nbk_2000··on Easily accessing all your stuff with a zero-trust mesh VPN
Here's a more direct link to what I was referring to:

nbk_2000··on Easily accessing all your stuff with a zero-trust mesh VPN
Privacy VPN providers are in a unique position to offer this as an add-on. NordVPN recently started offering Meshnet which effectively accomplishes the same thing as Tailscale, Zerotier etc. I vaguely recall another privacy VPN provider (maybe PIA) used to offer this as well.

Seems like a good value add-on for services that already require setting up encrypted tunnels.

nbk_2000··on The beginner's guide to overcomplicating coffee
Hario Switch is my next device to try to perfect the pour over. It gives a much needed control knob (time) to twiddle. And besides, James Hoffman likes them[1], how bad could they be? :P

nbk_2000··on Multiple Sclerosis discovery could end disease's chronic inflammation
It's not a cure, it's a very effective therapy. It has ~10 years of history and trials. The doctors I've spoken with mention interesting new studies and research associated with the therapy often, so it's still a developing area of research... research that has moved past the "...in mice" caveat.
nbk_2000··on The beginner's guide to overcomplicating coffee
Same here. I tried freshly roasted beans at Stumptown where my friend knew the roaster. By far one of the most flavorful cups I've ever enjoyed. It was a dark roast though, so not sure what that factor contributed.

If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend trying the Coimbra Protocol [1] before chasing after brand new research. It has been a game changer for those I know that tried it.

My favorite quote regarding typeface preference:

"Readers read best what they read most." - Zuzana Licko

Also, if you want to go down the rabbit hole, some good studies have been conducted on this subject [1].

nbk_2000··on An Introduction to Class Warfare for the Software Engineer
Please note the topic is "Class _Warfare_ for the Software Engineer" and NOT "Fulfilling Your Expected Role as a Software Engineer"

This is the author's opinion of how Software's Labor can "fight back"

If you're not in an adversarial relationship with your employer then this advice will not be particularly useful/advantageous.

nbk_2000··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
You can find Frantech servers for as little as $3.50/year here:

https://my.frantech.ca/aff.php?aff=3460

This is the parent company of BuyVM. They have a very good reputation, but their stock goes up and down throughout the month. If you want a specific data-center location, wait until the first of the month when stock replenishes.

nbk_2000··on Berkeley Mono Ligatures Release
You are not alone. While I can imagine a feasible use for some very commonly used glyph combinations being made a ligature, I just really prefer the one glyph per key press presentation (kerning them well OTOH is always greatly appreciated). Unicode in text editors still bugs me in that way, in the back of my mind I know that pretty non-ASCII character is taking up more than a byte, and it's... distracting.
nbk_2000··on Berkeley Mono Ligatures Release
Same here, I try out a lot of monospace fonts as they come along. But Liberation Mono just scratches all my itches so well.

I do however enjoy setting comments using fonts that aren't monospaced (which I begrudgingly acknowledge Comic Sans is actually decent for).

At some point though the old typographers adage of "people read best, what they read most" must impact our preferences.

nbk_2000··on Minimalism and the art of photography
It helps me to separate photography into two areas 1) Art 2) Documentation. If I feel like "creating something" I might challenge myself to work within certain confines. If I need to "document something", I bring the proper tools for the job.

If I didn't do this, then I wouldn't have had the joy of successfully executing pinhole photography (i.e. Art). While also capturing whales jumping out of the ocean a few feet in front of me in a small boat in the Pacific (i.e. Documentation)

nbk_2000··on ChatGPT is a ‘code red’ for Google’s search business
This has been my experience as well. When using Google I used to ignore anything not on the first page. Now I often ignore the first two pages of results, hoping to get to some content that's not SEO-optimized-auto-generated-garbage. By that point of searching though it's pretty much a hail-mary scenario.
nbk_2000··on ChatGPT is a ‘code red’ for Google’s search business
This was what I thought the article would hone in on. ChatGPT is very good at generating answers that look correct, and unique, but are wrong. This is gold for SEO focused content creators, as it will generate plenty of engagement with people who don't know enough to be able to fact check the answers they are receiving to their questions.

I foresee this opening an epic echo chamber of "truthy" sounding content, which could potentially make Google's indexing approach useless.

This is how I've always heard it categorized, since at least the early 90's.
nbk_2000··on Yerba Mate – A Long but Current History (2021)
Traditionally it's the job of the one preparing/serving the mate (the cebador) to take the first sips until it tastes right. So it's entirely up to you if you want to spit it out. Just make sure that by the time you offer it to someone else, that it's tasting good.
nbk_2000··on Yerba Mate – A Long but Current History (2021)
If you love La Merced Barbacua, try to get a hold of some of the Barbacua from Sol y Lluvia, it's by far the best smoked yerba I've ever had!
nbk_2000··on Yerba Mate – A Long but Current History (2021)
Depends upon which flavor you find objectionable. If you don't like the taste of very strong green tea, then yerba mate may not be for you. However there are several other factors that can lead to yerba mate tasting bad. First is the quality and freshness of the yerba. It should be 6 months or less since it was packaged (check date stamps). It should be made with 80-85* C water (too hot, and it will be super bitter). Whether the yerba has stems (palitos) or not (despalada) can make a difference, stems contribute a bitter taste to the drink. As has been mentioned, knowing how to load the mate and get it primed can also have an effect (ideally, you're going for a slightly nutty, green tea flavor, with a tiny bit of sweetness). It also needs to be a high quality brand, which can be very difficult to obtain outside of S.America. Some high quality brands are:

- Taragui (Argentina) - La Merced (Argentina) - Union (Argentina) - Canarias (Uruguay) - Sara (Uruguay)

For preparing mate cold (called tereré) - La Rubia (Paraguay) - Pajarito (Paraguay)

... and though highly controversial, you can add sweetner to it to make it less bitter, at least until you palette adapts. But be prepared to be chided with "si no es amargo, no es mate" if mate connoisseurs catch you doing this.

I agree that would be insightful. Many times when taking interactive tests I wonder "Is it just me, or was that not the obvious answer?"

nbk_2000··on How to make fermented hot sauce (2021)
If it's the flavor you like, and just want to add heat, you can augment the heat with a high scoville neutral chili. I've done this before by adding habanero or high scoville cayenne after the ferment is several days in.
