natemartin··on Why is volcanic ash a threat to planes?
It's rather scary that engines can "start to thicken with larva"

Beware the volcano-born engine larva.

natemartin··on Oh look, an iPad
Speedbump updates rarely make the main section of the apple.com homepage.
natemartin··on Daring Fireball: "Facebook login"
Of course if your app is aimed at educated people, such as a tool for engineers, you get a nicely self-selected group and can avoid these problems.

But you'll never get to facebook-level with a niche audience like that. It certainly avoids some of the problems with dealing with stupidity though.

natemartin··on Daring Fireball: "Facebook login"
This is fascinating... apparently users are just typing "facebook login" into google, clicking on the first link, and getting very confused as to why they're not actually on facebook.

How can you design a web application that is usable by people with this level of computer knowledge? Should one even try?

natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Yeah, I guess it's a bad time to switch careers.
natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Is anyone hiring for less-experienced roles? Either for new grads, or for someone who is trying to change careers.
natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Where are you based? And if you're not in the SF Bay Area, are you open to telecommuters?

I can't find an address on your site.

natemartin··on Ask HN: Who is hiring (entry level)
Or for that matter someone that wants to change their career.
natemartin··on People who make $250,000 or more a year can afford a tax hike.
Really? That doesn't make any sense to me. "Oh my, I'm making marginally less take-home money. I should completely change my career and get even less money!"

Remember it's a marginal tax system. They would only get taxed more on the amount they are making over 250k.

No matter what the tax rate goes to, you'll still be bringing home more money by having a higher paying job.

natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
I'll let my wife know.
natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's Hiring?
Is anyone hiring for non-technical positions?

I'm posting this on behalf of my wife, but I'm sure there's some other people on this site that would be interested working for a startup, but aren't necessarily programmers or designers.

So, anyone hiring in non-tech positions? Ad inventory management, sales, project management, content administration... any of those jobs needed to actually run a site.

(Submitted this a few days ago, but it fits under this topic better than by itself.)

natemartin··on Ask HN: Anyone hiring for non-technical positions?
Precisely!
natemartin··on Amazon data usage on mobile devices strictly prohibited
Does this mean that any webapp that uses Amazon's API is prohibited, if someone loads it from their iPhone?

So technically then, any use of the Amazon's API is prohibited. Great decision guys!

natemartin··on Ask YC: Review my startup
The boxes with all the pants, shirts, etc scroll very far, but only seem to have 15 or so items. After those items, I can keep scrolling, but there are no additional items.

Safari 4 on Leopard.

natemartin··on The Clacks - discworld semaphore
I just started reading the series myself a few weeks ago, and I'm completely addicted now.

I like the idea of a really long series, because too often I get sucked into the world of a story, and I'm disappointed when the story ends.

natemartin··on Negative Cashback from Microsoft's Bing Cashback
Yeah, I also think this is the merchant's fault. (full disclosure, my wife works for a competitor of Bing Cashback)

My wife's company runs into this issue, and they try to stop the merchants from raising prices, but sometimes a few companies slip through the cracks.

However, maybe Bing doesn't make this against their ToS. In which case, that's bad.

natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's hiring (take 3)?
When you say "UI position" do you mean designer, front-end web developer, or user-experience expert?
natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's hiring (take 3)?
A friendly suggestion: If your job posting is location-specific, please post what city you are located in.
natemartin··on Ask HN: Who's hiring (take 3)?
DC only, or anywhere?
natemartin··on Ask HN: Learning Ruby on Rails
I recently relearned RoR after not using it for a while. I was recommended http://pragprog.com/titles/rails2/agile-web-development-with... and I definitely found it to be a good book.

What helped me the most was to just jump into a project and start coding. I decided to try to do a clone of twitter, just to see if I could get that working. It helped that I had a few friends who were good rails hackers that I could go to with questions.

natemartin··on Simply Scala: Try Scala in the browser
I'm looking forward to it, sounds great!

(there's your motivation :) )

natemartin··on Simply Scala: Try Scala in the browser
I don't think you need to use a safe subset as much as you need to run everything in a sandbox of some sort.
natemartin··on Simply Scala: Try Scala in the browser
The only problem I see is that the author uses abbreviated variable names quite often. For someone like me, just learning the language, this can make some of the examples quite hard to follow, such as:

  ltrs.foldLeft(List[(Char,Int)]()){
    case ((prevchr,cnt)::tl,chr) if(prevchr==chr) =>(prevchr,cnt+1)::tl
    case (tbl,chr) => (chr,1)::tbl
  }
Keeping track of cnt, chr, t1, tbl, etc is hard enough, even when you're not trying to learn the syntax as well.
natemartin··on Simply Scala: Try Scala in the browser
Do you know if there are any for the other functional languages?
natemartin··on Simply Scala: Try Scala in the browser
This is great, I've been meaning to learn one of the more functional languages. The tutorial-in-website format is fantastic.
natemartin··on Regular Friday HN meetup in San Francisco
I wish I could WFH. Us hardware types don't get that luxury.
natemartin··on Regular Friday HN meetup in San Francisco
Agreed. I work in the south bay, so I usually can't make it back to the city until at least 7:30.
natemartin··on Ask HN: Hardware Incubator/Accelerator
I hadn't heard of them. They align pretty closely with some of my goals as well. Thanks for the link!
natemartin··on Ask HN: Hardware Incubator/Accelerator
Interesting. I guess I had always assumed YC was really aimed at more software startups, I'll take a closer look.
natemartin··on Sending confidential documents to Omni, and the gibberish-izer
This is a fantastic example of attention to detail. One of many reasons that all of Omni's products are such high quality.
