nativeit··on Handling the great code forge fragmentation
I have found Forgejo’s actions to be functional for my own purposes, although rather incomplete compared with GitHub. That said, porting an action from GitHub to Forgejo was fairly easy the one time I was forced to do so.

I’m prob not the “average” user in this context (meaning that I am not a SWE or professional developer, but rather a code-curious sysadmin and consultant with too many hobbies), and I consistently use GitHub Copilot to write and push code to a self-hosted Forgejo…unless it’s a productive fork for contributing, or simply something I don’t want to take up space on my own server, anyway. I agree it’s likely to be a slow decay. GitHub is problematic, but it doesn’t summon the sort of white-hot resentment that pushed people to abandon other platforms en masse.

I am concerned that it will be much more difficult to discover FOSS projects with whatever the new regimes are, similar to how Discord has walled off a great deal of the discussion forums and collaborative groups.

This sounds like a naive presumption. Are ransomware distributors well known for operating within strict hierarchies bound by culturally-ingrained traditions, or acting in the best interests of their own “greater good”?

Last I heard, teenagers can deploy ransomware with minimal technical knowledge or skill.

nativeit··on Why AI agents aren't quite living up to the hype in manufacturing
Over the weekend, I tried to get Claude to produce a relatively straightforward schematic for me using KiCAD’s Python API, and it seems wholly incapable of properly understanding the requests, working with symbol libraries, or handling any of the design apart from creating a bunch of labels and nets. It’s the first time I have seen it fail this badly at a task, and of course it cheerily says it’s doing all the things I asked it. Only when I open the KiCAD files it’s all nonsense.

I think the better tack is to stop acting like these laws are being pushed by honest actors with good faith intentions of protecting children.

Don’t applications running under your user account have access to your user’s home folder by default?
nativeit··on You can't trust macOS Privacy and Security settings
My impression is that the revoked permissions do not persist. Rather, an interactive window running under the user’s name has implied access to the user’s home folders, regardless of what’s been set under “Files & Folders” (which still applies for background/non-interactive processes).

I could absolutely be missing something here, but the title would be accurate in saying, “MacOS ACLs aren’t terribly intuitive”. But I think the behavior they’re documenting is intended behavior.

I have been following this series since it began, and it's just magical for the sort of nerds who have consumed all of the surface-level documentaries and books about Apollo, especially if you have an interest in electronics engineering, computer science, or radio communications. It's a genre that's distinct to YouTube--something I fear going away every time YouTube tries to chase TikTok and Instagram trends.

Marc, Ken, and their team are national treasures. I'm absolutely blown away at the depth and breadth of what they have accomplished in this series.

I never understood the tribalism. For nearly a decade now I have used Windows, Linux, and Macs essentially daily. I have an Ubuntu desktop in my shop, a variety of Debian servers in the cloud, a Windows desktop in my office, a Mac Mini in my bedroom, a MacBook in my bag, and a handful of iPhones/iPads everywhere else. They’re useful for different applications and workflows, and it’s not that difficult to adapt to where they all feel natural. I recognize I’m the weird one though, and I rather enjoy learning new interfaces (I switch my default web browser every few years for “fun” and as a maintenance strategy (kind of like an especially opinionated factory reset).

I think you have to temper the glazing a bit though.

These people and their endeavors are thoroughly, irredeemably corrupt. It’s nice you got a taste, but their impact on society has been calamitous, and will take decades to recover (if at all).

Don’t worry, we’re getting there. They just started dismantling what they refer to as the “administrative state”, but which largely deferred substantial questions requiring skill and non-partisan judgement to their respective experts. It was never perfect, nor free from partisan and/or economic concerns, but the replacement appears to be self-interested narcissists and sycophants and their personal fiefdoms, with precious little space for competence, logic, or integrity.
