namarie··on The UAE’s secret hacking team of U.S. mercenaries
Why would it ever be ok? It's dehumanization of non-americans at its worst.
namarie··on Kenya will start teaching Chinese to elementary school students from 2020
> No, it's vastly easier for Chinese to learn English (or French or German) because they're generally phonetically-spelled languages.

Interesting of you to make that claim as english spelling is usually a nightmare to learn (as is French spelling to a minor extent). Sometimes people really are learning it word by word. It seems easier for you because you're already familiar with it.

> And the payoff is much higher: learning Chinese only lets you communicate with Chinese/Taiwanese people. Learning English lets you communicate with a huge proportion of the world who also learns English as a second language, simply because it's the current lingua franca.

Well, seeing as there are well over a billion of chinese people I'd think twice about using the word "only". Also there are many who speak it as a second language as well.

namarie··on Kenya will start teaching Chinese to elementary school students from 2020
Do you really think learning chinese won't be economically helpful in the coming decades?

Also, what makes you think learning a different language is just "learning different ways to say a word"? This only makes you seem uninformed on the subject. Do you speak more than one language?

namarie··on Where are they? Why I hope the search for ET life finds nothing (2008)
Do you have any sources for that?
namarie··on Jair Bolsonaro was elected president of Brazil. What are his policies?
Not a real option for some of us.
namarie··on Linus Torvalds apologizes for his behavior, takes time off
Ooops, my bad.
namarie··on Linus Torvalds apologizes for his behavior, takes time off
Why is your first instinct to think he will get worse?
namarie··on How to Get Rich (without Getting Lucky)
Sure, but I mean, "Everyone is trying to lead, but someone has to follow you"? I'm not sure how that helps at all.
namarie··on How to Get Rich (without Getting Lucky)
> For people with the lowest wage striving to make the ends mee the problem is of course lack of knowledge, time to acquire it, and time to get out of this local minima.

Also lack of opportunities for many.

namarie··on How to Get Rich (without Getting Lucky)
This should be titled "how not to write". It's terribly vague.
namarie··on How Children in a Maya Village Do Chores
Most of us brazilians see ourselves as western... It's not a question of being a member of a club, it's how most of us define most of our heritage, so somebody denying that seems at best very awkward and at worst very offensive.
namarie··on How Children in a Maya Village Do Chores
> Would the downvoters care to explain why? It's not a surprise :-) but hearing why would be....enlightening. Thanks.

Your comment has a condescending tone towards the people you claim to like. As if they're some king of exotic animal that you are so priviledged to watch in their natural habitat, and shame on these crazy western people who are oh so racist! There's plenty of tourists like that here in Brazil, and it rubs plenty of us off in the wrong way.

namarie··on How Children in a Maya Village Do Chores
> Western is just some huge bucket now that doesn't really have meaning.

I sincerely think it just means "northern european" to some people.

namarie··on How Children in a Maya Village Do Chores
So? Isn't Italy western?
namarie··on Has there been progress in philosophy?
Only on that site? Most comments on this thread are quite cringey as well to my ears...
namarie··on Has there been progress in philosophy?
Is ethics an impractical subject?
namarie··on Growing a Language, by Guy Steele (1998) [video]
Thank you for this! I'd forgot the name of the talk, and I spent some days looking for it, with no success...
namarie··on Zuckerberg on Cambridge Analytica situation
It's only moving fast when they're breaking someone else's business model, not their own one.
namarie··on The Real Adam Smith
Why do you think historians don't study the context of a particular topic? They certainly don't pick and choose quotes.
namarie··on Why Mickey Mouse’s 1998 copyright extension probably won’t happen again
I think it should be at least heavily taxed and wouldn't be very much opposed to it not actually passing down.
namarie··on Why Mickey Mouse’s 1998 copyright extension probably won’t happen again
Then people should save money they made from their works and pass it to their children. I've never heard of someone continuing to work after their death to provide for their children, which is what the current copyright system basically amounts to.
namarie··on Mastering Chess and Shogi by Self-Play with General Reinforcement Learning
Didn't they start it all by playing atari games?
namarie··on 'Big Void' Identified in Khufu's Great Pyramid at Giza
What good would destroying a pyramid do in regards for self-preservation?
namarie··on A Dam-Building Boom Is Transforming the Brazilian Amazon
Wind energy in the south, solar in the northeast - both closer to major population centers.
namarie··on Galileo and Heliocentricity: A Rough Guide (2014)
No, because there was a system (the Tychonic system IIRC) where the sun orbits the earth and the planets orbit the sun. It seems to have been popular at the time also.
namarie··on Wind Energy Is One of the Cheapest, and It's Getting Cheaper
That's a pretty big "if".
namarie··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
Neither can human population. At some point everyone would have houses.
namarie··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
Why should we look at it that way?
namarie··on To Understand Rising Inequality, Consider Janitors
>To live a life free of consequences?

To live a fulfilling life without the constant fear of not being able to adequately provide for yourself or your offspring?

>And who pays?

Since it'd be us, collectively, as a society who would benefit it'd make sense for us, collectively, as a society to pay.

namarie··on When the Rich Said No to Getting Richer
