool of last resort.
nekoashide··on The search for dirt on Mudge
That's why you don't request your personal file from the FBI, either they have a file on you from your youth or you have given them reason to suspect you did something at some point. I'm curious, but not that curious.
nekoashide··on Reddit's favorite products in one place
True, but I always take in information from many sources. As I type this I'm sitting next to my no name bluetooth headset from some Chinese company I have never heard from before and it's worked flawlessly for the last 6 months. I found reviews from Reddit, Amazon, Online forums and even one person who has a blog. I found enough of what I consider actual users experience. Especially on Reddit people will comment and generate back and forth conversations that give me confidence that I'm not wasting money on something that does not suit my needs.

It may not be perfect, but in Reddits case you can see a users comment history as well and if they are active on other subreddits not dedicated to a single product or set of products. Redditors also tend to overshare information about themselves, so, you can really tell who's a user and who's not. I could be wrong but it takes more than cat pictures to fool me.

nekoashide··on Reddit's favorite products in one place
Reddit is only one of the many sources I use to determine if something is worth purchasing especially from unknown sources or products that do not have a brand name attached. Just recently I was looking for a wireless card to replace the one I had in my laptop. Reddit not only gave me the the a link to the card that works for my laptop but posters also chimed in on how to install it but also gave me an idea on how it performed.

I think the most important thing that Reddit gives is a shared perspective on any purchase where people can comment on others reviews. You don't get that with Amazon, it's always a mix of 5 stars and 1 star reviews and your left to determine if these 5 star reviews are real or not. It's the same with the 1 star reviews because I feel that other vendors may negatively brigade reviews as well.

In the end information for my purchases are sourced from traditional reviews, Reddit, online forums and of course the sellers site. It's not always prevented me from buying something that doesn't work for me but Reddit has by and large been my source of trusted reviews and has never really let me down.

nekoashide··on Steve Jobs negotiates Apple's deal with Microsoft (1997)
People forget that in 1997 Microsoft was in the midst of being targeted for violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. The Apple deal not only helped a competitor (It's argued that Apple was a hardware company and Microsoft a Software company) but it also resolved the lawsuits at the time that Microsoft had infringed on Apples GUI.

Not only that it gave Microsoft inroads into OSX though Office and Internet Explorer. The deal had Bill Gates fingerprints all over it and it could have turned out very differently had Apple not innovated itself out of it's poor financial position.

Who knows what would have happened if Apple hadn't recovered, I think this was much less of a lifeline rather than Bill wanting his software on Mac hardware.

nekoashide··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
I take exception to you casting them as having a reasonable reputation for reliability. In my experience it's a gamble for reliability, if you lose expect poor support, long repair times, and if it's out of warranty the repairs are always more than the cost of the device.
nekoashide··on Ask HN: Where can I find small companies to work for part-time?
I found that Linkedin job search can be refined to find these out of band jobs as well. When I was looking for a side hustle it helped me land a support job that was part time and after hours remote. It was a small company and there was one interview before I got the job.
nekoashide··on An employee at EpicGames wants me to fill out this questionnaire to use my OSS
We blanket send these to every vendor we use, but OSS doesn't qualify and would not get one of these from me.
nekoashide··on Xbox Series X|S Has Outsold PS5 in Japan Again
Both, granted we have 3 Wal-Mart's within 8mi and we visit one of them a few times a week.
nekoashide··on Xbox Series X|S Has Outsold PS5 in Japan Again
I have to disagree on the Xbox's, I check Wal-Mart locally every time I shop and I see them in stock most of the time. The PS5? Non existent.
nekoashide··on Why is Apache clinging to OpenOffice?
Yeah, that was me, I totally downloaded it as the first thing when setting up a new computer for years. I thought the errors opening some excel documents was because it was open source. Little did I know it was effectively abandonware.

nekoashide··on Gas pumps happen to be about as insecure as your typical router
I have first hand knowledge of this, it's been while but I remember logging into into a Ruby/Sapphire backdoor with default credentials and unmasking the credit card data if there was an issue and a credit transaction wasn't processed. This was for a large regional chain.

It's really an industry problem, everyone who works in the c-store side of things is old as dirt and doesn't understand or care about security.

nekoashide··on Show HN: Never have an SSL certificate expire again
Logos are fine as long as you have an agreement in place, but you run afoul of a number of laws by using another companies logo without their approval. Although, it seems this happens all of the time with various companies.

As for myself I turn down every request for a logo, I like and use your product but I don't really care if you cut me a small break for using it.

nekoashide··on Plan Ahead for Phase Out of 3G Cellular Networks and Service
Even if it cost nothing to upgrade you would have industry trade groups shouting from the rooftops on how terrible this is and how bad 4G is. In a previous job that required PCI compliance not even the threat of losing the ability to process credit cards would stop these trade groups.
nekoashide··on Backblaze IPO
Your not wrong, there's been a huge number of companies listing over the last year and some of questionable size and profitability. Everybody sees the market as a huge money machine and all these companies want a piece.
nekoashide··on Record share of small businesses in U.S. report job vacancies
I have done no research on this but maybe these are dual income households where one spouse stopped working to take care of children because of covid closing schools and they adapted to a single source of income. With childcare cost are there any reasons for them to go back at this point if the wages are low enough it doesn't make financial sense?
nekoashide··on Steve Jobs tried to convince Dell to license Mac software
You're looking back with all the knowledge and information today, the NeXT computer was for all it's glory just a black box. At the time Apple did not have anything like what you see now, that didn't come until the 1998 iMac and only because of Ive.

Steve Jobs would have literally done anything to save Apple, you only need to watch the 1997 Macworld Expo to see how far he was willing to go. Those people absolutely hated Gates and you can guarantee you would have seen Michael Dell on that stage if it had gone the other way.

With that said Mac Clones were a thing, Jobs even tried to keep those deals going but they did not make sense at the time. Apple for all its worth was both a hardware and software company and the clone makers would have been competition anyways.
