muhammadusman··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
I have been blogging at https://blog.usmanity.com for almost 6 years, but I have attempted to keep a blog for almost 10 years.

My blog is a lot of personal updates, technical things I'm learning/wanting to teach, and updates on my projects.

It helps me realize that even one post a month is enough to keep track of something.

My blog isn't very popular mainly b/c I don't market it anywhere, it's mostly used to reference things I've done in the past and quickly find information.

Last year, I started working on a project called BoardSearch (https://boardsearch.io) and right around that time my interest in mechanical keyboards was at a peak so it helped me share thoughts about building the website and also about keyboards I was interested in. This led to getting a bunch of organic search visits and now I'm doing 500-1000 views without any new content about keyboards most of the time.

Does this include an integration with Matter or Thread?
muhammadusman··on Tell HN: Do not store any funds in PayPal or use them for anything critical
I've learned from HN posts over the last 10 years that Paypal and Ebay are two of the worst places to do any kind of business, let alone hold any money there.

how does this compare to Typesense? I'd like to see which one uses fewer resources for similar performance

I also paid for it, my first font I paid for just for aesthetics and personal enjoyment. I don't regret it. I use it anywhere and everywhere I can!

muhammadusman··on Bun v0.5
As is with all things in the JS world, I usually ignore new things until they have some traction.

Is Bun ready to be used for production projects?

I'm a huge fan of using PlanetScale, I've been using it for a few projects recently and can't wait to try out the "Boost" feature when it becomes available. I think it will reduce one more thing from my stack (caching/redis)!

The developer experience with PlanetScale has been my favorite so far, I use it with a few Next.js apps and the "scaling" part has been the easiest as I haven't had to think about a burst of traffic b/c PlanetScale handles it without me lifting a finger.

muhammadusman··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
I've been reading HN almost daily for almost a decade now. I found it through a friend who has taught me a lot about programming, the internet, and nerdy things in general. When I discovered HN, it felt like I had a whole community of people similar to my friend who introduced me to it.
muhammadusman··on Ask HN: What weird technical scene are you fond/part of?
Ok maybe not too weird but I've been a keyboard enthusiast for almost a decade now and earlier this year I started on a quest to collect as many keyboards in one place as possible to make it easier for newcomers to the hobby to easily find a keyboard (very much in progress still but making steady progress as a hobby project). I created a website called BoardSearch (https://boardsearch.io).

So far, I've learned a lot about just how varying keyboarding building/collecting can be, and this makes building the data models for what a keyboard is/can include pretty complex. Some people go deep into the hobby building a keyboard by soldering the switches and others a little higher level like putting together keycaps and switches on a hotswap PCB. It's definitely a hobby that you can waste/spend a lot of money on but keyboards are fun!

muhammadusman··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
I’m currently unable to sleep and I’m on my phone, so I can’t code and I’m thinking about how to implement an easy to use audio player on my site [1]. I have been slowly making progress on it as a side project and it has been a fun learning experience. I’m also working on trying to get a “full stack” app without a server to maintain.

muhammadusman··on Show HN: I made a modern web UI for Hacker News
Out of all the HN extensions/websites I've used, this one has become my favorite. I really like the customizations available and also, it really does feel "modern" in that some things just feel easier to do with this tool.

Yup, this has been very helpful. Coming back to 20+ messages where 50-75% of them are reactions was annoying to get alerts for.

Turqoise health kinda does this now, not as robust yet but I have been using it to check out prices. Hopefully, your use case becomes a reality soon.
muhammadusman··on DuckDuckGo email protection beta now open
You can also use a custom domain (and/or anything else Fastmail lets you choose), this way you can put all the randomly generated emails coming to you in a single folder (as a rule).
muhammadusman··on Show HN: Quick Rewire – I made web tool to rewire your brain
Pretty amazing how quickly my brain just started thinking of the cursor going in the opposite direction. By the 5-7th trial, my hand and brain were pretty in sync. Then going back to the normal movement I was 0.41 seconds slower.

muhammadusman··on I spent a year designing a low profile, minimal mechanical keyboard
Great job! This along with the WorkLouder boards really excites me in pushing forward in the mech keyboard scene. We have a ton of makers who are replicating stuff to make it cheaper but these projects are what will push the envelope on what is possible for keyboards.
muhammadusman··on 200TB SSDs could come soon thanks to Micron's new chip
I'm curious, do you not buy spinning disks due to the risk of failure?
muhammadusman··on Ask HN: Is having a personal blog/brand worth it for you?
I have had a blog for many years now but I rarely treat it as a way to market myself or gain anything from it except the fact that I can go back and look at something I was working on.

At some point, I started writing more about keyboards, nothing crazy, just some I was interested in or when I built my own keyboard and I decided to track all the expenses related to it. It also helped me quickly go back to it and share the build process with friends whenever they asked about it.

My blog: https://blog.usmanity.com

The biggest struggle for me has been to write consistently, I will have a few days in a row when I write and then I go silent. Looking for any input/feedback on how people maintain cadence on writing.
