Direct competition for https://www.bynorth.com/focals. Not sure how North (fka Thalmic Labs) competes?
narak··on Ask HN: Best office chair for home office work?
I regularly find refurbished liquidated Steelcase Leap v2 chairs in the Bay Area for between $250-350. Find a set of gel wheels on Amazon for $25 to replace the plastic casters and you've got a great chair. There's actually a used chair store right next to YC HQ in Mountain View.

That said, these days I slightly prefer the much cheaper Ikea Markus with the arm rests removed and angled at approx 135 deg.

narak··on Distru supply chain software for the cannabis industry raises $3M
Slightly off-topic: how do American startups in the cannabis space, even in States where it's legal, not violate federal laws? Would software specifically designed to distribute cannabis be seen in the the same way as software designed specifically for encrypting cartel communication[1]?

Don't be sorry, same thing happened to me just now and I'm trying to figure out how they are installing locally from a URL click with no further input from me.

narak··on Show HN: Trilium Notes – Scriptable note-taking application
This looks awesome! Clearly you have put in a lot of hard work and thought into this.

Ive been itching for a scriptable personal knowledge base where I can store arbitrary datastructures and executable code in addition to the typical richtext note taking. Will be diving into the code asap. Cheers!

narak··on Build your own Mint
Plaid is US only at the moment. The closest equivalent I've found in the EU are Token (https://token.io) and Teller (https://teller.io)

p.s. notably, the author of Build your own Mint project is also the creator of Vuejs

What about these guys?

So you think digging tens of millions of miles of fiber trenches to bring gigabit internet to everyone is a more capex efficient solution than a few hundred nano-satellites in LEO blanketing the earth with connectivity? It will be low bandwidth but enough for farmers (what most people in the world do) to check weather, crop yield predictions, and market spot prices, or do remote banking from their village, or check medical information.

I'm not a rich white guy, so if I work on this, what kind of problem is it then?

  > what can we do to eliminate the need for insurance?
You can't eliminate the need for insurance. As long as there is risk in the world, there will be the need to insure against it.

  > Air conditioning: A problem easily solved by getting people to live in better climates.
Yup, let's move billions of impoverished people living in tropical countries to cooler climates up north. Maybe we can fit them all in Denmark.

  > Some of this list seems silly and easily dismissed as "because physics". Electric aircraft don't make sense and I doubt they ever will.
Elon Musk seems to disagree. And so do all these folks: https://techcrunch.com/2018/07/08/the-electric-aircraft-is-t...

It's so easy to be an armchair critic and be dismissive of other people's ideas. The only difference is, some people break down large problems step by step and overcome obstacles for over a decade to solve them.

narak··on Startups I Want to Fund
Did you just read the first few items and comment? How is building a global satellite network enabling internet access to everyone on earth boring or a "rich-white-guy problem"? Or A/C for the developing world?

narak··on Ask HN: Men's fashion/style/grooming advice for software engineers?
A great starting point for me was reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice (and the associated wiki)

Some advice: focus, above all, on fit. Learn what each of the basic garments should fit like for your body type. Even the most basic budget wardrobe tailored to fit well will look great compared to expensive but unfitting clothes. Then focus on fabric quality, color combinations, and experimenting with your own styles (pinterest is great for exploring this).

Good luck!

narak··on Ask HN: How does consensus work in an enterprise blockchain?
Worth watching this talk on Ripple's consensus algorithm by its architect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7abKUs9tYZg and related whitepaper: https://ripple.com/files/ripple_consensus_whitepaper.pdf

I have no affiliation with Ripple or XRP, just enjoyed the fairly technical nature of the talk.

I'm curious why UBI has become popular over Milton Friedman's negative income tax. It seems to avoid a lot of the lack of incentive and cost issues.

narak··on As Equifax Amassed Ever More Data, Safety Was a Sales Pitch
This seems like a legitimate use-case for permissioned ledgers where various lenders have necessarily siloed lending history data but also have an interest in seeing what data everyone else has for prospective lendees.

In the longer run, you can imagine not just credit history data being exchanged (with the permission of the borrower perhaps) but also the ability to trade the loan products themselves, most of which is done OTC right now. Fixed income contracts can be described as "smart contracts" [1]
