mystcb··on Monitor Airplane Traffic with a Raspberry Pi
Currently I have a similar setup but the data is sent to FlightRadar24 and you get a $499.99/year Business subscription for free for doing exactly this (but sending the data to them).

So, the question I wanted to bring up (and might be controversial) is to know what the differences between the two are? Taking a quick look around it does feel like FlightAware has a lot more openness to it than FR24, which is interesting for me, but I am interested in other opinions on this?

I mean, getting the subscription for pushing the data is always a nice bonus, kinda tempted to just push data to both, and have another Pi sitting in my loft!

Personally, I love just being nosey and seeing the flights around my area, but I am just a bit strange like that ;)

mystcb··on DigitalOcean Networking Issues (22nd Sept 2020) - LON1 Region
Feels pretty nasty - I host a single droplet for non-critical stuff, and I can't get any details from the console for it either. Not sure if it's still running in the background or completely dead.

Be interesting to see how long it goes on for, its been a few hours now with no updates.

https://twitter.com/DOStatus/status/1308495463092371456 <-- Twitter seems to be collecting people asking, but not really much in the public eye.

Waits patiently for an update

EDIT @ 22:16 BST (22:16 UTC)

Just got this as an email. Interesting... --- Start: 2020-09-22 22:00:00 (UTC) Hello,

We have identified an issue on the physical machine hosting one or more of your Droplets, which are listed below. In order to minimize disruption, we will be migrating the Droplets to a healthier physical machine. Throughout the migration, Control Panel and API events - including: power offs, resizes, and attempts to destroy the Droplet - will not succeed for the affected Droplet(s).

In order to minimize downtime, we will attempt to perform live migrations in all possible cases. A live migration would result in no downtime, but minor performance decreases in disk I/O and a second or less of packet loss as the network is switched over to the new physical host.

In the event that we are not able to perform a live migration of a Droplet, we will perform an offline migration during which the Droplet will be powered off and migrated offline during the window.

We apologize for any inconvenience and will be happy to answer any questions or concerns - simply reply to this email or open a support ticket on your account.

Best Regards, DigitalOcean Cloud Operations ---

mystcb··on Zoom Security Exploit: Cracking private meeting passwords
I am going to raise my hands and say I have heard from them. I logged a support request on March 24th (the day the UK went into lockdown, so I was already expecting a delay). I finally got a response back on July 20th. It is a shame they are slow, as they have been really responsive in the past.

Hope that helps set a bit of a benchmark!

mystcb··on Website allows you to experience what it is like to live with dyslexia (2016)
Interesting! I have to admit, I do look at that and think that it is a large exaggeration - however that is acknowledged in other thread here.

On the other side, I suffer from migraines (the ones that give you auras and take you out for days), and the visualisation of the letters changing is exactly how words look when I try and read text during my aura phase. I am going to have to borrow this site to explain to my doctor what I see here, as this is probably the most accurate representation of the effect I have seen. (TL;DR: Thank you!)

Now I need to look away, because the effect is causing my vision to go a little funny! :)

mystcb··on BGP and RPKI
I have recently (within the last year) joined AAISP, and I am in agreement with you on this.

One thing it does show to me is that, even though the site was made available by Cloudflare only recently, my ISP has already acknowledged and responded to the post. Given that they have explained the situation, what it means, and that they are actively looking into it. The trust they built up with me since I started with them, means that I do trust that they are looking into this.

BGP as a whole does need a solution, and this may be one of a few ways to achieve this.

I am glad they are not rushing their solution so that my connection stays online while I have to stay isolated.

On the flip side, I do agree that some ISPs will drag their feet, and try to ignore everything for the sake of "money" or "can't be bothered" types of excuses. These are the ones that really should be pushed hard against to make the changes that are required. - I am just glad AAISP isn't one of them.

mystcb··on Apple acquires Dark Sky
I mean, if true - I offer my congratulations to the Dark Sky founders and I wish them the best of luck.

That said - part of me is wondering, it's April 1st tomorrow. Part of me is REALLY hoping it is a joke too!

Only a 100% markup? I am sure it will be worth more than that in the future ;)
mystcb··on Gandi loses data, customers told to use their own backups
Just looked about and found these:

"Does GoDaddy register domains you search?" (2011) https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2326790

Within this, was the comment that reminded me which company it was I was talking about (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2327152) - Network Solutions used to do this - and there is a Wiki link in there which gives the process a name! TIL! :)

mystcb··on Gandi loses data, customers told to use their own backups
I am sure, in the past, one of the domain registrars took the liberty of actually registering your searched domain, deliberately, so that you had to go through them to get the domain later on? - I can't remember who it was, but it was an automated process.

I know it was very shortly stopped once people complained, but it goes to show that it has been done before.

Getting rich off domain's - sounds like a solid business plan!

mystcb··on iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
I somewhat have to agree on the "I used to want the new product as soon as it was shown off" bit. I mean to be clear there are some nice improvements on the iPhone, and it packs a hell of a punch compared to previous versions.

For me, it was how the announcements were made, they did seem to just feel like they had a massive "Wow" factor.

Even way back on the first iPhone announcement - When Steve was on stage and talking about the Palm and Blackberry devices having "physical keyboards", and that he had merged it all with the iPod with touch screens, to me that seemed like a massive jump. (OK I admit, at the time I was very much in the camp of "my Blackberry's keyboard is the finest!", but I watch the announcement back again... there was a very Steve Jobs finesse to the whole thing!).

The more recent announcements have kinda been a bit "meh", and I think maybe it's just that - I think a new type of device that has not been thought about, would bring back the "Wow" factor again.

I think, just for me anyway, that jumping over the releases (so skip a release and upgrade), I see more of a jump, than say if I was going between each version.

Anyway, my thoughts - and I don't know - maybe others see the same with the announcements not quite as they used to be - due to the slowness of "upgrades" to the product.

mystcb··on Vulnerability in the Mac Zoom client allows malicious websites to enable camera
> [UPDATE 2:35 pm PT, Tuesday 7/9] The July 9 patch to the Zoom app on Mac devices detailed below is now live. You may see a pop-up in Zoom to update your client, download it at zoom.us/download, or check for updates by opening your Zoom app window, clicking zoom.us in the top left corner of your screen, and then clicking Check for Updates.

--

Looks like Zoom have decided to remove the Web Server from MAC and pushed out an update directly to the clients (before this, you couldn't get the Zoom Client to check for updates automatically) - The popup appeared post meeting.

mystcb··on Google Cloud Networking Incident Postmortem
While I would like to say AWS hasn't had that issue, in 2017 it did (just not because of load balancers being unavailable, but as a consequence of the S3 outage [1].

When the primary S3 nodes went down, it caused connectivity issues to S3 buckets globally, and services like RDS, SES, SQS, Load Balancers, etc etc, all relied on getting config information from the "hidden" S3 buckets, thus people couldn't edit load balancers.

(Outage also meant they couldn't update their own status page! [2])

mystcb··on Apple Sign In
Is that block a recent thing? It might be different as for my on GSuite account I can add the name+addon@mydomain.com - it might just be a difference between the "public" Gmail system vs the Gsuite Gmail system. In which case, my question is completely invalid and feel free to ignore ;)

Note: This comes from my own developer account having 3 name+addon@ accounts live, and working with things like ApplePay etc for testing.

mystcb··on Taiwanese grandpa plays Pokémon Go with 11 phones
Looks like someone in the comments (https://www.theverge.com/2018/11/7/18072192/pokemon-go-11-ph...) has posted a picture showing that there are 15 of them on his body harness! (The picture does make it a lot easier to see them when they are pointed out! :) )

Actually impressed with that setup though, not sure you can just go down to your local shop and buy a 11/12/15 phone harness!

Thanks for the link! - Just as I posted that, I refreshed and the update showed up! (Updated my original message to include the link!)

mystcb··on The dots do matter: how to scam a Gmail user
No, you can't sign up like that - you can choose to register the firstname.lastname@gmail.com and it will make that your primary. If you sign up without the dots, you get an error message:

"Someone already has that username. Note that we ignore full stops and capitalisation in usernames. Try another?"

mystcb··on Simone Giertz makes a living creating shitty robots (2016) [video]
I wish to echo this too -- doesn't matter what she has done and where she has come from. She is making a difference to a large number of lives out there, and getting more people into engineering, robotics and science - at all levels and ages!

Hope that these messages to eventually get back to her, because she deserves to know how much of a difference she is making.

Looks like it [is a joke!]. I mean, the new website is only a day old, hosted with "Hostgator", uses a free theme (http://websites.simplesphere.net/piupiu/) and NGINX has directory listing switched on! That and all the news reports are syndicated from the same place, so its just propagating all over the place.

That - or I am mistaken, in which case - "All Hail our new Blockchain overlords" :)

While I am on the fence with a lot of what is happening, I would have thought a more appropriate analogy would be to: Break into a poorly secured garage, that has been sold as a single unit to the customer, seal the door and any other access via welding so that no one can ever use the garage ever again.
