nchase··on A plan to turn the atmosphere into an enormous sensor
From the article:

The first 27 months of the programme will be dedicated to understanding the science behind ripples in both the ionosphere and the electrically neutral atmosphere below it, and then building computer simulations of what is going on. These will be tested to see if they can replicate accurately effects seen in the past.

Once the team have a better understanding of the basic science, they will proceed to the second stage: field trials. This will involve three tests at three-month intervals in which researchers attempt to locate pertinent events, such as storm cells, mining operations and earthquakes. If that works, the project will then move on to matters of military interest by spying on missile launches, tracking aircraft and even watching underground bunkers being dug. The result, if all goes well, may be the world’s first true panopticon.

Hopefully they spend more time on the atmospheric stuff than the military stuff. Exciting news, if the former.

nchase··on The Book of Shaders
I remember this from a year or two ago. I found it to be a useful entrypoint into a topic that I thought I'd never understand at all.

Understanding the basics of shaders has been helpful for some audio-visual tchotchkes that I have enjoyed building. Hope to learn more, over time. And I'd really love to see more of the chapters that are planned, but unavailable.

Is there a changelog that will tell us what parts of the book were updated and when they were updated?

edit – it's all on GitHub, which is also helpful given how slow the Book of Shaders website is right now: https://github.com/patriciogonzalezvivo/thebookofshaders

Is this anything like "org mode" for Vim?

I am not an org mode user, but I've heard people gush over it.

nchase··on How much do we need the police?
I didn’t see it posted here yet and wanted to spread awareness - the book that the article/interview is about is a free download here: https://www.versobooks.com/books/2426-the-end-of-policing

nchase··on Apple unveils biggest update to Logic since the launch of Logic Pro X
I'm surprised to see so few (zero?) comments specifically about the content of the update. This is an _amazing_ release from a user's perspective.

I'm a Logic user who creates modern sample-based music at a pretty rapid clip. The Quick Sampler here is pretty much perfect and it's what anyone would expect in 2020 – a tremendous replacement for EXS24.

This was a long time coming and (IMO) makes Logic almost a no-brainer for a lot of people who make music.

I agree with your comment broadly, but I think I disagree with respect to audio - have you had time to check out audio ray tracing?

nchase··on Falcon is a free, open-source SQL editor with inline data visualization
What command line tools do people use to plot data?

I'd love to be able to write some SQL and pipe to CSV or directly to a tool that will just spit out a PNG or SVG that has the data plotted.

Is gnuplot (http://www.gnuplot.info) the thing for this?

Are you on iOS? I’ve had a ton of problems with iOS and WebAudio (really anything that uses Webkit, but the issues aren’t as bad on macOS).

Didn’t play for me either on this device, but I wasn’t surprised given previous experience.
