nchelluri··on Ask HN: Do you have personal bots?
no. kind of like the sometimes heard of painter whose house never has a decent coat of paint i rarely write any code for myself. i write code for a living.

but here are some of the little bots i've written on the dime:

- ?lunch - an eggdrop command that displayed the catered lunch that day

- scheduling bots that posted to channels who was "on call" for that day

- yeah, that's it. in terms of bots. i thought i had more but i can't think of jack

nchelluri··on Ask HN: Do you have personal bots?
cool. very cool.

(i know this is a "low content" post for hackernews, but this is a new thread with no posts, so ymmv.)

nchelluri··on Ask HN: Do you have personal bots?
that's excellent. what language, what's the design, do you have your own personal slack server, and so on.

I think you're overthinking it; I just meant, "do a few pullups every now and then, and you'll feel better."
nchelluri··on Software Is Hard (2007)
well said!

I think about this sometimes. When I was 15, and just learning to program, I thought I could code anything. And if you look at history, I was perhaps right.

Now, as a seasoned professional software developer, all I see is pitfalls everywhere...

nchelluri··on Ask HN: Where are the good jobs in Canada?
Remote work for a U.S. company :) That's what I do.

Found the position on the company website which I visited after looking at a whoishiring thread.

Could have sworn I read about this some years ago.

wow. that is a lot of money. is that for the bay area only?
nchelluri··on Canada facing ‘brain drain’ as tech talent leaves for Silicon Valley
I work in Atlantic Canada remotely for a US company. It's great pay for where I live.

I was offered three jobs at the same time. One, local, paid half of my current job. Another, remote for a company in Vancouver, paid 71.5% of my current job.

It's a good thing to attempt!

I kind of want to see that ACID comic now.
nchelluri··on Is Your Site Leaking Password Reset Links?
Thanks for the additional thought process here; just a minor question, what's an HMAC token?
nchelluri··on Is Your Site Leaking Password Reset Links?
I don't think it's so simple.

Before generating the PW reset link, someone might try to login first. So they'd enter bob@example.com into the login form and then when that failed, it's not uncommon to redirect with error-msg-in-session to /login?email=bob@example.com . So you'd leak the email first.

nchelluri··on ZMODEM
That's pretty cool, what feature did you add?
nchelluri··on ZMODEM
That's awesome :) I would have loved to get my hands on that version.

Who remembers IceZmodem? A backwards compatible protocol that allowed you to play Tetris or listen to .MOD files while downloading... and if you were downloading from an IceZmodem capable host, you'd even get increased download speeds!

nchelluri··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
What I recall reading over the last year is that:

- phonelines can be hijacked (this article)

- DNS can be hijacked in a similar manner

- SMS can be hijacked (for 2FA via text message)

I guess 2FA using an authenticator app is the way to go for now. Do you guys agree with the removal of backup phone numbers recommended here? Seems reasonable to me but scary; I've lost my phone(s :( ) before. I do have backup codes generated though.

nchelluri··on Adding a phone number to your Google account can make it less secure
That sounds like a good fix, but a tall order for most people.
nchelluri··on Angular 1.x Banned from Firefox Addons
Thanks for the clarification.
nchelluri··on Angular 1.x Banned from Firefox Addons
Curious, do you use a password wallet/manager application, and if so how do you get passwords out of it and into the browser? I'd like to know if there's a better solution. (I use a browser extension.)
nchelluri··on Angular 1.x Banned from Firefox Addons
I am not sure that I agree. It's hard for me to say where the responsibility for disclosure lies, but if I was Mozilla I'd need to find a good reason not to disclose such a vulnerability to the project owner/development team.

I am not sure that being asked not to disclose is a good enough reason without further justification; in fact it seems like a poor reason to me. Mozilla is in my view kind of a shepherd for internet users and I'd hope they'd fall more on the side of "let's not let our users get owned unnecessarily" than that of "let's sit on this vulnerability just because the disclosing party asked us to."

nchelluri··on Angular 1.x Banned from Firefox Addons
I can't help but think that he's right though. Not explicitly but implicitly. By keeping the vulnerability from the dev team they're allowing it to stay out in the wild. No?

Edit: It may be that this is only an issue inside of Firefox extensions (addons). In which case, maybe the point is moot. See: https://github.com/mozilla/addons-linter/blob/master/docs/th...

Did you see how close the guys hands were to gripping the steering wheel? Obvious he didn't trust it completely :)

Still, very cool. And the presence of cameras everywhere should help navigate insurance/accident stuff everywhere, I'd hope.

nchelluri··on C2 wiki closed for remodeling
I was going originally going to post how happy I was with the Wikipedia way of one source of truth and how I really like that system, but the fact is I don't know enough about the subject to say it's the best way. I do agree with you, though.
nchelluri··on C2 wiki closed for remodeling
> Smallest Federated Wiki is a software platform developed by Ward Cunningham which adds forking features found in software development tools like GitHub to wikis.[1] The project was launched at IndieWebCamp 2011.[2] The software allows its users to fork wiki pages, maintaining their own copies.

>

> Federation supports what Cunningham has described as "a chorus of voices" where users share content but maintain their individual perspectives.[3] This approach contrasts with the tendency of centralized wikis such as Wikipedia to function as consensus engines.[4]

In short I guess if I disagree with a page instead of editing it and starting an edit-war I can fork it.

nchelluri··on A Man Who Stood Up To Facebook
Wouldn't it (or couldn't) it be a violation of TOS to share your FB password with another site?

Does FB now have an option like Google to export your data? I thought that was a nice touch on Google's part; I vaguely remember reading it was championed by some people in the company who really wanted to avoid locking people in out of their own moral convictions.

I confess to not seeing the bigger picture here: I don't see how all of this can be equated to locking a user's data into Facebook. Would it be against TOS to write a FB app that crawled a user's graph and downloaded all of their data?

Can you explain the draw of Async I/O? A single request will not be faster, but you may get more concurrent requests going due to running some while some are waiting for I/O to finish? Is that correct?
