"source". Just one, The Bible.

>>With Signal, it is not a single point of failure. The Android, iOS, desktop apps all do end-to-end encryption.

I meant DoS attack not encryption.

AFAIK all of these secure "apps" are NOT decentralized.

So if you can just block a certain IP, you'd have successfuly performed a DoS attack.

nasredin··on Spotify opens on NYSE, valuing company at almost $30B
Off topic.

Bandcamp's site loooks like it was designed by a schizophrenic person.

A lot of music sites in general seem to prefer form over function IMHO.

Discogs.com is a notable exception of course.

nasredin··on We might be swinging away from the newsfeed
I think the - actually usable UI as opposed to the dumbified abortion most of the big sites have - train is long gone.

A usable UI (for non-niche sites) is one of those things you can get nostalgic about with "back in my day...". It's not coming back as long as advertisers pay for things.

You are getting off one boat and getting on the other one. Destination is the same.

Any centralized communication network is by definition insecure (one point of failure).

Maybe try Tox.

Do the Chinese/Asian governments do anything WRT to education now?

This seems like it has being going on for a while and the Asian governments just don't do anything.

---

Also WRT to finance incentives for locals: IIRC rhino horn goes for obscene ammount of dollars in Asia, so any tourism dollars will have to compete with that.

nasredin··on 'PC Building Simulator' Is More Fun Than Building a Real Computer
PCPP is useful to look up if your build or a build similar to yours is gonna have problems or little gotchas.

PCPP is really revolutionary. Building a PC in 2018 should be easy.

The only priblem is a lot of everchanging technologies and acronyms, e.g. NVMe, M.2, etc.

nasredin··on 'PC Building Simulator' Is More Fun Than Building a Real Computer
I've read that GPUs are not designed to be run 24/7 e.g. bitcoin mining.
nasredin··on 'PC Building Simulator' Is More Fun Than Building a Real Computer
You only ground yourself if you paid for the components.

If it's your bud's money... it will probably be fine. Just hold the beer when you are installing the CPU :)

nasredin··on 'PC Building Simulator' Is More Fun Than Building a Real Computer
Going on a tangent.

The best way to apply thermal paste AKA TIM:

the thinnest possible layer ALL over the processor's surface.

The pea method IMNSHO is stupid!

>>>(which is and always was against Facebook's Terms of Service)

Nobody reads TOS.

Car analogy: leaving you car in a bad neighborhood, unlocked, key in the ignition, door open, with a "do not steal or we will send you a threatening letter demanding our car back" note.

nasredin··on Tesla fatal car crash prompts NTSB investigation
The Las Vegas shooter hit the airport's avgas containers and nothing happened.

Also IIRC Mythbusters did an episode on this.

nasredin··on Elephant 'smoking' footage baffles experts
"pet cat"

And the other type being a stray cat?

Confused about the term. Not a cat person myself.

There's your answer then: not very well!!!

FB has always been ignoring users (kinda like Firefox!).

See the original "wall" and the system before "timeline".

nasredin··on Facebook Goes on a Hiring Spree for Washington Lobbyists
The Stormy Daniels legal case is still active AFAIK.
nasredin··on Lax regulation made it cheaper for China to outsource pork production to the US
The NYC people that judge you are obviously not "tolerant".

Also most stereotypes have some truth to them, otherwise they wouldn't be stereotypes.

E.g. IIRC Southern states come last in education ranking.

nasredin··on Lax regulation made it cheaper for China to outsource pork production to the US
They are probably mocking their hypocritical, not "deplorable" religious beliefs.

That word IME is not used by anybody but the people complaining about it.

E.g. Judge Roy Moore in Alabama.

nasredin··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
What do you think about banning high capacity magazines?

It is much easily defined and codified than "assault weapons".

Personally I'm surprised the anti-gun people don't go after magazines, instead fighting the same battle over and over again.

nasredin··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
>>Try to use it go gang up with few dozen of hundreds of citizens and oppose some tax regulation or something government actually cares about. You'll have FBI on your ass before you ramp up, and if that's not sufficient, yes, also military.

IIIRC the Bundys did EXACTLY that and US government is having a tough time convicting them.

>>I wonder why so many western countries don't descend into tyranny even though their citizens don't own guns.

Maybe because America acts as a guarantor of security via NATO and thousands of other ways?

nasredin··on With SESTA/FOSTA, lawmakers failed to separate good intentions from bad law
OT.

WRT Opium Wars I always found the casualty figures astonishing:

UK: 69

China: 18,000-20,0000

>>It may not look like it, but this is equivalent to accidentally pressing a missle button and it hit the country on the other side.

TBH I expected somebody to Godwin this whole thing, but the quality of people commenting on HN is just too damn high.

Guess your comment is as close as we gonna get.

Never thought the like button of one tweet can have such devastating consequences.

nasredin··on Omaha man ‘liked’ a tweet, then lost his job
A LOT of manual labor jobs are shittier (you can use bad words here BTW) than working in an air-conditioned office chatting on Twitter all day.

>>That's why I'm guessing that Marriott actually views China's reactions as reasonable.

I managed to ignore your posts in this thread, but unfortunately read the above.

Authoritarians always have at least some support from the people and "useful idiots" and the corrupt from abroad.

nasredin··on Omaha man ‘liked’ a tweet, then lost his job
Fun trivia:

Charlie Brooker talks himself of predicting a Trump-like person becoming president and that Black Mirror "Waldo" episode.

Don't recall the source.

nasredin··on Omaha man ‘liked’ a tweet, then lost his job
It's called "whataboutism".

A more appropriate example would be the Crimean annexation, which only a handful of countries recognize.

Also IIRC a lot of these companies are state-owned or owned by Kremlin-friendly oligarchs. Not really a private corporation.

nasredin··on #deletefacebook
The attempts to demonize the words "social justice" are quite Orwellian.

"Justice" is literally the last word in America that I thought would be used in some RWA-type context.

nasredin··on Hackers Are So Fed Up with Twitter Bots They’re Hunting Them Down Themselves
OP was talking about the nerdness (think "PGP keys") rather than the name itself.

BTW Mastadon sounds like it's related to BDSM or ED meds IMHO.

"Sweetcheeks, have you heard of Mastadon?"

"I'm not into that dear!"

or

"When the moment is right... Ask your doctor about... Mastadon"
