mvieira38··on Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope
It's unfortunate because there really isn't anything anyone can do except wait for regulation or try raising awareness/usage of crypto payments or cash by mail
mvieira38··on Brazil central bank to launch Pix installment feature in September
I meant for everyday stuff, not larger purchases where discounts may apply, I may have oversimplified. I do buy stuff with Pix now and then, but day-to-day NFC credit is my go-to
mvieira38··on How Anthropic teams use Claude Code
Different situation. Uber's entire strategy was to "disrupt" the transportation industry by undercutting everyone, with the promise that eventually adoption (and monetization via data, advertising, etc.) would be large enough for fees not to rise so much as to push consumers and drivers into the established taxi industry. Anthropic, on the other hand, is a competitor brand in a brand-new industry, one with heavy reliance on capex and exploding employee salaries, for that matter.
mvieira38··on How Anthropic teams use Claude Code
I'm surprised they let it generate the tests. Aren't the tests precisely what you want to have fine control over, moreso than the code itself? Letting it write them itself feels like yielding control over what is considered "correct" code
mvieira38··on Brazil central bank to launch Pix installment feature in September
You're wasting a relevant amount of money by not using a credit card in Brazil. Interest rates are so high right now they have reached 1% monthly, which you can pocket by just delaying payment on everything for a month. And credit is stupid cheap here, too, with a bunch of different picks for free credit cards giving thousands of reais for anyone.

If you have some money you can easily get a card with high cashback, as well, in the 1%+ territory depending on if you want big banks or not, and pay no fees.

mvieira38··on Brazil central bank to launch Pix installment feature in September
Wasn't BCB breached for a couple hundred million reais this month, as well? Maybe they are trying to keep the code closed because they know it's insecure
mvieira38··on Graphene OS: a security-enhanced Android build
Banking apps are spyware, that's why they avoid open source OSes, not because they want to vendor-lock you. Smartphone data collected by a banking app is basically the most valuable in the world for advertisers, as they get the telemetry instantly crossed with a full(ish) picture of your spending habits and all the KYC identifiers too.
mvieira38··on When swiping supplants scissors: The hidden cost of touchscreens
Chromebooks in school seemed like a great idea before attention economy destroyed society. If your kid is spending their time playing with legos, drawing, etc, and for homework they use the chromebook, which develops rudimentary computer skills and vastly reduces teacher workload, then it's great. Different picture when their past time is tiktok, roblox, etc

Inb4 "I grew up gaming all day and I'm fine" millenials: the social fabric of your life didn't depend on the games, they were games. Social media is vastly different. (also you arguably could have done better with better activities)

mvieira38··on Itch.io: Update on NSFW Content
Cash is "untraceable", are you sighing at that too?

Aaaaand this is why we need crypto, and with crypto I mean Monero
mvieira38··on Diet, not lack of exercise, drives obesity, a new study finds
I'm a Luka fan, but he does look a (hehe) little chubby these past 2 seasons and it has impacted his game noticeably. Just compare the explosiveness from his first seasons to now
mvieira38··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
Nice! Thanks for the sources
mvieira38··on Diet, not lack of exercise, drives obesity, a new study finds
Would you say Luka, Neymar and others are outrunning their diets? Did Shaq, too? You don't automatically get a good physique by being an athlete, you still have to earn it. People just see that all of the top athletes have earned it and take it for granted, like they don't have world class dieticians and a huge financial incentive to maintain a strict diet
mvieira38··on Diet, not lack of exercise, drives obesity, a new study finds
You're trying to eat clean instead of lean/volumous. Why care about palm oil or salt in peanut butter if it's still like straight fat that you're passing on your bread every day? The actual diet move would be to switch that to some fruit and low fat yogurt. Same thing with whole grain bread, you just got some more fiber and vitamins but the calories are mostly all there still, especially if it's sandwich bread.

Clean/natural/unprocessed is an independent variable from fattening. There is correlation in that processed foods are sometimes highly palatable, but there is no causation. To illustrate, you could top your toast with either honey or Mrs Butterworth's Sugar Free syrup. Honey will add like 10x more calories, but is unprocessed, while the syrup is as processed as there can be

Maybe the future is "LLMO" instead of SEO, where pages are optimized to be more easily readable and navigable by LLMs and agents. Ironically this would make them better IMO, less Javascript bloat, faster load times, no cookies or tracking...
mvieira38··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
Unfortunately for you this kind of content does seem to be going the way of Blockbuster. But the writing was on the wall for years now with how much Google Search became useless due to over-SEOification of every website, LLMs were just the dagger
mvieira38··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
This is a feature, not a bug. In chatbot mode and in coding, the vast majority of consumers do not have the critical thinking skills necessary to realise the models are making stuff up, so the AI companies are incentivized to train accordingly. When the same models are used for agent mode the problem is just way more glaring, they don't respect (or fear) the terminal as much as they should, try to give the user some positive output and here we are
mvieira38··on I watched Gemini CLI hallucinate and delete my files
I suspect this has to do with newer training procedures for reasoning models, where they are injecting stuff like "wait a minute" to force the model to reason more, as described in the Deepseek R1 training docs
mvieira38··on I know genomes and I didn’t delete my data from 23andMe
This fallacy is oh so common in folks resisting privacy measures. I guess it's psychologically tough for them to realise how bad the situation is, so they have to go to any place they can to resist changing their habits
mvieira38··on AccountingBench: Evaluating LLMs on real long-horizon business tasks
[about the website design] As a bonus for my fellow privacy schizos, the page works fine with 3rd party frames and 3rd party scripts disabled on uBlock, and still looks very good with no remote fonts and no large media. Quite an accomplishment for such a cool looking page
mvieira38··on Show HN: ggc – A terminal-based Git CLI written in Go
1- mostly CLI but I'll use VSCode for merge editing, I think it's very nice

2- no aliases, I want to be aware of every step

3- for browsing history I'll go to Github (at my current job), I think it's a more pleasant experience

4- I don't apply

mvieira38··on AI capex is so big that it's affecting economic statistics
How is NLP solved, exactly? Can LLMs reliably (that is, with high accuracy and high precision) read, say, literary style from a corpus and output tidy data? Maybe if we ask them very nicely it will improve the precision, right? I understand what we have now is a huge leap, but the problems in the field are far from solved, and honestly BERT has more use cases in actual text analysis.

"What happened with LLMs" is what exactly? From some impressive toy examples like chatbots we as a society decided to throw all our resources into these models and they still can't fit anywhere in production except for assistant stuff

mvieira38··on AI capex is so big that it's affecting economic statistics
Another perspective for the kaboom is search and programming tasks for the average person.

For the average consumer, LLM chatbots are infinitely better than Google at search-like tasks, and in effect solve that problem. Remember when we had to roll our eyes at dad because he asked Google "what are some cool restaurants?" instead of "nice restaurants SF 2018 reddit"? Well, that is over, he can ask that to ChatGPT and it will make the most effective searches for him, aggregate and answer. Remember when a total noob had to familiarize himself with a language by figuring out hello world, then functions, etc? Now it's over, these people can just draft a toy example of what they want to build with Cursor instantly, tell it to make everything nice and simple, and then have ChatGPT guide them through what is happening.

In some industries you just don't need that much more code quality than what LLMs give you. A quick .bat script doesn't need you to know the best implementation of anything, neither does a Python scraper using only the stdlib, but these were locked behind programming knowledge before LLMs

mvieira38··on AI capex is so big that it's affecting economic statistics
Your examples are not LLMs, though, and don't really behave like them at all. If we take the chess analogy and design an "LLM-like chess engine", it would behave like an average 1400 London spammer, not like Stockfish, because it would try to play like the average human plays in it's database.

It isn't entirely clear what problem LLMs are solving and what they are optimizing towards... They sound humanlike and give some good solutions to stuff, but there are so many glaring holes. How are we so many years and billions of dollars in and I can't reliably play a coherent game of chess with ChatGPT, let alone have it be useful?

mvieira38··on How I Use Kagi
I'm curious, how is the AI assistant experience different from Perplexity or even ChatGPT's search feature? Is it just the convenience of having several models there or are the outputs inherently better because the results are from Kagi's engine instead of google?
mvieira38··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
It would, depending on some factors. The false belief that there were fewer female aspies was pervasive, for example, and that was troublesome for many girls.

Anyway, I suspect "in the past" is further in the past than you think: the distinction between Asperger's and ASD has been officially ditched by the medical community for 12 years now, at least insofar as the DSM represents consensus.

mvieira38··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
I think the research on this is not really about diagnosis tools, but about understanding autism. What even is this disorder that makes you have such wide effects as not being able to look people in the eyes to walking weird to even pooping weird? Why does it make you like some stuff more than other stuff, too?
mvieira38··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
"Neurodivergent" doesn't exist, it's just an umbrella term for any neurodevelopmental disorder (such as ADHD, autism, Tourette's, intellectual disability)
mvieira38··on Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk
It hasn't been redefined at all, you just weren't aware of all the intricacies and conflated every possible symptom into one large, uncommon stereotype, while in reality people in the spectrum are more common than you think but show some symptoms more than others and some not at all.

John, 38 yo virgin, spending 50% of his income on Gundam figurines while living with his aging mother and having no IRL friends is supposedly not "autistic enough" for you if he can hold a job, walk and talk normally? What about that one girl you went to high school with who couldn't stop talking about Supernatural and had a full-on meltdown in front of the whole class on more than one occasion, to the point where she had no friends by junior year and got severely depressed?

These characters were seen as "just weird" until actual scientists started figuring out they were autistic, and now they might have a better life with treatment and the necessary disability benefits

mvieira38··on Retro gaming YouTuber Once Were Nerd sued and raided by the Italian government
Not the entire library, though. Games that aren't offered in any form anywhere, and also games that weren't localized (like Mother 3) shouldn't have copyright enforceable. It's either you give up production of the game or you produce it forever, no other sane way to go about it
