namecheapTA··on Shutdown of the court system as a possible factor in the crime wave
Everyone needs shelter, sure. But just because Malibu is nice doesn't mean I can just show up there and expect a place to live while doing the most basic of jobs. You can extrapolate this to any town that doesn't fit the budget. You can get a studio in Merced, CA for $600 a month.

And we're not even talking about shelter. We're talking about owning a piece of the earth and having dozens of other humans build you a shelter, and then letting you sell it one day. Making other humans build you a home probably isn't going to ever be so cheap that everyone could just buy their own. That's why people live with family or friends or work to learn skills beyond minimum wage.

namecheapTA··on Tell HN: Salesforce has globally revoked Slack's holiday shutdown benefit
People consider their options every single time they drive to work. No one is arguing that when perks are taken away you can be sad. But it's not like employers aren't disappointed by employees often too and still keep them for weeks, months, years longer after the disappointment.
namecheapTA··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
They do not.

Mexico doesn't check anything. Years ago I walked into Mexico. 2019 I rode a motorcycle into Mexico, so you could argue they had my plates, but they didn't know who was under the helmet, and definitely didn't know which 5' passenger I had as a passenger also wearing a helmet, even though you could argue she's possibly the size of a child even (she was just a small 23 year old)
namecheapTA··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
You can walk into Mexico basically without a single check of any kind.
namecheapTA··on BlackRock suffers $1.7T loss in 6 months: Worlds largest asset manager
Guy says that blockrock threatens to sell or not buy based on your ESG scores.

Your rebuttal is, blackrock no power to enforce ESG scores. And companies have no reason to comply.

Is a huge financial institution threatening to sell not a 'reason' and a form of power?

namecheapTA··on Myths about construction
There are many smart people in construction. I went to Cal and know some classmates that went into it as management. There's also tons of people that went to "good" schools and studied construction management and I would put them up against CS majors from "average at best" schools any day. To say that the average cs grad got straight As in highschool is laughable. I know tons that couldn't even get into Cal or Stanford.
namecheapTA··on Shutdown of the court system as a possible factor in the crime wave
I worked in car sales for a long time. Basically every above average salesperson, and every mechanic over 26, owned their own home. In California. While it's probably not possible to own your own how doing every and any job, it's not like that was possible throughout history either. But if you do something at all specialized beyond just providing the lowest of manual labor, you can usually get a home.

I also know the construction industry well. You can glue tile to the floor, or screw cabinets to a wall, and own your own home pretty quickly.

If mechanics and slightly skilled manual labors can own homes in California, is there really a problem?

namecheapTA··on Tell HN: Salesforce has globally revoked Slack's holiday shutdown benefit
Idk, I think they're getting as many weeks as their employment contract dictates. That's how it always worked for me.
namecheapTA··on Tell HN: Salesforce has globally revoked Slack's holiday shutdown benefit
I think they already have something like this where you get a few weeks to take off per year whenever you like and you still get paid.
namecheapTA··on Highly differentiated startups raise 117% more funding
It has to be the latter, otherwise they'd say 17% more??
namecheapTA··on What happens when a reservoir goes dry
That water is trucked a very short distance. I'm talking more about water being trucked in from entirely different regions. But yes, at a scale, shipping water isn't all that expensive if it came down to life or death for people.
namecheapTA··on We haven’t killed 90% of all plankton
Certainly? No. Probably? Yes. The average age of a covid death in the UK was higher than the actual life expectancy age.

Add in how overly sensitive the tests were, especially pcr, testing for the virus and not for actual proof of infection... It's all a joke.

namecheapTA··on What happens when a reservoir goes dry
To stay alive? Easily.

Also, the cost to transport gasoline is not $4.50 a gallon. The actual commodity is almost all of that. You can already find water in retail stores transported thousands of miles for $1 a gallon at retail.

namecheapTA··on What happens when a reservoir goes dry
For a lot of people that live in waterless areas, I have a feeling they also drive a lot. I personally use several gallons of gasoline a day. Think of how hard that gasoline is to get to me. It would be trivial to get me a 2 gallons of water a day to live no matter how large the desert I live in is.

As long as food production is taken care of where water is, getting people drinking water is pretty easy.

namecheapTA··on We haven’t killed 90% of all plankton
Over a million people died with covid, not from covid. If after 2 years you haven't got this distinction, do you think possibly you're just severely confused on the topic and shouldn't be discussing it publicly for fear of spreading misinformation?
namecheapTA··on We haven’t killed 90% of all plankton
So do you. Basically made up.
namecheapTA··on Blue Zones, where people reach age 100 at 10 times greater rates
I've always wondered how many poorly documented people have registered themselves as a decade or more older than they are, to start collecting senior benefits sooner.
namecheapTA··on Britain has declared a national emergency because of the heat
I saw people discussing how English homes are insulated to keep them hot in the winter, and this is hurting them in the summer.

Either I am completely retarded or the internet has basically let the lowest common denominator have a voice.

namecheapTA··on We could have universal Covid vaccines soon
If everyone, including you and your children, started taking the aids antivirals daily, we could probably eradicate aids, or atleast save millions of lives. Are you willing to take them daily to make sure you or your children don't spread aids someday?
namecheapTA··on We could have universal Covid vaccines soon
I heard a PSA on the radio that said you should get your 5-13 or whatever age children vaccinated because "many children will suffer major covid complications or even death".

'Many'. No percentage. Just many.

namecheapTA··on We could have universal Covid vaccines soon
Trump didn't suggest it. He mentioned that it was being looked at as one of the possible options.

And I think OP is implying that a totally incorrect statement erodes trust, even if you were just trying to persuade people to take the vaccine.

namecheapTA··on FCC proposes to increase minimum broadband speeds to 100 Mbps
I do I suppose. I just want my files to download, send, and my websites to load. I don't play games or operate some kind of server from my house, so for me it works as well as the wired internet at my work.
namecheapTA··on Do breastfed children have higher IQs? The answer is annoyingly hard to uncover
It just feels weird to run this random experiment on my current child. Is evolution/biology wrong, and this processed stuff from the store better?? You'd have to have shocking amounts of studies to convince me it's better to have a baby eat that fake stuff than a mother's breast milk.

And finally, I think it's incredibly selfish to argue about equitably splitting feeding times, at the likely expense of your child's health and growth.

Young adults and men seem to be less healthy than ever. Plummeting testosterone, crazy rates of allergies, increased suicide rates, high depression.... But your right, if feeding them processed junk was bad, we'd see signs of it by now.

namecheapTA··on Smart thermostats inadvertently strain electric power grids
Maybe that should have been the public message we focused on, the actual dumping of trash into the ocean by foreign countries, and us sending it there when we supposedly recycle, instead of "little girl convinces law makers to go to paper straws!"
namecheapTA··on FCC proposes to increase minimum broadband speeds to 100 Mbps
I got tired of my previous internet provider. I noticed Xfinity wifi was available at my house. I signed up.

They asked me to either rent a router or bring my own and do self install. I have done neither.

I use the Xfinity wifi. For over a year now. No complaints.

Wiring every house in a dense area seems weird when you can just go wireless.

namecheapTA··on Smart thermostats inadvertently strain electric power grids
Commercial properties almost all have white roofs. Homes almost all have dark roofs. I wish someone would do the math on how much heat we're capturing into our houses because we want them to look nice.
namecheapTA··on Smart thermostats inadvertently strain electric power grids
The plastic straw thing confuses me. I'd like someone to explain to me how anything besides the random runaway straw gets into the ocean. I live 60 miles from the ocean. We're people throwing them into storm drains that flow to the delta that flow to the ocean? We're people in San Francisco traveling to the beach and throwing them into the ocean? Couldn't we focus on not littering instead of legislating things like straws?
namecheapTA··on Ask HN: Is it possible to get an 18-year-old to spend less time on the computer?
This is almost not a child question but a question about any friend/person you care about. They're old enough that just setting restrictions is going to make them replace one unhealthy habit with another if the underlying issue is not fixed. Is it really better if you forcibly take away the computer and they replace it with going to pool halls all day?

If I had a friend that was wasting their life away, I'd try to find out what they were interested in doing in this decade or 5 years of their life and then I'd try to help them and motivate them to begin on it. You'd then probably have to actively try to help along the way because they probably don't have the skills yet to push through at every single minor roadblock they might hit. Basically you'll have to repeat this motivation/help hourly, then daily then weekly for a long time.

"People discount motivational speeches because it doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing and that's why we recommend it daily." -zig ziglar

namecheapTA··on Thoughts on the potato diet
Ive had six egg scrambles for breakfast many times. I then can eat a lunch at a reasonable time very easily. Most of this food stuff is in everyone's head. I think everyone should try a 3 day fast once in their life to see what it all feels like and realize nothing bad will happen. If anything it quickly makes you realize why people stress eat. Being actually pretty hungry feels a lot like anxiety to me.
