Disagree.

That makes it worse, not better.

WebUSB next? I would like to be able to configure my keyboard but it can only be done via their website which requires WebUSB.

Being closed source doesn't pass the smell test?
nathanmills··on Researchers who use hallucinated references to face ArXiv ban
I suppose the root cause would be using/allowing AI for papers, since they hallucinate more than just references.

Forever, honestly. I don't see things actually becoming as closed as you predict. I will avoid banks that require me to do any of that (I already don't use any that report to credit agencies, avoiding ones that don't work on the web browser is much easier). There is about 1 site I use that uses the google captcha and that is archive.today, I will swiftly stop using it if I can't use it with open software, and I doubt they would keep it around in that case anyway.

No, it will continue to work just fine. The restrictions are being added to Google Play Services, not Android itself. I and many others do not run closed source software like Google Play Services on our devices.

You don't need to be a system backup expert to take backups, and with that attitude you will never become a system backup novice either. There is no gaurentee paid services will keep your data available either. One company lost my data and I was very glad to have backups.

Would you really be okay with HN charging monthly to use the site? HN probably stores more data anyways, passwords are pretty small in comparison to comments, and I produce more of them aswell.

I've already stated it. Is there something specific you are asking for?

> Yes, that is exactly what is happening.

They claim it "damages people's ability to study and pray."

Have you considered that different people have different beliefs, or do you just think everyone who disagrees with you is just one person who thinks the same thing?

> That’s a step (sentencing guidelines) after we decide it should be criminalized.

You decide it should be criminalized before you identify any harms?

> They’re in the same ballpark, 2 to 6 years or so.

You can just look it up. Maximum sentence for mugging is 30 years, ransomware is 20.

nathanmills··on Seriously, Give Kagi a Try
Would love to if there was some way to make searches without linking it to an account. Not sure the best way to do this, maybe via an open source browser extention with a wallet that automatically makes micro payments whenever a search is made? The problem being that the anonymous cryptos are too slow and have too high of fees for micro payments (Monero), and the instant and feeless ones are not anonymous (Nano) sigh. They probably claim to not link searches to acocunts but I don't really trust any privacy statements these days and prefer to ensure it myself.
nathanmills··on Instructure pays ransom to Canvas hackers
And where does ransomware fall on that trauma scale? The maximum sentence is less than mugging after all..
nathanmills··on Instructure pays ransom to Canvas hackers
Calm down, extremist. There's a difference between someone doing something vs someone paying someone else to stop doing something. If the latter were truly bad then the same should be applied to people handing over their wallet to muggers. The only difference in that scenario and the above is saving yourself vs saving a family member. Would you really deny people the ability to save their loved ones?

nathanmills··on A HN post with negative points – how?
But that means more people will get enough karma to be able to downvote, and they likely won't share the same ideals as you so they will downvote more often, making it even harder than it already is for new users.
