mywittyname··on Afroman found not liable in defamation case
> don't necessarily think it was racially motivated

Growing up Adams county myself, I'll go ahead and be the one to tell you that it was absolutely racially motivated. You do not want to be a minority out there. Hell, you don't want to be perceived as being left leaning at all out there. This is the same area where a ~15 year old girl was assaulted on camera, in front of a police officer for participating in a protest (IIRC, BLM, but I could be wrong). This made the front page of reddit when it happeend.

And this is very likely, corruption motivated as well. I have enough family and friends left out there who have first hand experience with the politics and policing of the area to know. In fact, I have a late friend who had this exact thing happen (though, one county over), on video and everything. He's just not a D list celebrity with money, so nobody cared.

If someone wrote a documentary about this area and tried to pass it off as fiction, people wouldn't believe it, as it would be considered too absurd to be believable.

Depends on how you look at the numbers. But construction, logging, garbage collection and truck driving tend to be the most deadly depending on the specific metric (absolute, per capita, by industry, etc).

Expanding that, the deadliest part of being a police officer is almost certainly the driving component. No gun will save you from smashing your SUV into a pole. And the aftermarket modifications made to the vehicles aren't crash tested. A police cruiser is full of potential projectiles.

Simplifying here, but Motorsports is Forza's sim-style racing game, while Horizons is more of a arcade-like open world experience.

Some people like trying to perfect their technique running the same track over and over, while others just want to drive cool cars really fast. So MS wisely split the game to address those two core markets.

mywittyname··on Microsoft's 'unhackable' Xbox One has been hacked by 'Bliss'
Well, nobody talks about "unhackable" platforms that never get hacked. And you can't prove a negative.

The xbone's weakest security lasted nearly double the product's market life, and that's several times longer than security on the 360 lasted, if you don't count DVD firmware attacks, (which was also several times longer than the OGXB security lasted)

Xbox security has gone from lasting months -> years -> decade+. On top of that, the later revisions with better security have not been cracked.

mywittyname··on Microsoft's 'unhackable' Xbox One has been hacked by 'Bliss'
Agreed. I have a steam deck and my wife uses big picture mode on a PC. And both are full of jankiness that you don't get with something like the Switch. I actually bought a steam deck expecting a Switch-like experience, and man was I disappointed. Even the streaming is lacking compared to what Sony offers on the PS5.

I do wish Valve would spend some of their infinite money on sanding off the rough edges of Steam.

mywittyname··on Microsoft's 'unhackable' Xbox One has been hacked by 'Bliss'
But it took them 4x as long to be successful against the xbone.

I think the security team would call their mitigations a success.

I ended up cancelling gamepass after the subscription increase. I already own most of the games they offer, so it was really the odd AAA or indie release I'd play on it.

Indie games are cheap and most AAA titles go on sale within six months, which is fine because I usually don't play them day of launch.

Then there's the issue with gamepass games not working on my system. It's the only platform where I've had consistent issues getting games to run. Even free games like fortnite, were bundled with the wrong anticheat.

mywittyname··on Americans are destroying Flock surveillance cameras
The local government officials in charge of allowing these to be installed.

It also represents an opportunity for upstarts. If you want to get into local politics, this is a single issue that will unit voters and bring them in.

We had a city councilperson elected on the sole issue of replacing the purple street lights. She won decisively and her entire campaign was literally signs everywhere promising to fix the purple streetlights. (yes, they were fixed).

They'll stop once the police (or ICE, more likely) start dishing out horrific punishments for it.

mywittyname··on Toyotas and Terrorists: "Why are ISIS's trucks better than ours?" (2023)
The Hilux isn't "banned" from the USA. Toyota can federalize it and sell it here at any time. Toyota doesn't bring it here because we have the Tacoma - a truck designed to be more inline with American consumer tastes.

If Toyota wanted to, they could readily start manufacturing Hiluxes in Mexico and importing them into the USA. Presumably, the reason they don't do this is because Americans hate small pickup trucks. Every single truck on sale in the USDM sells better in larger footprint spec.

There's maybe 20k American who are willing to buy a new truck with the wheelbase the size of a Mustang (smallest Hilux). Even small BoF SUVs have the same problem. Take the FJ Cruiser, despite being a cult classic, it sold terribly in the USA, likely due to being too small.

Plus, they are expensive. In Australia, the cheapest non-work-spec Hilux trim is ~$55k - which is like $38kUSD. A Tacoma starts cheaper than that and is much larger.

Government, sure.

But it's the non-government entities you really need to be worried about. There are plenty of brokers buying up this data, making up assertions/predictions about the data, then selling it along downstream to secondary vendors who just blindly accept the data as true.

These are how people online get doxxed. It's not the government or FBI, it's these brokers who mine/buy data from sites/credit bureaus/local governments, link them across various social media, then build out profiles of individuals that they then sell to anyone with a big enough check book.

I've looked into these vendors before and their profiles on people are often wrong on several dimensions. So you don't want to do anything that's going to increase their ability to map you across the internet, because that's just going to improve their ability to identify you, while still selling lies about your personality.

Cesspit of AI-driven "validated" accounts for pushing propaganda.

It's the worst of both worlds.

mywittyname··on PlayStation 2 Recompilation Project Is Absolutely Incredible
We had clusters of them in university too.

If all you needed to do was vector math, a dedicated vector processor with eight cores that are capable of running as fast as the extremely wide bus could feed them with data is the way to do it. You couldn't buy anything close to it's capabilities (for that specific task) for the money.

I remember the course we used them in being hard as hell, and the professor didn't really have any projects prepared that would really push the system.

mywittyname··on Tesla ending Models S and X production
> Tesla is trying to create self driving taxis to make the rest of the auto industry obsolete.

This is a pretty baffling take. Most people in the world operate their own cars, and even if taxis were free, a large portion of them would continue to operate their own cars because it's convenient.

Taxis also don't replace a good chunk of the new vehicle market. People driving fleet trucks aren't going to work out of taxis. The top selling vehicles in the USA are pickup trucks, and it isn't even close.

Lastly, even if they succeed, competition will catch up and the market will be saturated.

In 20 years, people will still be buying the humble Civic. While the next 20 years at Tesla will probably be a string of market failures and wacky promises of personal space craft or some shit.

IBM was front and center with AI long before the AI bubble.

- Watson won jeopardy in 2011. And IBM launched several successful AI products using the tech.

- Deep Blue beat Kasparov in chess in '97. They also had other NN-based systems for playing games.

This is the standard for all financials, they just don't normally call it out as such.

It just means that they are assuming a fixed exchange rate for currencies over a period of time (often a month, quarter, or year), rather than reporting foreign income/holdings in current market value dollars.

I'm not an accountant, but I did do dev work for exactly this to align Netsuite with internal dashboards for reporting.

mywittyname··on Significant US farm losses persist, despite federal assistance
To a degree, those are also convenient excuses a country uses to protect their own food industries without being overtly protectionist. USA's agriculture industry can readily decimate the leaders in most other markets when they have to compete on price. Between the subsidies, lower standards, and sheer scale, it's practically impossible to compete.

Tariffs, obvs.

/s

Serious answer: deficit spending and let inflation act as the taxation mechanism.

mywittyname··on Danish pension fund divesting US Treasuries
To the rest of the world - Nothing. Trade works just fine without a reserve currency.

For the USA - massive inflation. All of those dollars are coming back home, which will weaken the dollar.

Plus, there's the second-order effects from a president taking control of the fed by trumping up charges on its members. So high inflation + low/zero/negative interest rates.

mywittyname··on Danish pension fund divesting US Treasuries
Two people buying and selling the same dollar a trillion time would hit that trade volume in a day. There's also a huge difference between short term and long term bonds.

So we need a better metric to evaluate this against. If we look at recent auctions, they typically move around 35-40 billion in 10 year notes and about 25-30 billion in 30 year notes. With the rest being short term.

In 2025, the Treasury issued $30 trillion total over 400 auctions.

So yes, $100MM is not a lot, but it's still three or so auctions worth of bonds. There's also the downstream impacts of this, as the Netherlands is likely no longer buying t-bonds in any form. And this is just one country.

mywittyname··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
> If Greenland was happening, what's taking them so long?

Other priorities.

Plus, they need to arrange some international support to ensure that enough countries recognize the transition. That takes time to put into place both the carrots (weapons for Middle Easterners) and sticks (tariffs for Europeans).

Once this happens, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Israel, and maybe Egypt, Japan, SK, will recognize the transition as official.

mywittyname··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
Quebec already has laws on the book that make them de jure separate from Canada by claiming the Provincial governments have powers that supersede Ottawa's authority [0]. Nobody really talks about it beyond a, "lol no". It's the foundation of a crisis.

So Canada is already fractured. And there's a strong chance Québécois offer support of Alberta and Sas succession. Perhaps there will be some reciprocity and all three provinces leave Canada at the same time.

Which leaves western Canada in a bit of a pickle.

mywittyname··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
> neither the Canada nor Greenland thing is going to happen

Greenland is happening, and will be underway soon. It's just a matter of how much international support it will have initially, and how the USA will strong arm support.

Canada is on the back burner after the realization that a country with a leader who was the Governor of the national banks of two major countries might know a thing or two about economic warfare.

mywittyname··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
I agree with your assessment. But I think the leaders pulling these strings are not fully appreciating the costs of this security.

Controlling all of these foreign lands is pointless if the country collapses then Balkanizes. The past decade has brought so many events that nobody thought could ever happen that we need to be rearrange our beliefs. It's very possible that those of us around in 10 years will see this time period as being part of the Second American Civil war.

The only thing keeping people almost pacified is the economy is not total dogshit yet. But that's tenuous at best.

There's going to be a post-trump power vacuum. It will likely be much more bloody than our current situation.
