nasredin··on Thousands of Turks accused of using Bylock app despite never having used it
I get amusement from these people, the people who voted against their interest WRT Trump and now reap the consequences.

What is a proper term for this?

I don't want to use "schadenfreude", the "enjoyment obtained from the troubles of others".

That is way too broad. I only "enjoy" the suffering of Trump supporters. (And only if it's not serious. And "enjoy" is probably not the right word.)

nasredin··on Thousands of Turks accused of using Bylock app despite never having used it
>Have sociologists studied this phenomenon?

There's research into authoritarianism (think Germans in WWII) and RWA personality type (Right Wing Authoritarian). Most of it is not very "accessible" to the average person.

From what I understand, RWA are just born this way, i.e. some people are naturally critical thinkers, others will say "how high" if a man in an uniform says "jump". Sad.

This is one of the few decent "explainers" that Vox did:

I don't follow your analogy.

IMHO, a better one:

Your friend (used loosely in this case) is doing criminal acts. Would you tell him to stop doing criminal acts while you treat him?

Sometimes journalist take this "ALLWAYS two sides to every story" and "each side is equal" crap too far.

See the success of Wolf's book on Trump.

nasredin··on Ecuador Gives Assange Citizenship, Worsening Standoff with Britain
TBH if I was Assange, I wouldn't leave the embassy now that Trump is president.

Yes, Obama aggressively prosecuted whistle blowers, but Trump is certainly worse.

So, at least three more years in the embassy?

It's ironic that he's gonna spent more time being de facto imprisoned than Chelsea (Bradley) Manning (7 years), his source.

Congratulations, you have beat the "80% of men competing for the 20% of women"* statistic.

*My numbers may be off.

Fake button JPEGs and bug crawling on your screen GIFs?

Yeah it's been done before.

It's funny, every few years people discover something... that has been done before.

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
Disagree.

I think you are descibing empathy and selfishness, not anxiety.

Anxiety and empathy are probably somehow connected, but they are different things.

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
I love reading about experiments performed in the 50s and 60s before all those pesky Ethical Review Boards(?)

>In an early version of the study, Brady placed monkeys in 'restraining chairs' and conditioned them to press a lever.[2] They were given electric shocks every 20 seconds unless they pressed the lever during the same time period. This study came to an abrupt halt when many of the monkeys died from perforated ulcers.

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
I HATE people who put IANAL and other acronym disclaimers everywhere, but I just feel these type of posts can negatively influence people.

I am glad magnesium and vitamin D worked for you, but some people may need prescription medications from a psychiatrist.

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
IIRC there is an issue here. Former doctors who now work for pharma companies and take their peers to dinners and push the new (patented) drugs.

Doctors then prescribe these new drugs perhaps needlessly (Vioxx?) or over generic ones.

Also in my experience counseling is only affordable to the wealthy or people in the criminal justice system (where it is already too late IMHO).

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
Speaking of supplements.

CoQ10 gives you some extra energy. If you are in the US, buy the brand that's USP (IIRC) certified.

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
Not gonna happen.

Cannabis is on Schedule 1. Which, IIRC means zero beneficial medical use (think heroin, cocaine).

See the recent article with pictures of the "marijuana" that the government gives to researchers.

And with Sessions as the AG, I don't think the situation is changing soon.

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
I would say wealth not only reduces but eliminates a lot of the problems for an average person.

Every week there's a study that being poor causes a lot of damage to your body (on the DNA level IIRC).

nasredin··on Calling for a new approach to depression
Not an expert.

Low energy often comes with depression. So it's not easy as telling a depressed person to "do more exercises".

Depression is "invisible". I like to think that being depressed is like having a broken leg. You can't just get better by yourself, you need proper medical treatment.

nasredin··on Christopher Nolan: The power of people and why 2001 should be preschool viewing
RT has some questionable ratings.

On some new movies the rating is very high, but it goes down sharply.

IIRC one of the Fast and the Furious "movies" had a stupidly high rating, which is now more sane.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/franchise/the_fast_and_the_fu...

IMDB seems to suffer from this less.

The only useful thing on RT is their one line blurb.

I hope there's no bugs in it then!

Fury Road felt like you unknowingly did a large amount of very potent crack cocaine.

I needed several minutes to cool down after that movie ended.

I could never skip the ending credits of The Wire. And for some seasons the opening ones too.

If opening credits are done right, they can serve a function, e.g. The Wire.

An example from the cinema world would be Michael Mann's films.

>I even explained the theory behind the movie, Dave ending up in an environment he couldn't understand, like an animal in a zoo.

"A theory", not "the theory". There's quite a lot of theories about this movie.

No, no, no!

The sound design in 2001 is perfect. 2001 is usually cited as the top or one of the top movies WRT realism in space ever. If it ain't broke, don't fix it?!

nasredin··on “My ten hour white noise video now has five copyright claims”
Uh uh. Nope. Not gonna fool me this time!

IIRC I have only been Rick Rolled 2 or 3 times. You had to have Navy SEAL level of discipline during that year or two.

nasredin··on “My ten hour white noise video now has five copyright claims”
Mr. Stallman, is that you?

One more reason Google sucks:

Google recently deleted hundreds of videos of the war in Syria. Potential evidence of war crimes erased. Original uploaders may be dead.

I don't think some tech people realize the consequences of their decisions.

nasredin··on Where Pot Entrepreneurs Go When the Banks Say No
All this marijuana to crypto currency stuff is great in theory.

But at some point, you, the skinny geek with your bags of cash and bitcoins is gonna run into people who have already solved this problem and have been doing it for the past 40+ years. The drug cartels. Probably gonna be some conflict there.

nasredin··on Where Pot Entrepreneurs Go When the Banks Say No
Yes.

Americans are the most divided right now. Polling these questions began in the 1990s.

IIRC General Mad Dog Mattis (not sure) when asked what's the biggest threat said it's the internal divisions and not terrorists, Russia, etc.
