mulcahey··on Co-founder of Neuralink leaves the company
IMO silent majority has pretty balanced view of him and just doesn’t care to participate in a holy war praising or hating on the guy. Social media and regular media bias towards the polar opinions, as with anything else.

History respects Edison, Jobs, Tesla, Carnegie, Rockefeller, Hughes for what the accomplished while acknowledging their individual flaws. I think Musk will be remember similarly. Depending how successful his ventures are over the coming century he might even be remembered more than any of them.

mulcahey··on Stars that race through space at nearly the speed of light
Could we use stars like this as intergalactic vehicles!?

If (BIG if) we some how figure out how to launch a mass the size of a star or planet into an orbit around two galaxies. You could then launch your starship into its orbit around the apogee, ride the mass to the next galaxy, and de-orbit burn around perigee! In this way the orbit would practically be a store of energy as well.

mulcahey··on Why Jira Sucks
It has a markup language that accomplishes the same thing effectively but has a completely different syntax. This is super annoying when you are bouncing between pull requests in Atlassian Bitbucket and JIRA tickets. I have tried to create a heading with # only to end up with an <ol> at least a hundred times.

I imagine this is because JIRA (2002) predates Markdown (2004), or at least its mainstream popularity when GitHub adopted it.

mulcahey··on Startup Stock Options – Why A Good Deal Has Gone Bad (2019)
I think you pay taxes when you exercise if they are NSO. If they are ISO you pay on sale of the shares you acquired & they’re subject to AMT.
mulcahey··on Tesla is a bubble that will slowly deflate
Two thoughts on why Tesla's ceiling should not be considered simply a reasonable marketshare of the global car market.

(1) I think you could have constructed a similar argument in ~2010 regarding the iPhone. Apple indeed did not capture a dominant market share by volume, but take the lion's share of the profits today -- converting many mid-level consumers to loyal customers of luxury goods.[1] Second to that, they are much more vertically integrated than the competition where the software, the hardware, and media are generally made by different companies. This allows them to extract more revenue from each customer. In my opinion Tesla's vehicles are well positioned to be the iPhone of cars where they widely expand the size of their addressable market.

(2) Elon has said a few times that Tesla is best though of as a collection of a about a dozen different startups as opposed to simply a new entry into the traditional auto market.[2] These "startups" would include solar, insurance, self driving, battery tech, utility scale energy storage, dealership/service network, etc.

mulcahey··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
Here is an example thread of many users experiencing resource utilization issues with various root causes:

https://github.com/docker/for-mac/issues/3499

Some root causes have been addressed. If they are significantly changing the architecture with the Apple Silicon rollout, I'm very much looking forward to see if that improves things!

mulcahey··on Tech Preview of Docker Desktop for M1
Perhaps a dumb question but I'm curious why people don't use a VPS or a cloud linux machine more for Docker/K8s development instead of running Docker locally on a Mac.

In my experience Docker Desktop has been such a resource hog, and Apple's hypervisor implementation pretty poor. I much prefer to have all that heavy lifting isolated away from my development machine to keep it responsive and cool.

mulcahey··on Apple TV Was Making a Show About Gawker. Then Tim Cook Found Out
I like that idea for a documentary, but think it'd perhaps come off as arrogant -- like someone producing a dramatic biopic about themselves.
mulcahey··on Oracle Moving HQ to Austin
SpaceX and Tesla cannot move with the ease of software companies due to the facilities and equipment needed to build, test (and in SpaceX's case, launch & land) their vehicles.

mulcahey··on Starship – SN8 – High-Altitude Flight Test
More info about Starship

https://www.spacex.com/vehicles/starship/

> As early as Wednesday, December 9, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude suborbital flight test of Starship serial number 8 (SN8) from our site in Cameron County, Texas. The schedule is dynamic and likely to change, as is the case with all development testing.

> This suborbital flight is designed to test a number of objectives, from how the vehicle’s three Raptor engines perform to the overall aerodynamic entry capabilities of the vehicle (including its body flaps) to how the vehicle manages propellant transition. SN8 will also attempt to perform a landing flip maneuver, which would be a first for a vehicle of this size.

> With a test such as this, success is not measured by completion of specific objectives but rather how much we can learn, which will inform and improve the probability of success in the future as SpaceX rapidly advances development of Starship.

> This past year alone, SpaceX has completed two low-altitude flight tests with Starship SN5 and SN6 and accumulated over 16,000 seconds of run time during 330 ground engine starts, including multiple Starship static fires and four flight tests of the reusable methalox full-flow staged combustion Raptor engine. Additionally, with production accelerating and fidelity increasing, SpaceX has built 10 Starship prototypes. SN9 is almost ready to move to the pad, which now has two active stands for rapid development testing.

> SN8’s flight test is an exciting next step in the development of a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. As we venture into new territory, we continue to appreciate all of the support and encouragement we have received.

> There will be a live feed of the flight test available here that will start a few minutes prior to liftoff. Given the uncertainty of the schedule, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward our first high-altitude flight test of Starship!

mulcahey··on Why has college gotten so expensive in the last 30 years? A blank check in 1993
Perhaps part of the reason those professionals are more expensive is that their degree programs saddle them with debt!

It’d be somewhat of a feedback loop

mulcahey··on Changes to SameSite Cookie Behavior – A Call to Action for Web Developers
Perhaps the type of login flow they’re getting to is that of an OIDC form_post response method? An auto-posting form is returned from the identity provider, which is then submitted to the relying party.

https://openid.net/specs/oauth-v2-form-post-response-mode-1_...

At least in .NET Core I observe a cookie for the OIDC nonce (.AspNetCore.OpenIdConnect.Nonce - defends against replay attacks) and a correlation cookie (.AspNetCore.OpenIdConnect.Correlation - tracks session through the redirect handshake). Both of these are created during the login redirect sequence and not intended to live beyond it.

The correlation cookie is set to SameSite=None here

https://github.com/dotnet/aspnetcore/blob/master/src/Securit...

The nonce cookie is set to SameSite=None here

https://github.com/dotnet/aspnetcore/blob/master/src/Securit...

I’m not familiar with many other auth flows outside of OIDC/OAuth2 but I wouldn’t be surprised if other SSO-like flows have similar mechanisms
