mvolfik··on A lost tourist who thought Maine was San Francisco
There's also Moscow, Idaho somewhere in there
mvolfik··on The Joy of Fuck-You Money (2018)
Yes, and this is even more relevant now in the pandemic. Many countries have agreed to ensure access to COVID vaccines for third world, yet they are still getting pretty much none, while Europe is already full of scandals with celebrities and rich people skipping priority lines and getting vaccinated
mvolfik··on Show HN: Horcrux, a Playground for Shamir Secret Sharing
to be fair - this cool, but the heavy lifting part is actually the interesting one
mvolfik··on Mypyc: Compile type-annotated Python to C
This sounds a bit like a GUI application, so containers would bring their own problems. Also you again force end user install docker etc
mvolfik··on Mypyc: Compile type-annotated Python to C
Yes, this. Actually I first shared it here, because I thought that's cool and could work quite cleanly since mypy works well, but when I actually tried compiling one of my Advent of Code solutions with it, what i got was goto stuffed mess. I know I can't expect nice C code, but i certainly didn't expect gotos.

As for the performance gain - 13.5 s with Python, 9 s compiled. It was a naive implementation of AoC 2020/23, so a lot of array cutting, concatenation etc. So this isn't really math, rather lot of RAM I/O

mvolfik··on Total Cookie Protection
What's an example of this?
mvolfik··on Total Cookie Protection
What would be the point of localstorage if JS couldn't access it? Cookies can be set and get via http headers, but is localstorage available by other means than JS?
mvolfik··on I Am Bezos
you actually lose some because you pay taxes, don't you?
mvolfik··on Show HN: Boardly – Free, Simple Planning Board. New Hotwire Project
Cool! Is there some write-up on how did using hotwire turn out? I personally don't think it's a very good concept, but I'm curious what people who actually use it have to say
mvolfik··on Functorio
Did we just automate automation
mvolfik··on Czech gunmaker CZG buys Colt in cash and stock deal
Yeah, Czechia is full of surprising moments. I remember my classmate bringing knife that could reliably kill somebody to school and spreading butter on his bread with it. The teachers noticed, made some stupid joke about it, and continued lecturing.
mvolfik··on Preparing to Issue 200M Certificates in 24 Hours
hmm, the logs are valid point. what scenario are we addressing here then?

but the issuance time isn't relevant, they can easily backdate the cert

mvolfik··on Preparing to Issue 200M Certificates in 24 Hours
The thing is that we're not talking downtime here, but rather something in the CA compromised, which would mean that pretty much ANY website could be impersonated, as the attacker could issue a Let's Encrypt CA valid certificate for it. That is mitigated by invalidating this CA, but that also invalidates all legit certificates previously issued by them. So they need to reissue them all
mvolfik··on Pattern matching accepted for Python
hmm, so I would need to use some namespace class https://docs.python.org/3.8/library/types.html#types.SimpleN...
mvolfik··on Pattern matching accepted for Python
yeah, I would also expect the linters to catch this. has some way to allow use of non-dotted constants been considered? something like window.global_variable in JavaScript? Or would I need to do something like this:?

  NOT_FOUND = 404
  m = {"NOT_FOUND": NOT_FOUND}
  match value:
    case m["NOT_FOUND"]:
      pass
mvolfik··on CD Projekt Red has been subject to a cyber attack and ransom demand
the note is likely truncated (there aren't contact details either)
mvolfik··on CD Projekt Red has been subject to a cyber attack and ransom demand
It doesn't always have to be like this though. Look at Factorio – the devs are happy (looking from the outside, but they are always very enthusiastic about how they love the game), the community loves it (there are infinite remarks of people who sunk thousands of hours into this game, all for a single payment of 25 €), and they don't seem to have any financial issues either. I have not seen many disappointed people around Factorio (maybe that dev of the IR mod [1]).

mvolfik··on Tesla Invests $1.5B in Bitcoin, Plans to Accept Cryptocurrency
Waiting to see the comments here. Did Musk just change his opinion, or go insane? Or could this happen without Musk's direct intervention?
mvolfik··on Complexity Explained
I have no idea what this means, I love the visualizations though
mvolfik··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
what is the benefit of threadpool though? am I understanding it correctly that due to GIL, python will just keep switching the threads, so instead of running A then B both at 100% speed, both will run concurrently at 50% speed (+/- overhead)?
mvolfik··on FastAPI framework, high perf, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production
regarding the uvicorn-gunicorn-fastapi image - is it really a good idea? you'll likely gain some other dependencies as the project grows, and having some dependencies in external docker image (the tiangolo's one pip installs fastapi + stuff), and some installed by your own means sounds like a lot of trouble headache quite soon... that's why I personally went with just python image, and installing everything from pipenv
mvolfik··on Many use cases don’t require Kafka (2019)
this. I'm working on a project which will need to be deployed in a local network without internet access. deploying kafka is a nightmare, more so in docker or k8s. I ended up switching to other tech rather than undergo this
mvolfik··on Robinhood apparently selling people's shares ”for their own good“
that would explain a lot, this tweet looks a LOT past the line what I would expect them to do.

though there's also this screenshot: https://twitter.com/555Sunny/status/1354854993946406917?s=20

can anyone confirm if this is actually happening or if this is what margin trades at robinhood look like?

mvolfik··on PfSense Is Closed Source

mvolfik··on Cache Management Lessons Learned
What the hell is going on with the line breaks there? That's painful to read on mobile
mvolfik··on Ask HN: How to continue to grow as a high-schooler?
Oh yes, basic accounting and work/business law. I was recently shocked to realize that I know exactly nothing about this, even though I'm attending a 'gymnasium' (a school with advanced academic education in many directions, wiki says comparable to US 'preparatory schools') and this is a thing many people will need in their life.

The reviews look very positive, I'll look into it, thanks!

mvolfik··on Ask HN: Should I learn arch Linux or Debian Linux?
Not sure about the Ubuntu recommendation... I have used the LTS releases on my laptop for 5 years without reinstall or any major issues (I'm a student, so the complexity of what I use increased gradually), but the latest update f*cked a lot of things up. Didn't have time to do a reinstall yet, but i sense it's highly needed. So Debian might be a better option at the time, especially as stuff is expected to be tinkered with more (switch to Wayland etc). Oh, and don't get me started on the Ubuntu Python installation :/
mvolfik··on Ask HN: What are your go-to free services to use for at-home projects?
I build web scraper and deployed to Scrapinghub scrapy cloud (not sure what it allows for free, i have student benefits) and Cloudflare workers. Allows Cron actions, logic on the backend and static files (after you understand how wrangler works, good luck at that tho (: )

See https://github.com/mvolfik/eyp-calls

mvolfik··on Ask HN: What are your go-to free services to use for at-home projects?
- Heroku hosting

- Cloudflare free "reverse proxy" to use https on custom domain (Heroku won't do that for free)

- ImprovMX email forwarding, as for sending, you can abuse Gmail (or likely any other email service), and setup DKIM signing to remove the "via gmail.com" mark and have your emails trusted

- freenom.com free domains

- Heroku postgres and redis, if you run into the 10k rows limit, ElephantSQL (i don't remember the limitations there) or setup a postgres server on GCP compute engine

mvolfik··on I tried creating a web browser and Google blocked me (2019)
The thing is he isn't circumventing copyright protection. He is just allowing it to play in his browser too, no downloading etc. I'm a legal noob, but there always was that "fair interests" like making stuff work on different devices/OSs (youtube-dl is hiding behind this a bit), would it not apply here?
