mustntmumble··on Google Announces .new Domain Availability
I'm wondering how that would work for an online shop. Lets say I went to amazon.new - what should I expect to see?

Maybe a new empty shopping cart?

Or a list of new products that have just been added to the store?

I think new products would be most intuitive for a shop.new domain...

mustntmumble··on Ask HN: Is .io domain unstable?
Check out this list as a starting point: https://www.namecheap.com/domains/new-tlds/explore/
mustntmumble··on Rabbit Holes: The Secret to Technical Expertise
As one who simply tinkers with Linux but is not a guru, I found this article quite inspiring! I had no idea just how deep that sort of rabbit hole can go. I feel inspired to try to delve behind the scenes for myself... The author has made my day :-)
mustntmumble··on Streaming Video Will Soon Look Like the Bad Old Days of TV
I've been using Plex for a good 3 or 4 years now, and have upgraded through a good half dozen or so version upgrades. What disappointed me the most is that their support for subtitles has gotten progressively worse over time. I did all the tricks to try and make subtitles work, whether embedded or not, but in the end I found it easier just to navigate to the folder on my NAS and open the .mkv in VLC, which recognises embedded subtitles no problem!
mustntmumble··on Cosmic Ray Update: New Results from the Moon
As a layperson, I found this article about protecting spaceships from cosmic rays, from many years ago, to be very informative. I had seen the interview with Eugene Parker from the BBC "The Planets" not long before finding this article, so I was quite excited to find something written by him!

mustntmumble··on Google Sheets Formula Clock
Also agreed! I now look at the google sparkline function with new regard and wonderment...
mustntmumble··on A Raspberry Pi VAX Cluster (2012)
I find that odd that the VAXStation VLC's were being dumped because of Y2K. VMS has a 64-bit datetime data structure. The C run-time library still had the Year2038 time problem though...
mustntmumble··on Ask HN: Best book for understanding hardware-software interface
That sounds like a simple question but the answer is very complex. I recommend you look at old technology that was more simple and easy to understand, and then start moving forward. Look at the S100 bus and how simple 8 bit microprocessors such as the Z80 and 6502 did IO.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S-100_bus

https://z80journal.wordpress.com/2015/10/07/z80-io-space/

Then with x86 PC age, look at the ISA bus first https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industry_Standard_Architecture

and later on, the PCI bus (should I even mention Microchannel?) : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conventional_PCI

Another direction for computer IO might be to learn about the Raspberry Pi GPIO interface: https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/raspberry-gpio/all

mustntmumble··on Form a New Zealand company for USD$110 with no yearly fees
Where on that page does it say "no yearly fees"? From my own experience, NZ companies are required to file an annual return to the NZ Companies Office, which incurs a fee of about $36 plus GST (sales tax).
mustntmumble··on New Zealand to ban foreigners from buying existing houses
Title is too broad.

"We have agreed on banning the purchase of existing homes by foreign buyers," said Ms Ardern

My point is that non-residents will still be able to build new houses. This policy brings New Zealand in line with Australia which already has a similar policy.

mustntmumble··on The Minimalists want you to be happy with less
They still have to pay rent and buy food...
mustntmumble··on Why Germany’s happy, successful: Its values are the opposite of Silicon Valley’s
Perhaps he/she is sick of hurricanes, that will only become more frequent and more powerful as the ocean continues to warm up...
mustntmumble··on Oticon Opn 1 Reviewed by a Software Engineer
Coincidentally, I also own a pair of the Oticon Opn 1, and I pretty much agree with the blog piece. My biggest gripe is how short the battery life is when on bluetooth. And my 2nd biggest gripe is that there is no way to 'lock' the Opn into Loop mode when wearing headphones. If the headphones move a bit, the Opn no longer detects the magnetic coil and disengages loop mode. I would like to be able to use the iPhone app to lock them into loop mode until I manually change the mode...

Oh, and yeah, I ALWAYS take my hearing aids out when I am at the barber! The idea of leaving them in... shudder!!

mustntmumble··on Apple Paid $0 in Taxes to New Zealand, Despite Sales of $4.2B
Apple doesn't pay the GST on the sales, that is paid for by the consumers. (Yes I know that is a gross simplification but that is the general idea of GST - it is a consumption tax).
mustntmumble··on Could a £400bn plan to refreeze the Arctic before the ice melts really work?
Because ice floats to the top of the water, and insulates the water remaining down below beneath the ice.
mustntmumble··on Ask HN: Any open-source project in need of a Technical Writer?
I hope you don't mind me hitching a ride on this question, but what is a 'technical writer'? Can someone with excellent composition, grammar, spelling, and proof-reading skills become a 'technical writer' or does the writer need to have specific technical domain knowledge?
mustntmumble··on Ask HN: What is the best online resource to learn advanced SQL?
If I could ask something related to this question - what is the best way to grok the OVER clause, such as RANK() OVER? I'm having a bit of difficulty trying to really understand how it works and how to use it effectively.
