nathanasmith··on Better ways to read Hacker News
I just use the plain old website with a greasemonkey script to filter out posts from certain users and sources along with other posts and comments containing key words that tend to provoke uninteresting discussion.
nathanasmith··on Mercedes beats Tesla to autonomous driving in California
>Tells you all you need to know.

Thanks for the subtle reminder that your statement is most definitely not "all I need to know."

nathanasmith··on First impressions: Yes, Apple Vision Pro works and yes, it’s good
The first iPhone was fantastic. The instant people saw it they wanted it and when they laid hands on it they needed it. The Apple Vision on the other hand is.. a screen strapped to your face.

I'll add a-Shell to the chorus. Runs ssh, vim, python, and a host of other stuff too on iOS/iPadOS.

There is ChatGLM[0], a 6 billion parameter Chinese/English bilingual model that is gaining a reputation as the leading locally runnable LLM for code generation. Maybe look into that. Demo is here[1].

nathanasmith··on How to use Alpaca-LoRA to fine-tune a model like ChatGPT
Audio, video, and LLMs enabled for real world interaction will pave part of the way for sure.

>There is also the question what happens to the original content these LLMs need to actually make their statistical guess at the next word.

The LLMs get granted the capacity to explore their environment physically and gather data on their own. The recent PaLM-E demo shows a possible direction.

nathanasmith··on Wine 8.0
I use Wine on Ubuntu and Manjaro to run Sierrachart, a Windows only futures trading software. I have no complaints whatsoever.
nathanasmith··on Stock market charts you never saw (2021)
I'm pretty sure Tradingview doesn't take inflation into account.
nathanasmith··on Stock market charts you never saw (2021)
I use TradingView for most of my charting and at the bottom right side there's a button labeled "adj". Clicking it will toggle whether the chart you're viewing is dividend adjusted or not. Very convenient for quick off the cuff comparisons of returns.

Using SPY I can easily see the non adjusted returns from the bottom of the GFC to the top in 2021/2022 were a little over 600% but then accounting for dividends see it's actually a bit over 800%.

nathanasmith··on The persistent and pervasive impact of bullying in childhood and adolescence
If I were to guess the cause of the downvotes it might have been a reflexive action from seeing the numerous times the paradox of tolerance is brought up but then misapplied in a way that suits whatever poster's rhetorical purpose yet deviates significantly from Popper's definition. To be clear, I'm not saying you did that, just offering a possible explanation.

nathanasmith··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
There are these sauna blankets[0] you might want to consider. It's basically a bag you lay in that uses infrared to mimic a sauna. I'm not affiliated in any way and have never used one so can't attest to its efficacy.

nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
It's my luck with this play that I sell the puts with strikes right where I want to buy, the market dips, then bounces before expiration and I don't get assigned. I keep the premium but that's usually a pittance compared to what I could have made had I just bought the dip (that I wanted to buy anyway!). Of course when the price drops to your strikes you could use some extra cash to buy shares but then you're holding shares and the short puts at the same time so there's a trade off, i.e. you can't go all in on both. And you sure don't want to buy those puts back during the dip as they'd be hideously expensive and it'd obviously defeat the purpose of the original trade. This stuff is never easy.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
I like leveraged ETFs but only in market environments with low volatility and high probability of consecutive daily positive returns. Historically those markets environments usually coincide with the major indexes (S&P, Dow, Nasdaq) being above the 200 day moving average, a good benchmark for the market being in an uptrend and volatility being low. Bear markets significantly under the 200 day like right now are generally marked with much less chance of consecutive positive returns and high volatility both of which crush the returns of leveraged ETFs e.g. TQQQ, SOXL, and friends. The upshot is I'm sitting things out for the time being.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What are you doing now to profit from the current or upcoming recession?
You buy a bond from the government for $1000 paying 5% interest and, as long as you keep the bond, you're guaranteed to get that interest money and get your $1000 back when the bond matures. A bond fund has no "maturation date" therefore the only money you get back from it is the current market rate of the bonds in it which could easily go up or down.
nathanasmith··on British pound hits record low against the dollar
My only guess is it's an attempt to tackle inflation by stimulating the supply side. That's the most charitable explanation I can come up with for the reasoning.
nathanasmith··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
Fellow ADHD here. A while back I downloaded a bunch of "Day in the Life" videos off YouTube of people accomplishing the type of productive stuff I need to do everyday then I used iMovie to splice together the best relevant parts starting with getting out of bed, going through the day and ending at night with getting back into bed. Now when I hit a rough patch where I can't accomplish anything I just start the video as soon as I wake up and follow along, going through the motions. This has had the greatest impact on me actually getting things done than anything else I've ever tried.
