muwtyhg··on Mythos Finds a Curl Vulnerability

With those 50 million subscribers, how much do they pay and how much do they cost? That is the only relevant piece of information when discussing the investment and returns of OpenAI.

muwtyhg··on Scouting's Real Crisis Is Not Marketing. It Is Decades of Neglect.
> You don't have to be Mormon or even religious to think that there's value in having a youth program that is specifically male-only, such that you'd be highly motivated to abandon a youth program if it stopped being male-only.

Are you going to expand on this at all? What is the value in Scouts being male-only?

I don't think anything that Walensky said was incorrect. She just said that their studies thus far showed very low Covid infection rates and very low rates of virus detection in vaccinated people. In what way was what she said incorrect? Her starting the quote with "Our data from the CDC today suggests" indicates she is only commenting on what the data they have shows, and not making any promises or 100% guaranteed statements.

Then, someone under the same organization, a spokesperson whose job it is to speak about these things, further clarified that the statement was broad, but they never said it was incorrect or was not supported by the study cited by Walensky. This seems to be things working as intended, and anti-vaxx people then attempted to misconstrue this quote as a promise or guarantee.

muwtyhg··on McDonald's is a premium product now (2024)
> It seems like McDonald's may now allow more pricing variation between franchise locations than they did in the past

They definitely do. I order from 3 different McDonalds in my area depending on where I am when ordering, and all 3 have different prices for their items (especially the value menu). These places can literally be 10 minutes from each other, with one charging $0.50 more for a McDouble.

muwtyhg··on Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth
Literally two paragraphs before your quoted text:

> Dr. Walensky spoke broadly ... “It’s possible that some people who are fully vaccinated could get COVID-19. The evidence isn’t clear whether they can spread the virus to others.”

Seems like they arn't saying you cannot get it, but that you are LESS LIKELY to spread it. Which, if Covid was spread via coughing/sneezing, and the vaccine reduces those symptoms, would be a logical next step. She also hedged multiple times, stating that this is just what the initial data is saying, and not a full-throated promise.

muwtyhg··on AI didn't delete your database, you did
> Still I think a band saw has very little warning on it and by it's design there is very little anyone can do about me cutting off my finger

Most saws have a blade guard of some sort to prevent the blade from being over-exposed. They are also COVERED in warning signs and symbols, as well as having other safety features like emergency stop buttons/pedals.

There has definitely been a maximal amount of effort taken to warn and keep people safe from saws. LLMs, conversely, have been shoved into everything with very little forethought or testing to make sure they are safe and perform the task correctly.

muwtyhg··on HERMES.md in commit messages causes requests to route to extra usage billing
You realize the thread you are commenting on is not about scaling or downtime, but about a billing bug that Anthropic refused to fix until it become a Streisand effect?

If you're happy to continue paying a company that has demonstrated it will steal your money, admit it, and refuse to return it, more power to you. The AI industry is moving fast enough that there will be plenty of players to pick up customers who don't want to be robbed.

I know this is just an example but my eyes kind of bugged out thinking about paying $1 every time I want to estimate the calories in my sandwich.
muwtyhg··on He asked AI to count carbs 27000 times. It couldn't give the same answer twice
And furthermore, once the person has "determined" how many calories the sandwich contains, they are likely to give you the same answer next time you ask instead of randomly changing their minds.

Do you run into issues with apps not supporting it? Things like banking or auth? That is the main complaint I see for alternative phone OSes, and I don't know if that has gotten any better.

muwtyhg··on Healthcare is driving America's economy
> there's the added bonus of turning you down for life-saving care

Can insurance companies not already do this?

muwtyhg··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
You said:

> The difference is, like Jesus taught, religious people will care for others expecting nothing in return (reward is from God)

But you admit that's not true. They expect something in return from God. I don't understand why this distinction even matters if the only thing that makes the reward worth it is just how 'immeasurably desirable' it is.

If atheists could get some similar reward (maybe their consciousness uploaded to a "heaven" simulation by a kindness-promoting nonprofit that feels effectively endless) depending on how kind they were to others during their lives, would they then be rational to be kind? Or would it still be chasing some sort of "reward" for their kindness?

Why does the reward originating from God matter?

muwtyhg··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
> Which would make someone less sad by default, no?

Ignorance is bliss. Is ignorance therefore good?

muwtyhg··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
> But the difference is that the expected reward comes from God

Is there an effective difference outside of that person's own mind? It's still a reward-based system where people only do Good because there is some reward waiting for them, be it from other people or a God.

muwtyhg··on If America's so rich, how'd it get so sad?
So your desire to believe in a God must also be a calculation you made selfishly. You do expect "something" in return for your religious devotion, and it seems to be based around your desire to not go to Hell, not some greater moral duty to your fellow man or a desire to do Good for the sake of it.

Otherwise, why does Religion need a punishment like Hell at all?

muwtyhg··on Claude Code to be removed from Anthropic's Pro plan?
I don't think anyone is questioning the idea of A/B testing in general, but we are confused how it works in practice when you are advertising a service. Can you give me an example of this happening elsewhere? Or are you saying it's so normalized that there would be no record or news articles about it, and this only is newsworthy because "AI"?

I have never heard of a company intentionally advertising less features to only some of their customers to see if they'll still bite.

And we still have no actual confirmation that Claude is giving people who fall into that 2% of testers the full service, as opposed to the advertised one.

muwtyhg··on Iran War Cost Tracker
Is every death at the hands of Israel against someone who is terrorist or has "terrorist-aligned ideologies"? If not, is every unjustified death of a civilian just "one IDF soldier doing something bad"?

You are handwaving away any sort of accountability from Israel. It is impossible, given your framing, for Israel to ever do anything wrong.

How do you go from a campaign motto of "No new wars" to "War with Iran" and still maintain it was a central campaign plank of the Trump Admin?
muwtyhg··on The United States and Israel have launched a major attack on Iran
> We can’t have elections in the middle of a major war.

Yes we can? Is there any provision in the US Constitution that allows delay of election because of war? We have had elections during most of our recent wars (Iraq, Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan).

Trump could definitely try. Or pull an emergency card out of his ass. But it doesn't mean there is any provision for cancelling elections because of this 'war' with Iran (which they aren't even calling a war, but a "special combat operation" to get around congress having the war powers)
