nazka··on Resumes and cover letters: An extension school resource (2021) [pdf]
Ya it’s quite a read! Glad it can help your employer! :)

The dark side is you can see where his money came from so he could continue to do research in stuff he loved. It’s like if you are a dev and you get to code stuff for the army (missiles, planes, software to manage C&C…). Like you pitch how good you can improve the thermal detection of a missile thanks to the cutting edge models in machine learning.

Or like Google and the contract they tried to have. Things are different now. But still at the same time not so much!

If you want the best template for a cover letter you should take example of that guy named Leonardo da Vinci. [1] Quite a smart guy!

The idea is it’s not a summary of what you did and what you can do. But it’s all about what value you can offer to them and how you can solve ~their~ most critical problems. It’s like you pitching yourself as a business.

Now go say no to a guy like that and that can demonstrate these skills for free if necessary.

nazka··on 60 knights paused a war to fight a battle royale
That’s interesting. Do you know where I can find more stuff about this? And the etiquette of war back then?
nazka··on Volvo is using Rust for its in-vehicle software
You may end up liking it too much. :D

Just a few warnings. Everybody when they start are “fighting with the borrow checker”. And some people are frustrated by it. But you have to see that it is a good thing. Because Rust is warning you about a whole type of bug that your old way of doing things were actually creating this kind of bug. And now rust can catch them! It’s like a guy the frustration of someone coming from a dynamic language to a typed language and being frustrated because he has a type number but now he wants it to be a string. Sure you can do that in a dynamic language but it can created all kind of bug.

And another point. Remember what the language is made for and also not made for. Yes you are going to be faster in X language for different things. But for what Rust is good at, the power it gives you, the dev experience, and the performance are amazing.

I usually would grab Typescript first for the back and then reach to Rust where speed and security safety is critical. And it’s so good to code in it.

Have fun!

I can’t wait for the world to wake up from this insanity.

I think it will be comical if he deleted it. But this being there shows that maybe it wasn’t just as an ad?
nazka··on We don't know how the universe began, and we will never know
While wondering around the market, I come and hear and will notice that ironically the fact that this universe have “narcissism” in itself in it just proves, also maybe not that happily, that we exist regardless of being able to colonise systems or not. Because we are and we think. We exists.
nazka··on We don't know how the universe began, and we will never know
The universe is only made of matter so it is true in the sense that it exists but it is not the definition nor the root of creation of Existence itself. That’s where the “I AM” from the Bible echo even more what you say and add so much meaning to it. God Is.

Yep. I checked his bio only after commenting.
nazka··on John Carmack on avoiding distractions
Funny note, John Carmack did (does?) a little bit like you. He wrote everyday little notes about the day. You can find them on the Internet back to the very old days up to kind of recently.
nazka··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
I am curious which web framework do you use? Also do you use an ORM like diesel?
nazka··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
I think at this point Rust has more than marketing points. Then if you have some bright people, and I mean doing what they are trying to do and feeling that RockDB is a slow database... They should be able to pick it up. I don't think it's an unreasonable decision as a CTO/CEO.
nazka··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
Yes I agree. Also if you know your business won't need a lot of dev, like stuff like Instagram where I think they were still at 60 engineers even after hitting 1B active users, it can also be a good thing to use a niche (but viable) language to attract some bright engineers and they will be thrilled to be able to have a job to use it. Now I don't have such startup (yet) so I can't do it :)

I just wish ReScript would have gained traction and replaced Typescript. But who knows maybe it can still happen.

nazka··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
Talking about Haskell and stuff. You what I want? Rescript to replace entirely Typescript. That will be so much better.
nazka··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
I like this "and an overzealous compiler increased engineers’ confidence in pushing changes".

If you think about it, you can try to optimize a Rust program through trying brute force stuff and trying weird things that you are not even sure will break something or not. But you can try ~without 100% knowledge or confidence~ and boom the compiler will tell you if you are shooting yourself in the foot. Now try to that in C++. Even with 95% knowledge and confidence I will be very worried as a Lead or CTO.

nazka··on I Reached $4k/Mo. But How Many Great Startup Ideas Have Died?
You do a super neat hero page with the features your product will have. You say you are working on it but they can preorder. When they click on preorder with the price you actually say that no payment is required but you will shoot them an email when the product will be ready to be tested.

That way the person saw your product, saw the price, and was ready to buy it.

nazka··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
I will trade ease of use over performance everyday. I can code in Rust but Rails or NestJS can work just fine.
nazka··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
What do you mean by pushing it to the limit? And do you have any insight of what’s it’s like to be on call with Elixir? From what I saw it has many great tools to debug problem. Also the “it never crashes” is quite appealing.
nazka··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
Thank you for all this. Did you have any pain point? Lack of libraries or something so far?
nazka··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
Why not use NestJS?
nazka··on Ask HN: So, what's up with Phoenix (web framework)?
Those using it for big projects, is it possible to have some feedback about what is still missing or libraries are there but still need more development. Like does it have the library for Elaticsearch? Everything for auth? Etc… which important library lack documentation? For instance I saw that the one of Stripe is not that good.

That’s what stop me from using it. Being in a startup we don’t have the ressources to have developers having to code other things on top of raising a startup from the ground…

nazka··on Chrome was delivered without any sprints at all (2021)
And still there are so many leak of personal infos and startup X having been hacked and Y millions of data about personal infos and account infos being leak in the dark web. But like nobody really care. It does a few articles in tech news and some tweets and that’s it. (Now I’m not saying that I don’t think it’s bad but the millions of people around me don’t think it is)

Ya for instance protein supplements. If you didn’t know you have to be very careful about the origin and the process the company use to produce those. But because it’s very hard to test even with an independent testing company, you have all kind of speculation about which company to avoid and the ones that are good because you can never know. So if you see one company doing shading things or not being 100% transparent then even if the production line is fine it’s still casting enough doubt in the “expert” users to avoid to buy them. And again testing was easy then all this won’t be here. We will just test the protein powder and that’s it.
nazka··on Faster Ruby: Thoughts from the outside
Yes but it has its own ecosystem. It can't use gems from Ruby. The main selling point for this is because they use the Erlang VM and that thing is uncrashable. Thought from the start to be fault-tolerant and distributed.

So boosting the speed of Ruby itself is always a good news for everybody using it.
