mtnGoat··on Why So Many Bitcoin Mining Companies Are Pivoting to AI
Well they usually locate in industrial buildings which means rent per square foot can be under a dollar a month. And energy where some miners are at is 7 cents per kilowatt hour. So the things you are talking about might add $.25/hr we can go with $1.75. If you are renting this for $3.5 you are doubling your money. Any wise investor would take this action all day long. DCs full of non mission critical workloads that require low bandwidth aren’t hard to setup and run.

Source: I live in a town with dozens of industrial sized mining ops. We have the cheapest power in the country.

mtnGoat··on FBI Stats Show Crime Still Declining, Despite the Assertions of Alarmists and
Or people just aren’t reporting crime because at this point, in many places, it’s fruitless.

I know I don’t report crime anymore, got robbed in Seattle recently, didn’t bother calling it in.

mtnGoat··on BNSF ordered to pay $395M after years of trespassing on Swinomish land
The only way to that Sinclair refinery is to cross tribal land. This will probably shift those loads to the Phillips and BP refineries up in Ferndale.

Imagine a 3200 foot stretch of rail way costing you $400 million because you just couldn’t be bothered to live up to your end of a basic agreement.

mtnGoat··on A camera-less iPhone issued to my buddy that works at a nuclear plant
I didn’t know they made these models, a good friend works on DoD research and all of his laptops have had the cameras rendered useless with a Dremel.

I guess they have a valid excuse for not turning on cameras during zoom calls

mtnGoat··on Sam Altman is not on YC's board. So why claim to be its chair?
Please don’t say all… I for one have never done this.
mtnGoat··on Sam Altman is not on YC's board. So why claim to be its chair?
Yes I do in fact read those things, every VP or above that I know does too. A meeting covers high points that doesn’t mean you don’t have to do your homework.

Trust but verify.

mtnGoat··on Show HN: XDeck – An ad-blocking client app for macOS, like TweetDeck
If you are hiding ads, chances are high you are violating TOS.
mtnGoat··on Is Target selling its excess inventory on eBay and Poshmark?
Sometime started a fire in a backyard fire pit, IN my local target. Due to smoke damage, they donated almost the entire store inventory to the local goodwill, who in turn (based on my past experience volunteering there) probably threw 90% of it away.
mtnGoat··on Show HN: Pls Fix – Hire big tech employees to appeal account suspensions
Maybe the folks at these companies writing the corny AI that bans people for posting pictures of cups and flowers, are the same ones getting kickbacks for fixing the problem?

I’m sorry, I just can’t help but be cynical about this. These platforms have next to zero actual customer support, the AI inmate is running the asylum and the users suffer the most.

mtnGoat··on Show HN: Pls Fix – Hire big tech employees to appeal account suspensions
This seems too apply to healthcare and legal matters in most of the US as well.
mtnGoat··on Stripe increasing "instant payout" fees by 50%
Math doesn’t do “kinda”. If you are paying $100 for something, and then it is $150, that’s is a 50% increase and is an undeniable fact.
mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Video streaming is expensive yet YouTube "seems" to do it for free. How?
Also, can you show me any public pricing that is 100x cheaper than AWS? With same QOS! Or are you just throwing numbers around?
mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Video streaming is expensive yet YouTube "seems" to do it for free. How?
Agreed, I guess my point in my original comment is; yes, bandwidth is cheap but you aren’t going to compete at any scale hosting at OVH as was proposed. And you’ll need a lot more than cheap VMs too.
mtnGoat··on Statement from Scarlett Johansson on the OpenAI "Sky" voice
Oh wait Altman and team acting like they rule the world?!

If that box wasn’t in your bingo card I’m sorry, it’s basically the center/free box at this point.

mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Video streaming is expensive yet YouTube "seems" to do it for free. How?
So you can piggy back on the CDNs that do the same until you can afford to do so, with the same performance. This isn’t a privilege only given to those cloud providers, anyone with a checkbook and a pulse can do it.
mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Video streaming is expensive yet YouTube "seems" to do it for free. How?
But anyone doing things at great scale, isn’t going with OVH. You could use it as an origin I goes but you’d still need CDN for decent content delivery.
mtnGoat··on Psychedelics could treat some of the worst chronic pain in the world
Would you do research on something that could get you a prison sentence for researching it?

And that’s why the war on drugs is inhibiting the subject. Most facilities aren’t willing to go through the process to get permission.

mtnGoat··on I organized a 20-acre game of Capture the Flag
One time in about 8th grade we had a cap gun fight around a school around dusk. It didn’t end well when a person driving by saw flashes, heard bangs and kids yelling at each other. The local police showed up, sirens blazing and couldn’t figure out what was what, we ended up talking to them and things got sorted. We got a firm warning about how that could have ended poorly and to pick other activities to entertain ourselves.
mtnGoat··on Crypto brothers front-ran the front-runners
Interesting, I know this is possible on a few other blockchains as well. I was asked to write code to front run trades on one of them, but laughed and turned it down. Seemed like it would end up something like this article.
mtnGoat··on Utah Locals Are Getting Cheap 10 Gbps Fiber Thanks to Local Governments
The big telcos ignored us so we took it into our own hands. Had it been a bigger market I’m sure they would have lobbied our local ISP out of existence. They still do some questionable marketing around here.
mtnGoat··on Utah Locals Are Getting Cheap 10 Gbps Fiber Thanks to Local Governments
We’ve had symmetrical 1gb fiber owned and installed by our public utilities for almost two decades here in central Washington. Was $80 a month until a year or two ago, then it went down to $60.
mtnGoat··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
When you(and your customers) consume several hundred million dollars a year in services, you get access to a lot of things. These were not contractors, they were on product teams.
mtnGoat··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
Might still be enforceable at this level.
mtnGoat··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
My experience differs greatly, company I used to work for did NDA, alpha, beta projects with Google. I was always impressed at how little anyone knew, the fact that nothing was delivered on time, scope creep to the point of almost everything being delayed and most projects were not well thought out nor well architected. I warned one API update would break things if it went live, and it did. Why was the guy from another company the only one able to see that? I’m sure they were working hard at something but it wasn’t ever clear what.
mtnGoat··on The UK will block online porn from April. Here's what we know
Oh cool. Phishing and identity theft committed by minors to see nudity.

Maybe the UK should stop making themselves such a desirable place to headquarters a porn company. They’ve been a hub for shell companies to do strange things and circumvent taxes and regulations for many years. Ever notice how many xxx sites have UK addresses in the footer and 2257 pages? There’s a reason.

I don’t see this working very well, considering all you need is an ID card number, lots of places to get those, or just learn to phish your own.

mtnGoat··on Shutterstock Acquires Envato
I guess the decline of Envato shall continue.
mtnGoat··on Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira
As someone who works with a non profit who does this… don’t ask the city, they rarely care about thing’s like this. They will talk about support, but it’s talk. Most are too involved with crazy politics, campaigning, etc. Better to seek out other non-profits and community services to work with.
mtnGoat··on Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira
I made placeholder accounts on meta and other platforms and in my tagline I told people looking for me how to contact/find me.
mtnGoat··on Tracking Illicit Brazilian Beef from the Amazon to Your Burger
It’s really profitable to. I know a Greek fella that transports goats in bulk and has said it’s very profitable due to not many ships fitted to do it well.
mtnGoat··on Tracking Illicit Brazilian Beef from the Amazon to Your Burger
Not sure what leads to this believe, we have lots of untouched and well managed forests in the US. Sure we logged most of the eastern states but we also learned their importance before we completely destroyed them, hence wilderness and national park areas that can’t be logged.
