nbernard··on Song banned from Swedish charts for being AI creation
The humans are neither a race nor conscious. They're humans.
nbernard··on Logistics Is Dying; Or – Dude, Where's My Mail?
Sounds literary, if a bit grandiloquent, more than anything. It was once considered "good style" and books from the XIXth and XXth centuries are full of such sentences. See the works of James Jeans, John McPhee, Carl Sagan, and the like for instance.
nbernard··on Albert Michelson's Harmonic Analyzer (2014) [pdf]
Not exactly what you are looking for, but you may still want to take a look at Moore's /Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy/. IIRC, it contains a section on the evolution of machining since the early 1800s and covers the transition between the making of parts made to fit together, to parts made to specs.

BTW, in later parts of the book, Michelson appears as interferometry is used to check the accuracy of parts.

nbernard··on Ask HN: Advice for creating a USB device linking 2 computers
Probably not the cheapest nor the easiest way, but take a look at Cynthion: https://greatscottgadgets.com/cynthion/

On the hardware side, it probably has what you need (and more).

nbernard··on Alibaba cloud FPGA: the $200 Kintex UltraScale+
And now... 59 sold, more than 10 available!
nbernard··on Ask HN: Do people lose interest in TeX/LaTeX after leaving academia?
None taken! :)
nbernard··on NFS at 40 – Remembering the Sun Microsystems Network File System
AFS (on which DFS was based) lives on as OpenAFS [0]. And there is a commercial evolution/solution from AuriStor [1].

nbernard··on Alibaba cloud FPGA: the $200 Kintex UltraScale+
> Lots still available on eBay

Probably not for long: only 7 available now...

nbernard··on Ask HN: Do people lose interest in TeX/LaTeX after leaving academia?
Left academia, still using LaTeX for about every document (not counting org-mode documents for my own use).

At this point, using "common" text processors (Word, Writer, ...) still (?) feels like torture.

nbernard··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
Scientific text editors, you mean? ;)

I suspect it is actually worse than that and that they are actually subject to the Lindy effect ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindy_effect ).

nbernard··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
> If you're routinely using LaTeX to write papers, the time spent learning something new isn't comparably large.

I don't know. By then aren't you quite comfortable with LaTeX?

It may be Stockholm syndrome and sunk costs speaking, but I'm using LaTeX all the time: I quite like it and I don't feel any need for something else to replace it...

nbernard··on Ask HN: Casual Math Book Suggestions
I enjoyed T. W. Körner's The Pleasures of Counting ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/0521568234 ).
nbernard··on The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer
As I understand it, dns0.eu is run by a french non-profit and has no actual connection with the EU.
nbernard··on The European public DNS that makes your Internet safer
To a french ear, it sounds like a (bad) translation from English.

For instance, "a été testée au combat" is meaningless in French. The same idea in idiomatic French would be "a subi l'épreuve du feu". And I guess the "billions" should be only "milliards" (French uses the long scale, so the word "billion" exists but corresponds to a thousand billions as understood in (US?) English)...

nbernard··on Thoughts on thinking
I don't remember if it was the case for the TI-92+, but some calculators can show the intermediate steps, or at least some of them.
nbernard··on Don't sell space in your homelab (2023)
> they walk in, shut the power and start hauling drives.

Or, if they suspect disk encryption, they don't shut the power. Instead, they dissect the power cords to add a special UPS, so that they can move servers without powering them off...

nbernard··on Ask HN: What books have been worth your time?
Another story involving many of these topics is told in Ada Palmer's Terra Ignota series. Very different (less space opera, more history) but quite interesting too.
nbernard··on PrintedLabs – 3D printable optical experiment equipment
For those interested, there is also OpenUC2 on this niche: https://github.com/openUC2/UC2-GIT It would be interesting to see how the two systems compare.
nbernard··on Ask HN: Should there be new RPN calculators to replace the TI-84?
Not really true anymore unfortunately: The latest models (post-2020?) are locked down and cannot use non-official FW.
nbernard··on Ask HN: Can you recommend a good nuclear power plant simulator?
Then, you have Mindustry and its thorium reactors. IIRC, they don't need to be connected to turbines like in Factorio to generate power, however bad things (TM) happen if they are destroyed or if their coolant supply is disrupted...
nbernard··on Work at the Mill Or, the Story of Digital Equipment Corporation
What do you think of IDR, for Intergalactic Digital Research (which later dropped the 'I') ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Research
nbernard··on Tell HN: Cloudflare is blocking Pale Moon and other non-mainstream browsers
Check that you are allowing webworker scripts, that did the trick for me. I still have issues on slower computers (Raspberry pies and the like) as they seem to be to slow to do whatever Cloudflare wants as a verification in the allotted time, however.
nbernard··on Seagate: 'new' hard drives used for tens of thousands of hours
Thanks! I just checked an 10TB Ironwolf bought to a German seller through Amazon.fr less than two months ago: Its warranty expires in a few days... :(
nbernard··on Ask HN: What do you look for in a work monitor?
I don't care for high refresh rates or high DPI, but:

- matte surface

- effective* vertical res >= 1200 px (*: meaning that, for instance, 1440 with 2.0 scaling counts as 720 px only).

- ability to rotate (not a must, but nice to have).

nbernard··on Ask HN: What were the best books you read this year?
More a "must try" than a "must read". I enjoy reading SF, and didn't like the Hyperion and Endymion series...
nbernard··on Ask HN: Separating Two Glass Containers
Seconded. In chem labs, it happens quite often that glass labware pieces get stuck together. The gentle application of a wooden mallet is the usual solution...
nbernard··on Ask HN: Anyone learned art (drawing, caricature etc.) as an adult?
Yes. Yet, in my mind, for some peoples and/or subjects (drawing buildings, interiors where perspective is important, etc.), it may be easier to do the exact opposite. Meaning, to learn instead¹ how to construct an accurate perspective view from descriptive geometry, until it becomes second nature and one can then skip the geometric construction (or at least make it less exact and time consuming, closer to what's described in Robertson's "How to Draw" for instance).

¹: I wrote "instead", but of course both ways complement each other.

nbernard··on Quote Origin: I had exactly four seconds and Google had told me it wasn’t enough
Well... Wernher von Braun wrote a SF novel in which the first mission to Mars discovers native Martians. These live underground and use hyperloop-like tunnels for transportation, and their leader is called the "elon"...
nbernard··on Deep-Tempest: Using Deep Learning to Eavesdrop on HDMI
I heard one of the issues is to prevent leaks through the ground connection. It seems special circuits ("crypto grounds" ?) are needed to filter the ground connection while still allowing it to work normally if an electrical fault occurs...
