namose··on Ask HN: What makes you optimistic about the future?
I think COL and housing costs show why rental markets are not good in the long run. The world will increasingly belong to a handful of speculators who can rule the poor into indentured servitude by owning necessities of life.

I gotta say, Bill Gates single-handedly owning the health infrastructure of the third world doesn’t put me at ease. This is a man who was ruthlessly capitalistic throughout his career, and hung out with a convicted rapist (Epstein) on a regular basis. At the very least, he’s an “ends justify the means”, willing to look the other way kind of guy. There’s no doubt the Gates foundation has done a lot for global health, but it’s too much political power for one flawed person to have.
namose··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
Philly is also probably the closest approximation to NYC in this way. Most other cities in the US are so segregated that wealthier neighborhoods feel like suburbs (looking at DC and Boston here).
namose··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
Wild that people who draw up licenses for their code which up until this point have been reliably enforced expect them to continue to be enforced!
namose··on Copilot sells code other people wrote
If that’s their motive they should stop charging for it. Or, if they need to cover source costs, open source copilot code and allow people to host their own

But GPL owners aren’t seeking rent, so you’re just asking those who believe all code should be open source to unilaterally let large companies use all their code, while they reap no such benefits from the large companies
namose··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
Not a parent, but I’d personally be more proud as a parent of a Taco Bell cook than, e.g. adtech or a high frequency trading firm (of course, sometimes these places are great for training or getting a name on a resume, but if that was my child’s career ambition I’d be sad). The only issue I would have would be whether they’re making enough to support their other goals.
namose··on Is Google Dying? Or Did the Web Grow Up?
I’ve seen this advice so much over the past month or 2 that I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s being promoted by companies who have figured out how to effectively push their stuff on reddit. Or some contractor who runs Reddit campaigns or something.
namose··on Y Combinator's Message to Founders
Commodities usually don’t make 0% return. The price of corn, gold, and gas have all gone up significantly over time (although sometimes not faster than inflation).
namose··on A 4-year-old can run errands alone and not just on reality TV
The whole point of the article is that the benefits are actually enormous.

I think we also need to consider other, less obvious bullets here, namely suicide, or even just a less happy and fulfilling life. Kids have been getting less happy year over year in America and while there are likely many reasons, I strongly believe the inability to be independent is one. I won’t claim to know the best age to let kids wander a city street (and it likely depends on the neighborhood), but when you let them out on their own, you also potentially prevent suicide, something that’s far more likely to kill a kid than a stranger.

namose··on Complaints mount after GitHub launches new algorithmic feed
If a sufficient number of gh users do look at the page, you’ll be affected by SEO on the repos you follow if they care about growth.
namose··on The High Price of Efficiency (2019)
It feels like we need something akin to chaos engineering for businesses, but I have no idea what that would look like.
namose··on Is old music killing new music?
Sorry, but why is “total album consumption” the metric here? The vast majority of people listening to contemporary music don’t have the attention spans for full albums (I include myself here).
namose··on Quit Your Job
I don’t get the obsession with building an “empire”. Why is that even something people find noble or the actions of a “responsible elite”? Imperialism quite literally has destroyed the lives of millions of people in the service of a privileged few.

If you really wanted to be a responsible elite build public goods, not an empire.

namose··on Why Web3?
It doesn’t. Or it will some day, either way, this is the point. It’s still going to require a centralized authority to enforce fair use, ultimately making it no different than any other method of distributing art.
namose··on Why Web3?
There’s a limit to artists’ ability to do this. It’s called copyright law and it’s enforced by a central authority. Unfortunately no such central authority exists in the NFT space, so it’s perfectly within anyone’s rights and abilities to copy an artwork and sell it as their own.
namose··on If Apple keeps letting its software slip, the next big thing won’t matter
The problem is that engineers don’t get promotions based on bug fixes or refactors, and they get rewarded for building features, even if they introduce lots of new bugs.

Also, if getting a promotion was just as easy as a pay bump for transferring jobs, maybe engineers would stay longer. These are all ultimately management problems.
