n1000··on Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again
Apart from Apple Music and iCloud storage space what services does Apple offer / sell?
n1000··on 15-inch MacBook Pro mini-review: How much does Apple’s fastest laptop offer?
It surprises me that none of the reviews address fan noise. For me a big argument when buying my next Mac will be fan noise. I love my 2015 MBP but the fans make a lot of noise as soon as I use anything else than the iGPU and Terminal... Does the new Vega GPU option generally produce more heat (in this thermally maxed out body)?
n1000··on Apple Selling Exclusive Satechi USB-C Adapter
Is this acknowledgment that these ports should actually be part of a Pro laptop?
n1000··on Raspberry Pi 4 not working with some chargers

n1000··on Show HN: A minimalist Mac app that helps track, allocate, and plan your time
Looks nice! I am a huge fan of https://noteplan.co. They do many things right such as using iCloud for syncing with iOS and markdown seems like a natural choice to me. What I am missing is just what you offer. A focused task with a pomodoro timer... Maybe you should work together?
n1000··on I’ve Picked My Job over My Kids
Interesting! Yes, childhood trauma can be one outcome of neglect. Any articles you can recommend in particular?
n1000··on I’ve Picked My Job over My Kids
I am that child. My parents were very eager to make a great career. Today I suffer from the emotional neglect with some issues such as ADHD.

Being a father myself today, I do think kids can do with relatively little facetime. But the time that is devoted to them must be exclusive quality time that makes it clear you love them and that you are present. There are studies that have shown that if fathers take 30 minutes of exclusive attention for their kids every day, it has great benefits for the child‘s development.

n1000··on On Jony Ive Leaving Apple
To me it seems like somebody is afraid to make a tough decision. There have been indications that Ive wants to get out for quite a while. So they offered him more and more to make him stay. As the article says, they promoted his C-level job to a A-level one. They gave him ever more freedom, power, and probably money. Now came the point where his willingness to leave became too big. The obvious choice would have been a full divorce. Of course that is hard. But now Apple is basically outsourcing one of its core competences, product design. That is both dangerous and embarrassing for such an iconic company.
n1000··on The Popularity of the 4.7″ iPhone
Well, isn't the reason simply the timelag? The iPhone 6–8 are mid-lifecycle, the larger ones are relatively new, and the smaller ones rather at the end of their life cycle? After all iPhones seem to have a 5+ year lifespan [0]. Also the larger X phones come with a crazy price tag.

n1000··on 16-Inch MacBook Pro Said to Launch in September
Will this be the first MacBook that will be thicker than its previous gen? I am hoping Apple has realised that they are at the limit of what the current MacBook Pro can do in terms of thermals. I want a laptop that doesn't have its fans spinning non-stop only because I use an external screen or Firefox instead of Safari.
n1000··on Give Firefox a chance
Yes, all those Macbook Pros that operate at the limits of their thermal system start venting like crazy when using Firefox. I prefer it so much more over all other browsers, but this drove me to using Safari almost all the time.
n1000··on Ask HN: What can I do to accelerate scientific research?
A lot of journals (including the one I am an editor at) would probably consider leaving the fangs of elsevier and co and go full open access publishing. However, there are a few obstacles to that, such as missing open and reliable editorial and publishing platforms, contacts to libraries, etc.

In my opinion providing these things and actively encouraging journals to make the jump to open access would be a huge service to academia. Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if one could find funding for such a venture.

n1000··on Word processors are ditching equation editors in favour of LaTeX
other selling points include great look, reproducible, gitable, makes for great boilerplates, etc.
n1000··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
First I had toothache. After a while it occurred to me that this coincided with my stress level at work and that it actually was caused by my teeth grinding at night. And then I remembered how Mg helps me to become much more relaxed when under stress. Tried it and it worked.
n1000··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
There are different forms to take Mg and they seem to come with different effects and side effects. It may take a while to find one that works.
n1000··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
I recently realised that Mg is a reliable way for me to stop teeth grinding in my sleep.
n1000··on LaTeX Workflow on iPad
> The best thing about iPadOS is control. It feels so relaxing not having to worry about discord scanning all your processes and files just because you want to chat with your friends. I hope they'll never go back to allowing unsigned code.

It felt like a loss of control when I learned recently that facebook uses a loophole to exchange data with Whatsapp... https://medium.com/@gzanon/no-end-to-end-encryption-does-not...

n1000··on WeChat is Watching: Living in China with the app that knows everything about me
It’s weird. Nobody else in my company seems to have this issue. For me it is a mandatory step in the registration process.
n1000··on WeChat is Watching: Living in China with the app that knows everything about me
Going to China soon and everybody tells me WeChat will help me a lot over there. However, I cannot create my account without a "voiceprint". It wants me to read some numbers to fingerprint my voice. Apparently I cannot skip this step and I am not very comfortable with that.

Wasn't the problem with Microsoft telemetry that it is not so much opt-out as many users would wish?

n1000··on Elsevier journal editors resign, start rival open-access journal
Very interesting - thanks! For completeness' sake: GitHub-based publishing is possible too: http://www.theoj.org
n1000··on Elsevier journal editors resign, start rival open-access journal
Fully agree. But whenever an editorial board (like the one here) is fed up, they might be more likely to make the jump. I believe we may be about to reach a critical mass behind open access, but publishers won't make this easy.
n1000··on Elsevier journal editors resign, start rival open-access journal
So, as an academic myself, I have been wondering. Why don't some tech-savy people (the kinds that roam around HN) create an open-source publishing platform and offer journals to use their services for free / cheaply? Something like a GitLab for publishing papers. I wouldn't be surprised if the German government would agree to fund such a thing these days. This would make such a jump for willing editorial boards much easier.
n1000··on Ask HN: What is the difference between Burnout/Depression/Laziness/Wrong job?
I said “consider themselves”. Actually there is a study saying high IQ can worsen ADHD symptoms. To me it always felt like I was constantly battling against a invisible barrier that would eat away my motivation despite my many ideas and aspirations.
