mudlus··on Ask HN: How does onlyfans.com work around the “no porn” Stripe rule?
This thread is a aompelling argument for Bitcoin/LN as an intermediary--just saying. It's getting easier every day.

Bisq for exchange will get easier over the next 5 years or so, too.

mudlus··on Text-Only Social Network
I wish there was just a protocol to do what Twitter does. Oh wait: https://activitypub.rocks/
mudlus··on Discount chains are thriving, but what do they do to poor communities?
The problem is disparity, a symptom is dollar stores, the cause is greed, classism, and racism. The cure? Democratic socialism and separating money and state.
mudlus··on Blackballed by PayPal, Sci-Hub switches to Bitcoin
Some things that are good for Russia, or terrorists, are good for everyone.

One of those is free and open scientific research.

Bitcoin was designed for just this kind of purpose.

mudlus··on Video Games Are the Future of Education
Even if it was, it's not the future of learning.

But, yeah, I could see China using video games in re-education camps, sure.

mudlus··on The American Press Is Destroying Itself
This wouldn't be a problem if Section 230 was repealed

mudlus··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
Are we are going to have to wait for a generation to die and for millions of lives to be lost (indirectly, say, through a demagogue's botched response to a pandemic needlessly leading to the infection of millions) before the average person is comfortable using a protocol (say, ActivityPub and RSS) instead of these parasitic for-profit platforms?

As long as the search for truth is burdened with advertising on platforms democracy and freedom are doomed.

If you don't see these things are linked, then you're part of the problem.

mudlus··on $14M in ETH stolen from Upbit were laundered in May through well-known exchanges
Exactly, now you see. The exchanges are also the enemy. Bisq is a start at trying to make something like Local Bitcoins WITHOUT a central authority. Coins that aren't centralized in a single location can't be stolen in the first place. Hence "Not your keys not your coins". People should take control of your coins, but that's difficult in practice. In this regard, the Bitcoin doesn't actually need new users--it just needs the users in the ecosystem that understand this. However, every halving there is a bull cycle that leads to the same ways that people lose money (exchange insolvency, loss of money on shitcoin speculation, exchange hacks). But, exchanges, who do all of the advertising in the space, don't want you to even think about that. At best, they think they actually have control and drink their own kool-aide.
mudlus··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
Actually the transaction fees accounted for over 12% of the block reward for block 630000

Also, it may help to think about it this way: you don't mine the subsidy, you mine the transactions and reap the transaction fees. The subsidy, which halves ever 210000 blocks, is just that, a subsidy.

Imagine if more subsidies (like the US subsidy for corn that still exists since the first great depression) had been hard coded to expire?

It's been a slippery slope. Now the FED has to directly purchase ETFs to "rescue the market" from itself: https://twitter.com/boes_/status/1260029253145378818?s=20

mudlus··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
We mine Bitcoin for the same reason we mine gold, it's extremely difficult/expensive to make gold. Gold has verifiablity at a molecular level. Bitcoin is verifiable at a level of entropy.
mudlus··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
Bitcoin now has a lower inflation rate than gold. It is likely that the main seller of Bitcoin from here on out will no longer be miners but exchanges.
mudlus··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
Look at the stock market right now, does that seem efficient? Sometimes volatility is necessary.

"Imagine if a publicly traded company announced that in 1 years time, they would buy back half of their outstanding shares (not a great analogy but its the best I can think of). What would happen to the stock price?"

The irony is that a bunch of companies are and did do EXACTLY this with trillions of dollars designed to bail out the economy.

mudlus··on Bitcoin Halving Just Occured
The irony of talking about auditing in fiat as stock prices soar despite 20 million unemployed. Enjoy exponential exacerbation of income disparity so you can keep your BigMac at a "stable" price. NOTHING is valued correctly, RN. Bitcoin is the metric system for money.
mudlus··on The Days of Bitcoin Mining Are Nearly over (2019)
It also assumes there is no incentive/demand for "Layer 2" solutions, like Liquid, Lightning Network, Bisq. There's lots of room for experimentation, but I'm very opposed to "big blocks" (as the above poster has mentioned). If you'd like to hear why, and in fact should maybe be even smaller, I suggest this brief explanation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqNEQS80-h4
mudlus··on Turning Off Autoplaying Previews
I miss getting DVDs/whatever in the mail.
mudlus··on Ask HN: 2020 goals and resolutions?
-Get better at Ruby and Ruby on Rails. -Make parts of my private work repositories public, open source. -Continue to build and grow and have fun programming (that means being reckless and breaking stuff). -Have fun with my kid and spouse.
mudlus··on The Next 50 Years of Databases (2015)
Agreed, this sounds like the pontificating of someone who has not studied language and culture. As soon as the machine can understand any "natural language" say to it, the language is dead. Before you teach your database to interpret upper class out of sight "White" English, try teaching it "Ebonics."

I guess my point is, there's nothing "natural" about language.

mudlus··on Launch HN: Sparkswap (YC S18) – Buy Bitcoin Instantly over the Lightning Network
This company will mess this up at some point (user data breach, or lost funds). Just wait until Bisq integrates with lightning at some point. Be patient, wait for, and if you can, contribute to, the open source version.
mudlus··on How we will know when a recession is coming?
Massive (last I checked 13 trillion and rising) negative yields government bonds market all with. Lowering interest rates twice already, heading to another one next week (rumor). Instead of bailing out the homeowners in 2008, they bailed out the banks. "Too big to fail." Think about this stuff people. Nothing has changed, nothing ever changes, Governments are incentivized by the market to steal money from the working class to protect the stability of an economy. It's simple: SLOWLY separate money and state and we don't have to worry about manipulation of the money supply to "protect us." Buy Bitcoin.
mudlus··on 94k Bitcoin (1B USD) transferred from unknown wallet to unknown wallet
Looks like @HuobiGlobal UTXO consolidation (not an individual user). https://twitter.com/thetokenanalyst/status/11699297386071244...
mudlus··on Vinyl set to outsell CDs for first time since 1986
Makes perfect since, in the virtual age collectables will have more value than the thing anyone can access. Reminds me of an article I can't find about the lack of middle road anymore for many goods, you either care a lot or don't care at all about what you're getting. McDonalds vs Wagyu. Where's the bespoke Coke? (actually my wife enjoys elderflower syrup in her soda water)
mudlus··on Facebook Dating
All the world is a stage, FB wants to be that stage.
mudlus··on MacBook Pro Keyboard Drives Me Crazy
I feel like I've been seeing this trend as well. I've got an DELL XPS15 and I love it (4-5 years old now)ーgreat keyboard.

But, for anything that needs good GPU performance, they still hold the upper hand in hardware-software working in tandem, it's hard to get the same performance out of anything else.
