nathanasmith··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
> When you're actually from the US as a Millennial or Gen Z'er, it's not hard to see what happened. The previous two generations taught us nothing

> Gen X had such an easy go of it

I was still in college when the dot com bust happened, followed a few years later by the Great Recession. Please tell me more how Gen X had it so much easier than Millenials. Also in a previous comment you claim to be 44. Since I turned 45 this year we’re basically the same age. We both, by most definitions, are Gen X. That being the case maybe you’re making a subtle point that your life was really easy as a result of that fact (not that the generation this and that crap means much anyway though you seem to put some stock in it hence my comment).

nathanasmith··on I love my GPD Micro PC
Have you looked at the Lenovo Duet Chrome OS tablet? I have one and it's great. Runs Linux and Android programs quite well, very portable (516 grams/1.14 pounds) an 11 inch screen, and battery life is great since it has an ARM processor. Comes with an attachable keyboard and kickstand in the box too.

nathanasmith··on Ask HN: Which Linux terminal emulator do you prefer and why?
If I need a standalone window I reach for lxterminal. It's lightweight, modern enough looking, and does exactly what I need without any annoyance. Most of the time though I just use guake which as most everybody here knows is a terminal that works like old school first person shooter consoles where you press a button and it appears down from the top of your screen, press the hotkey again and it tucks back up and away. If I'm using a Mac a good alternative to guake is iTerm which has similar functionality.
nathanasmith··on MyNoise – Background Noise Generators
One thing I really like about the background noise feature on iOS is it actively mixes with whatever music you might happen to be listening to on the device so that when the music punches in, the background noise generator backs off and when there's a gap in music playback the background noise subtly goes back up. That's a feature I would sorely miss in noisy environments now that I'm used to it.
nathanasmith··on Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED
I ordered a 1080p screen and controller from Aliexpress for my trusty old Lenovo T420. Installed in about 30 minutes and worked perfectly. The difference in image quality versus the original crap panel is huge.
nathanasmith··on The Feynman Technique
This falls in line with how I've always thought it might be better to learn a foreign language from an instructor who mastered it as a second language rather than a native speaker. Assuming two instructors of otherwise equal theoretical ability and experience, the former might have a more empathetic understanding of the learning process a second language student would go through whereas the latter might unintentionally, innocently gloss over things that, to them, seem intuitive but the student may encounter as huge stumbling blocks. The ordering of direct and and indirect object English versus Spanish pronouns spring to mind.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: HN etiquette: Do you upvote/downvote comments you reply to?
I will sometimes upvote and then reply if I think a comment is particularly good. I will never downvote and then comment, it's one or the other depending on the situation. Probably all in my head but doing both, to me, feels like "piling on" (even if I'm the only one doing it).
nathanasmith··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
As another big fan of MRU tab switching, there is an extension for Chromium based browsers that enables this feature: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/quick-tabs/jnjfein...
nathanasmith··on System76 Lemur Pro Linux laptop with 14 hours of battery life
>When I bring home my System76 and leave it in my bag over the weekend, it will always be dead by Monday morning.

You may be interested in this systemd script I found on the Debian wiki[0] that enables hibernation and power off after a preset amount of time in suspend. I've been using it with my Thinkpads and it works great. Any time I close the lid it goes into suspend then if I don't use the computer for an hour (this is configurable in the script) it happily goes into hibernate.

nathanasmith··on What's the deal with all those weird wrong-number texts?
I usually reply to these fake texts with something along the lines of "send newdz". Have yet to get a response back for some reason.
nathanasmith··on Monkeypox outbreak in U.S. is bigger than the CDC reports. Testing is 'abysmal'
Well played. This (and the preceding comments) is some high class bait. Congrats on hooking a few fish with it. FWIW though Hacker News isn't typically the best place for this kind of thing. >my karma now burns
nathanasmith··on I only care about the helpful notifications, not the promotional ones
It’s a shame there isn’t some kind of system wide filter for notifications using regular expressions or something. Probably a job for an Android ROM creator.
nathanasmith··on StopTheMadness – Take back your web browser
I’ve had the Kill Sticky bookmarklet handy as the first item in the bookmarks bar of every browser I’ve used for years and it is phenomenal in how simple and useful it is. Works everywhere from my iPad to my desktop and everywhere in between. Really a sanity saver and I can’t recommend it highly enough.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What's the best biohack you've found?
I bought this one right here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NPZZ1JW There are cheaper ones that may work just as well but I wanted one a little larger than those others so I didn’t have to sit quite so close. The reviews on this one were really good too. If you look around on lesswrong.com there are anecdotes of people taking the idea to extremes, rigging up a 100,000 lux system and sitting under it all day to work. I don’t know what difference that would make but speaking for myself, the light at that Amazon link gets the job done.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What's the best biohack you've found?
I sit in front of a 10,000 lux light box for about 30 minutes at the start of each morning which has profoundly improved my mood and overall happiness. There’s a ton of evidence for the use of light therapy to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (a form of depression that hits in the winter months) and emerging evidence pointing to its efficacy year round for mood enhancement and circadian rhythm regulation. And as long as your light has a built in UV filter (most do), it’s side effect free.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
If you habitually try to open the wrong door at a restaurant entrance or wherever where there's a double door and one side is locked, quickly glance for the side that has the keyhole in it. That's the one that's open.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
I was going to post this. The act of breaking down an overwhelming abstract goal into simple actionable steps and getting everything out of your head into a trusted system has helped me achieve a mental peace unlike anything else I've tried.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
I'll echo the others' sentiments. Only bother with the Dune books authored by Frank Herbert starting with the first published Dune itself. The "Dune" books written by his son are bad fan-fiction.
nathanasmith··on The first RISC-V portable computer is now available
It appears that device isn't using the RISC-V module under discussion but an ARM version instead.

>I decided to install in my DevTerm the simplest module compatible with the popular RaspberryPi Linux distribution. It’s slower than the other “cores” but less power-hungry, and it’s very simple to install pre-compiled software and look up answers for any questions (as the RaspberryPi community is so huge). Yet this core still gives the user an ARM64-bit Quad-Core Cortex-A53 1.2 GHz CPU and 1 GB of RAM — more than enough to run simple writing apps.

nathanasmith··on New WebKit features in Safari 15.4
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but last time I checked I couldn't find any content blocker for MacOS Safari that would block pre-roll Youtube ads whereas uBlock Origin in Chrome, Firefox, etc. does not have this problem.
nathanasmith··on Lenovo announces the first Arm-based ThinkPad
>Who needs 28 hours of battery?

A nice advantage is in a few years when the battery wears down some you'll still have fantastic all day battery life compared to most other laptops.

nathanasmith··on Apple Patent Envisions a Mac Inside a Keyboard

nathanasmith··on Tell HN: Thank you for the noprocrast flag
I've been using the Hacker News API[0] and Python's Flask web server to create my own curated version of the website. Not only does it place new articles, since the last time I refreshed, at the top of the list and marks them with an asterisk but it also features a carefully considered blocklist of terms and combinations of terms that I tend to fall into a rabbit hole on. Also some subjects, particularly highly charged political content that while important and deserving of careful consideration I would simply prefer to discuss elsewhere, do not show up in my feed.

nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What's your learning strategy?
>Some personal "get better" things, like... "I tell stories badly. I should avoid them." where I rate it a "2" for a "yeah, I did ok this week" or "1" if I transgressed

I thought I was the only one that did this.

nathanasmith··on Using a ThinkPad X61s in 2020
Maybe check to see if the trackpad is turned off in the BIOS. Aside from that, open the machine up and fiddle with the connector to see if it helps.
nathanasmith··on Using a ThinkPad X61s in 2020
>Doesn't the T420 lack USB 3 though?

It does but fwiw the T420s has one. I'm pretty sure you can get Express Card USB 3 ports too.

>even with the "good" 900p screen it wasn't very good with awful viewing angles

Very true. Fortunately it's a simple procedure to replace the panel with a cheap 1080p one from Aliexpress. Make sure you get the controller too.

nathanasmith··on What is the sense of these websites with random content?
I know a guy that used to make sites like this. The gibberish you see is scraped from somewhere and its purpose on the site is to give Google bot something to see and rank the site for search terms related to the content. There's a PHP script running behind the scenes and when users from a certain geographic location or meeting some other criteria happen on the site by clicking on it from an organic link in Google search, the content is switched out for a page full of affiliate ads linking to eBay, Amazon, or whomever.

The "thin" sites with this stuff are generated by a script and the spammer will create thousands of them on cheap hosting. The economics work since it usually takes Google a few months to boot the sites from organic search but by then the affiliate money has been made that more than covers the cost. And the whole time Google is pulling the sites off their search page, more sites are steadily being generated.

nathanasmith··on Does QE Cause Wealth Inequality?
SOXL since April 2020 based on pretty much the same thesis. Imagine how much fun I'm having.
