mx12··on Poll: how do you use HN?
I use the RSS feed. If you use Safari there is a way to drag a feed to your address bar and have it automatically update. This can also aggregate all your feeds into a single bookmark bar item, but I don't know how many people know/use this feature in Safari. I tried using the RSS read in mail, but I get enough stuff in my mailbox.
mx12··on Ask HN: What code editor do you use?
Eclispe for java. I could not imagine writing java without an IDE.

TextWrangler/BBEdit, for most other files. I like the built in support for sftp, so I can work remotely in a gui.

For the quick edits from the command line I use the old standby, vi.

mx12··on Why Go to Graduate School and Getting into the Program of your Dreams
Great timing, I'm working on my Statement of Purpose right now.
mx12··on Why Learning from PowerPoint Lectures is Frustrating
I agree 100%! I think the best classes that I have taken have been the ones where the professor can digress on the topics and give you a deeper understanding for the topic. I had an older OS professor who would go off on tangents about the companies and people who had an impact on the early Operating Systems, which has been one of the most intriguing classes I have taken.

I agree that professor seem scripted when they rely on powerpoint slides. Also, I have noticed that professors are relying more and more on the slides from the book, which tend just to be a bulleted version of the book.

Death by powerpoint!

mx12··on Ask HN: Review my app Interactive Programming Books
I tried to install your program and the installer worked fine, but I couldn't get the application to run under Snow Leopard. I can send you the log file if you would like. Also, you may want to consider packaging it as a DMG.

I think its a cool concept and would be very useful for people who are learning how to program. I remember when I was a kid and tried to learn how to program, the major obstacle was dealing with Visual C's interface.

mx12··on Ask HN: What is your Home Page in your browser?
Just google.com, plan and simple.
mx12··on Perl far from dead, more popular than you think
There are definitely areas where Perl is still alive. I work in a bioinformatics lab and we use Perl for the majority the analysis software we write. Mostly because of Perl's strengths of handling files compared to languages like Java.
