myth_buster··on Designing very large JavaScript applications
This is a talk so it makes sense to put the text on the slide and also talk about it.

The image caption, I took it as medium's implementation of although text for cases the images don't load.

In this case they just happened to be similar.

myth_buster··on Ask HN: Does SEO still work in 2018?
At it's core SEO boils down to a protocol for helping search engines make sense of your website/content. If you look at it that way, then yes SEO still works in 2018.

But more often than not, SEO is an umbrella term which encapsulates both the good and the bad practices. Given the work Google and others have done on weeding out the latter using ML/AI as well as human intervention [0] I would say you can't be sure whether those would work. It's contingent on Search Engines being aware of the practice and penalizing that behavior. So it may work today but not guaranteed to work tomorrow.

myth_buster··on China Is Nationalizing Its Tech Sector
The tech sector in the west can breath a sigh of relief.

It's no surprise the power grabbing politicians would want to control the booming tech sector. But I naively thought that their affair with quasi-capitalism would run longer. We have been here before and know how nationalization affects innovation. Being a leader of a communist nation gives you perhaps more opportunity to run these kinds of massive experiments while thinking this time things will be different. Capitalistic (Darwinian) society wouldn't be as forgiving.

myth_buster··on “Close to tears, he left at the intermission”: how Kubrick upset Clarke (2017)
Kubrick shot it using Super Panavision 70 film and it's supposed to be seen in theatre for the immersive experience. Sadly there are only a handful of theaters that can screen 70mm.

I love to geek out on this film so this thread is a welcome respite.

myth_buster··on OVH CEO: Unlike Amazon, Google, “we will never be in competition with you”

Spyglass, which licensed its browser to Microsoft in return for a percentage
of each sale; Microsoft turned the browser into Internet Explorer and bundled
it with Windows, giving it away to gain market share but effectively
destroying any chance of Spyglass making money from the deal they had signed
with Microsoft; Spyglass sued for deception and won a $8 million settlement.
Woah!
myth_buster··on Statement by FTC Regarding Reported Concerns about Facebook Privacy Practices
Gotcha, thanks.
myth_buster··on Statement by FTC Regarding Reported Concerns about Facebook Privacy Practices
> [FTC] has an open non-public investigation into these practices

Not familiar with open non-public legalese but it sounds like an oxymoron.

myth_buster··on Congrats Dropbox
I see you getting some flak here but for what it's worth, I read it as a very grounded discussion and feedback. I appreciate the fact that you conceded the points that seemed reasonable post Drew's comment.
myth_buster··on 50M Facebook profiles harvested for Cambridge Analytica in major data breach
Sorry for the crappy formatting, can't edit now, so here's pprint version:

a quarter of potential US voters.

myth_buster··on Who Killed the Junior Developer?
To quote Feynman...

When I was at Princeton in the 1940s I could see what happened to those great minds at the Institute for Advanced Study, who had been specially selected for their tremendous brains and were now given this opportunity to sit in this lovely house by the woods there, with no classes to teach, with no obligations whatsoever. These poor bastards could now sit and think clearly all by themselves, OK? So they don't get an idea for a while: They have every opportunity to do something, and they're not getting any ideas. I believe that in a situation like this a kind of guilt or depression worms inside of you, and you begin to worry about not getting any ideas. And nothing happens. Still no ideas come.
Nothing happens because there's not enough real activity and challenge: You're not in contact with the experimental guys. You don't have to think how to answer questions from the students. Nothing!

myth_buster··on Tea if by sea, cha if by land: Why the world only has two words for tea

myth_buster··on Call of Duty gaming community points to ‘swatting’ in Wichita police shooting

“A male came to the front door,” Livingston said. “As he came to the front door, one of our officers discharged his weapon.”

Livingston didn’t say if the man, who was 28, had a weapon when he came to the door, or what caused the officer to shoot the man. Police don’t think the man fired at officers, but the incident is still under investigation, he said. The man, who has not been identified by police, died at a local hospital.
This seems quite unusual. Looking at details, Wichita KS has a population of 380K. Perhaps they don't see much of hostage situation and were ill prepared for it. Would be interesting to see the results of investigation. Also there were studies that looked at how stress could result in these kind of scenario. IIRC, one of the triggers were being on a suicide watch/dispatch call.

Is social media the goto for reporting security vulnerabilities in 2017?

If I remember correctly, one is supposed to make it public once patched or in event of no response, no?

myth_buster··on Peter Thiel and the Stanford Review
A network graph would have been more efficient than the bulk of 5k words in the article.

The article goes in depth on the first part (Thiel and Stanford Review) but doesn't go into the _how they built a silicon valley empire_ part.

Main takeaway is Thiel has been politically active since his sophomore years and his involvement in the current administration is in agreement with his past. So for most people who knew Thiel, it may not have come as a surprise.

myth_buster··on Leonardo Da Vinci Painting Sells for $450.3M, Shattering Auction Records

Some art experts pointed to the painting’s damaged condition and its questionable authenticity.

myth_buster··on Most Waymo Patent Claims Dropped in Autonomous Car Fight with Uber
Uber's response to it is even more baffling!

"Waymo’s retreat on three of their four patent claims is yet another sign that they have overpromised and can’t deliver," Uber said in a statement. "Not only have they uncovered zero evidence of any of the 14,000 files in question coming to Uber, they now admit that Uber’s LiDAR design is actually very different than theirs. Faced with this hard truth, Waymo has resorted to floating conspiracy theories not rooted in fact, doing everything they can to put the focus on sensation rather than substance."

myth_buster··on SoundCloud cuts jobs, closes SF and London offices
On a tangent, I now hope that A16Z podcast will be available on google play et al. That was the only reason for me to use Soundcloud and it frustrated me when I used it because it severely lacked features something as trivial as sorting by podcast date.
