Blank lines separate paragraphs.

Text surrounded by asterisks is italicized, if the character after the first asterisk isn't whitespace.

Text after a blank line that is indented by two or more spaces is reproduced verbatim. (This is intended for code.)

Urls become links, except in the text field of a submission.

nannal··on Ask HN: I built it, nobody came, now what?
The premise as I read it from the website was "You have a problem with tool X, replace it with tool Y." Why would I do this, I know tool X, everyone uses X if we need to move from tool X there's DBs and web apps, tool Y is a total unknown with no clear benefit.

Other issues: There was no Linux option for download so I can't try it & it's an electron app meaning there very well could be.

nannal··on You can now turn on Nvidia's excellent noise cancellation with any GeForce GPU
Is there any planned support for Linux, I'm aware of Cadmus (and can't get it to produce any noise) & Noise-torch (only turns off the mic when there's non-speech) but neither of these haven't worked to effectively filter out background noises.
nannal··on Facebook freezes Venezuela president Maduro's page over Covid-19
This argument might be more appealing if we hadn't just come through a pandemic that an unnamed group of people were more than happy to describe as a hoax.

There's the myth of election theft if you needed a second example.

There really is a lot of 'misinformation' (outright lying) on social media.

Isn't WaPo owned by Amazon's ex-ceo Jeff Bezos, I'd be concerned about a conflict of interest with regard to its reporting on the matter.

Can you imagine being that hopeful about the future, I know a lot of people are opting not to have children due to the environmental nightmare those children would have to survive.

It would be easier, this TX came from my work's hotwallet & this one was part of my inheritance, you can see these TXs where that address sent to the tax authority assuring all tax has been paid as opposed to being passed around a call centre to talk to "Bob" so the bank can provide those details.

> Just regulate/limit mining, or even better put a capacity on electricity usage or have tiers where the more you use, the more expensive it is, making mining not worth it after a certain point.

Isn't that the exact method used, electricity is metered, the more you use, the more expensive it is.

Yes it drives up the price for everyone else because there's demand, but by that argument we would need to look at other energy intensive activities, like heating and driving, which feels like a step backwards.

nannal··on Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index
A transaction takes ~10 minutes, to ensure that the block which the transaction is included in isn't orphaned some services institute a 6 block waiting period to ensure the transaction is stable. Should the block be orphaned, the transaction will re-enter the mempool on all hosts who'd confirmed the block and should be included in a subsequent block.

The transaction cost depends on the size of the transaction and the congestion in the mempool, the cost can be set by any sender depending on the urgency of the transaction.

I played around with something similar on my domain, using DoH to fetch txt values for page modification .

     dig TXT nannal.com|grep status

Plan was to grab that, pipe it into a JS switch statement and then change some CSS values based on the value.

nannal··on The Raspberry Pi 4 has a fan now – the Case Fan
I've two machines tucked away near my desk & a sudden rise in the ambient hard drive rumbling has occasionally been an indicator that I should look into what's happening, usually it's just one of the larger torrents but it has also drawn my attention to a few bots going over my git server.

It draws attention to an alternate sense (hearing) when it comes to systems monitoring & information delivery, Phones are the common culprit of obnoxious beeping, whistles and tones but this sound isn't an intentional interpreted interrupting noise, it's a direct line from the machine.

nannal··on Proptee: £0 commission property stock exchange
Yes but I imagine the argument would be that it leads to a reduction in supply & increased demand meaning fewer houses available to compete over which results in a higher over all price which can be applied to all houses, inflating the price beyond a houses intrinsic value.

There is a significant difference, the repercussions for expressing thoughts and opinions in China are much more significant.

I wouldn't argue that we should ignore or accept constant surveillance in our daily lives, but I would argue that I'd rather not have my travel rights revoked for expressing opinions against the state.

nannal··on Hackers take over prominent Twitter accounts in simultaneous attack

nannal··on Bitcoin is more like ham radio than the early internet
Just as a warning to people that might want to try this, a lot of work has gone into monitoring the addresses tied to private keys created from potential words.

For example, if you use a word in the (infamous) rockyou wordlist as your private key & send money to the corresponding public key, it will not be your money for long.

If it were me, I think I'd be sneaking out an SD card in a condom in my prison wallet.
