mvelbaum··on Overlooked No More: Cordell Jackson, Elder Stateswoman of Rock 'N' Roll
Yeah, it's pretty pathetic, honestly.

Overlooked? I've just looked at a few videos of hers playing and she's pretty bad. Not sure what the point here is, there were a bunch of very good female leads in a variety of genres, but honestly, it's the dudes that did pretty much all the influential stuff -- as in pretty much any field. Deal with it.

mvelbaum··on Google's Culture of Fear
Are you talking about George Soros here?

It's always astonishing to see ignorance and delusion so fully and grotesquely consummated in the mind of a person.

mvelbaum··on Google's Culture of Fear
You are part of the problem then.
mvelbaum··on Ask HN: How can I learn about performance optimization?
Denis Bakhvalov has some great resources for this:

1. His free course: https://products.easyperf.net/perf-ninja

2. His free book: https://book.easyperf.net/perf_book (the 2nd edition is being worked on right now and there's a draft on github: https://github.com/dendibakh/perf-book)

mvelbaum··on Orbit: C/C++ Performance Profiler
Can anyone suggest a good non-sampling profiler for low latency apps? The only one I can think of is https://github.com/morganstanley/Xpedite but it's not even clear that it is being maintained anymore.
mvelbaum··on LLaVA-1.6: Improved reasoning, OCR, and world knowledge
Is there an OSS model that can do OCR on the level of Google Cloud Vision or Amazon Textract?
mvelbaum··on Building a Password Cracker in 2024
thanks! :)
mvelbaum··on Building a Password Cracker in 2024
This is what I get:

  20 0 obj
  <<
      /R 4
      /O (...)
      /U (...)
      /P -1548
      /Length 128
      /V 4
      /EncryptMetadata true
      /Filter /Standard
      /StmF /StdCF
      /StrF /StdCF
      /CF <<
      /StdCF <<
      /AuthEvent /DocOpen
      /CFM /AESV2
  >>>>>>
  endobj
I tried a bunch of tools, including https://www.elcomsoft.com/apdfpr.html?src=prog_apdfprp to get it to quickly remove the password, but nothing worked :/
mvelbaum··on Building a Password Cracker in 2024
I tried the free tools already -- none seemed to work :(
mvelbaum··on Building a Password Cracker in 2024
Hmm, I actually have an old password protected PDF (pass is prolly around ~10 chars, letters+digits) whose password I forgot.

Are there legit services offering brute-force cracking? How long would it take, and how much it would it cost?

mvelbaum··on Show HN: Citadel – a Calibre-compatible eBook management app
> Custom Columns (if thats what you mean!) are on the todo list though — I have a couple in my library, one for tracking Read state and another for tracking word count.

Yeah, I have a bunch of them, one is "Read Status" (read, reading, to-read), another is "Recommended By" to track books recommended by various people, and the last one is "Folders" which I use to arrange books in a folder-like hierarachy.

For example, you could have a "Finance" folder, and then "Finance.Investing", "Finance.Personal Finance", "Finance.Trading" subfolders.

The calibre content server does support searching and viewing these columns, and in the desktop app you see the tree on the left pane which you can quickly browse.

To search a specific "folder" you'd use something like: #folder:"=Finance.Personal Finance" title:"happy money"

mvelbaum··on Show HN: Citadel – a Calibre-compatible eBook management app
Does this support custom metadata? For example I have a custom field I call "Folders" to hierarchically label/organize my eBooks. Would be nice to be able to browse through that or search under a specific label/folder.
mvelbaum··on Show HN: Marimo – an open-source reactive notebook for Python
Does this allow to run a long running task in the background so that a user can close & reopen the tab and continue seeing all the output that has been produced thus far?

This is currently being worked on in Jupyter: https://github.com/jupyterlab/jupyterlab/pull/15448

mvelbaum··on DIY Book Scanner
I used to use a flatbed scanner back in my undergrad, was quite a painful experience :).

Nowadays I just use https://1dollarscan.com. Turns out to be rather expensive, but still beats all that manual work.

mvelbaum··on Dogbolt Decompiler Explorer
Thanks again! :)
mvelbaum··on Dogbolt Decompiler Explorer
Very cool - thank you very much!

> My take is that ML can soundly defeat the "easy" and more static obfuscation types (encodings, control flow flattening, splitting functions). It's low hanging fruit, and it's what I worked on most, but adoption is slow.

If I wanted to implement my own toy HexRays-like decompiler using a few of these techniques to decompile x86-64 binaries is there any high quality up-to-date paper/resource you would recommend?

Or do you think that "A Generic Approach to Automatic Deobfuscation of Executable Code" paper is a good enough start?

Also, what do you think about https://tigress.wtf/ ?

mvelbaum··on Dogbolt Decompiler Explorer
Has there been any good progress in deobfuscating/decompiling machine code using Machine Learning techniques?
mvelbaum··on KDE Plasma 6.0 Is Enabling Wayland by Default
KDE is pretty feature-rich, but it is just ugly. Look at the poor use of spacing/margins, the ugly black & white icons, the ugly font, the square edges, and just the overall look & feel. It needs a major face-lift. I dislike the attempts to dumb down GNOME but KDE being ugly makes it really hard to switch to.

mvelbaum··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
Yeah, I'm just not gullible enough to be fooled by vague terms like "fairness" where whoever's in charge is going to decide what is fair and what isn't based on (most likely) some arbitrary worldview (which is most likely woke).
mvelbaum··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
No, people like him don't want certain queries to be available to anyone else.
mvelbaum··on China's Age of Malaise
> Chinese chatbots have struggled to compete with ChatGPT, because the Party imposed rules requiring them to uphold “socialist core values.” (If you ask ernieBot, a Chinese version of ChatGPT, whether Xi Jinping is pragmatic, it replies, “Try a different question.”)

Thank God we have nothing like that in the US... right? right???

mvelbaum··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
That executive order is an affront to intelligence and must be cancelled ASAP by the next president who will hopefully not be a Democrat.
mvelbaum··on Grok is an AI modeled after the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
By "debias" you obviously mean "bias in the direction of my particular worldview".
mvelbaum··on Ben Fry resigns from the Processing Foundation
Sounds like commie gobbledygook to me.
mvelbaum··on Mistral releases ‘unmoderated’ chatbot via torrent
Instead of "unmoderated", can we call this "uncensored"? The authoritarians will always pick euphemisms to hide their true intentions.

mvelbaum··on Security analysis of the Dominion ImageCast X
> Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has been aware of our findings for nearly two years, but—astonishingly—he recently announced that the state will not install Dominion’s security update until after the 2024 Presidential election, giving would-be adversaries another 18 months to develop and execute attacks that exploit the known-vulnerable machines.

This is extremely disturbing. Why is this not a scandal?
