mudetroit··on Nobody Understands REST or HTTP
I want to know what part of the Java web world you are talking about exactly?

I just question the concept that REST is in anyway considered to be obsolete within the Java web world. Spring-MVC focuses more and more around this technology, and is also the delivery point for REST web services from spring; Struts 2 has slowly moved more towards RESTfulness; and additionally frameworks like Play have come around.

mudetroit··on Startup vs. Lifestyle Business (A Short Comparison from a Guy Who's Done Both)
What does "technical" or "non-technical" have to do with his point? I am on the technical side of it, and have come to the conclusion that when I do start my own business it will be geared at having the life I want the whole time, not at some point off in the future. That is an entirely reasonable position to take.
mudetroit··on Website pulled on US church that wants to burn Korans [by Rackspace]
And it is sentiments like this that simply confuse the issue. No one, including Rackspace, is denying them their right to free speech. The fact of the matter is that, when you choose to use your right to free speech in a manner that others find to be blatantly offensive; you open yourself up to repercussions from other private individuals and companies.

Do not confuse having a right to express your views in an open manner to mean that you do so without being held accountable for those views. What it means is that others cannot stop you from expressing those views, with rare exceptions. It in no way means that others can choose not to do business with you.

mudetroit··on A Case Study of “Designed By Developers:” Stack Overflow
Jeff has actually spoken about this a few times. The ghost sites do have a cost beyond just resources. The stack exchange format only really works when you get a certain critical mass of people to ask questions. They have found if you get people together and people ask questions then people will come to answer them. The trick is getting enough people together to start asking questions.

When you have an empty site and someone sees the last question was weeks or months ago they just browse away. Helping getting the community over that initial hurdle is important.

mudetroit··on The Real Story: First Wave at Omaha Beach (1960)
I would additionally add that, while he spent a while talking about one of the positive outcomes for a while at the end, even the tone of that section really points out the utter luck that was involved in a lot of the successes.

It was a horrific day, but a pivotal one for at least the next 40 or so years of history. Had the Allied forces not been able to break into Normandy the outcome of the war was no certain thing, even with the success in Italy.

mudetroit··on Continuous Deployment at IMVU: Doing the impossible fifty times a day.
This works fine if you are tackling a problem that can be sufficiently addressed by 4 developers. Depending on the size and scale of the problem you are trying to suggest and the time line required for delivery you may need a larger team.

When you begin to take that into account you realize you have to find ways for the larger team to work together and still produce a quality product. Hence the techniques being used by the author and other companies out there trying to address similar problems.

mudetroit··on Open-plan offices are making workers sick
I think it has a lot to do with corporate climate, more than the studies are capturing. I have worked in small offices, cubeland, and open office plans. I have been in open office plans where communication was non-existent, and in small offices where we communicated well.

My current place is a very open floorplan, but it just works. We all know that one of the problems we have is that we spread around disease more than we would like. But the thing is we are all extremely happy with the format, and with the benefits we get out of it. There have been offers made in the past to change it, and the team decided to turn it down.

I think breaking it down to floorplan alone doesn't address the issue fully.

mudetroit··on Was whole economy a Ponzi scheme?
The more fundamental problem was the philosophical shift from holding stock being a means to collect a dividend to expecting the short term ability to purchase stock and sell it for a profit.

If you sit and think about it logically, why does a stock that doesn't pay a dividend have any intrinsic value attached to it? Yet we have built an economic structure that says that it is possible for that piece of paper to gain value.
