For those curious about Julia, I just found this:

Close to C speed in a dynamic language? Seems pretty great on paper. Is this generally the case?

ncfausti··on Why I’m done with Chrome
Brave (with default search engine Qwant) has been a nice replacement. Of course, there is always Firefox/DuckDuckGo

ncfausti··on E.O. Wilson on Introversion, the Limits of IQ, and Where Ideas Come From
I think so, and iirc there are s lot of studies that have actually shown a negative relationship with conscientiousness.
ncfausti··on People Who Speed-Listen to Podcasts
Have you tried mindfulness? I have had the same experience as you have (it sounds like) in that I am able to speed listen more effectively at 2-2.5x than at 1x. Since I've started trying to be more mindful and meditate regularly, the improvement in focus I've experienced is incredible.
ncfausti··on Ask HN: How do you read programming books?
Check out How To Read A Book by Mortimer Adler. Great resource for techniques for understanding many different kinds of books.

ncfausti··on “Learning How to Learn,” the most popular course on Coursera
This. I learned that it's ok to feel dumb when learning difficult ideas, and to take a break, let your mind do some diffuse thinking, and come back to it.
ncfausti··on “Learning How to Learn,” the most popular course on Coursera
Reading this book (A Mind for Numbers) and taking the mooc changed my life. The main thing that stuck with me above all else was the idea that it's okay to feel dumb when learning new things and to push through instead of giving up. I wish I had learned that lesson much earlier.
ncfausti··on Ask HN: Is Georgia Tech's Online Master in CS Worth It?
Glad this was posted. I was admitted to Penn's MSE in CIS as well as OMSCS for the Fall. No funding for either. Penn is roughly $60k. I currently live in Philly. I'm curious to see what HN thinks would be the better option.
