mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Former gifted children with hard lives, how did you turn out?
None actually, it’s cannabis related.

In fact the only time it’s been an issue was living in Texas, that state really embrasses discrimination against people with criminal records.

mtnGoat··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy
Interesting anecdotal response but it’s pretty obvious that top pay attracts top talent, basic market dynamics. Obviously grifters gravitate to where money is, that doesn’t mean all to talent at high pay is a grifter. Correlation != causation
mtnGoat··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy
That is correct
mtnGoat··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy
My accountant defined it this way… minimization is legal, avoidance is not.

Minimization is just taking advantage of the tax loopholes and strategies that are within bounds. Avoidance is lying or ignoring.

Yes it’s possible to minimize your taxes down to zero legally in many cases, but you’ll pay a good percentage of that savings to accounts and lawyers for managing that structure.

mtnGoat··on The Double Irish Dutch Sandwich: End of a Tax Evasion Strategy
Why? Talent goes where to best pay is, if you’re not paying taxes you can pay your agent more.
mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Former gifted children with hard lives, how did you turn out?
My score was 7.

I have ADHD, autism, and dyslexia, but luckily a >140 iq on a good day. I’ve suffered from depression at times, was incarcerated as a juvenile and an adult. Had a physical and mentally abusive father. I was also a convicted felon at 15/16 and again at 18 years old. Was an alcoholic before being legally allowed to drink. The list goes on.

That said life is great, I’ve exceeded all expectations my parents, family and educators had for me(the bar was low). I own my home, happily married and raising a daughter. I work at a FANG company and have a pretty decent net worth. Have traveled to almost 40 countries and feel like I add value to the world on most days. I even serve on the board of a non profit.

I would never say these things made my life any easier by any stretch but I learned to cope and it made me a “strong” person, in that I have confidence I can overcome just about anything and I don’t really fear much of anything that life can throw at me.

The one thing that’s crippling at times, being through all that with a photographic memory. Closing my eyes to go to sleep at night is hard… every single day.

mtnGoat··on An attempt to understand Peter Thiel
You aren’t calling out anything, rather just stating your opinion from an anonymous moniker, that gives it zero value to me. If you feel so strongly about it, why not do it from your normal account? Otherwise you’re adding less value then you claim the author is.

I’d rather hear disagreeing opinions from real people than those hiding behind anonymity, afraid to own their opinions publicly.

mtnGoat··on An attempt to understand Peter Thiel
At least he is willing to put his name on his opinions… unlike the one using the throwaway account to lodge his complaint.
mtnGoat··on Ask HN: Am I crazy or is Android development awful?
So… similar to setting up a dev environment at most FAANGs? ;)

mtnGoat··on AI paid for by Ads – the GPT-4o mini inflection point
Generating content on the fly is already happening, has been for a while. Word spinners used with a script that grabs the content of the first 5 Google results, Wikipedia, etc, has been around a long time and Google indexed the incomprehensible garbage it created.

Lot cost models just lowered the bar of entry.

mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
They are just generally gross, a lot of them aren’t cleaned(which can also smell), apparently they explode when heated, it’s hard to gauge the purity and weight of the gold until you remove the tooth. Lots of issues.

Just messy business.

mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
More and more graveyards are being fenced off and secured for this reason sadly. Plus generations ago some opted to be buried with their wedding rings and such. I know some smaller family ones in my area of central Washington have been robbed.
mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
But you also have the cost of man hours, marketing that you buy gold, finding a smelter that will take teeth, or do it yourself. That’s not all profit, plus you don’t know the gold weight until you remove it from the tooth. Which is risk. Plus it’s possibly a biohazard.

These people buy millions per day in gold, I’m sure if it was profitable they wouldn’t turn it away.

You can try it though, go to all the gold stores in your area and tell them you’ll buy all the teeth they bring in.

mtnGoat··on Craig Wright's claim of inventing Bitcoin may get him arrested for perjury
Hopefully they do press forward and he is arrested. Abuse of the legal system should be punished.
mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Unless you have a lot, you probably won’t get close to spot price. You might be able to find some local artisans that will pay better for small amounts then the big houses will. Gold in stamped form has the greatest value. Nuggets or mined gold, some buyers are afraid of and won’t pay until it’s melted.

Gold teeth are worth the absolute least.

mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Testing tools, and a lot of knowledge. Knowing what it is and where it’s made informs a lot. Once in a while you’ll get someone that is scamming and had stuff made with extra thick plating. Most pieces they will cut in half, grind a bit off, drill into it, etc. to do an acid test to determine gold content, then weigh it.

After a while she just kind of knew what to look out for. How people presented the goods, how they acted, etc.

The most shocking part to me, was how many 80s-90s celebs would bring in gold to sell. I guess times get rough.

mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
The margins mentioned are about in line with most “gold buyers” that have store fronts. 70% of spot is a decent starting point for “salvage” gold.

If it’s in any form but rounds or bars, it’ll need to be melted down which has a cost. So it can be made into a form that can be resold closer to spot value.

The margin are actually even better if you melt them down. it’s really hard to buy physical gold at spot, single ounces/grams go for a few points higher.

mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Yes that is regularly done. The jewelry buyers take them out and sell them in lots for very low cost to just about anyone willing to pay, those buyers then recycle the stones into settings or back into stores. The buyers are buying on pure wholesale value, whereas the end jeweler is selling for sentimental value.
mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Yea it’s like people that bring in their dead ancestors teeth, no one wants to buy an old tooth and certainly not one with $5 worth of gold in it.
mtnGoat··on How do jewellers capture every last particle of gold dust? (2017)
Some jewelers are dealing with things of great enough value that some gold dust or small stones doesn’t matter. Most jewelry value is not in the gold or gems, it’s in the eye of the beholder so to speak. So losing the actual ring is a much bigger loss than the gold/gem value. However, a guy on the street that isn’t dealing in six figure goods, places great value in that small gold amount.

Most people would be amazed at how little, when not in a shop under bright lights, jewelry is actually worth. Let’s just say they aren’t selling gold, they are selling emotions and hype. And many customers get extremely angry when they go to resell and find out how little it’s worth. You’ll be lucky to get a tenth of what you paid for the stones.

Source; my wife ran the biggest gold buying store in northern LA county for a few years.

mtnGoat··on Google's Gemini AI caught scanning Google Drive PDF files without permission
Agreed on that, but this is Google, do you really think they couldn’t have made this easier if it wasn’t in their best interest not to?

One would think, maybe even expect, a single setting in a single place would control this. And that their docs would be correct.

mtnGoat··on Google's Gemini AI caught scanning Google Drive PDF files without permission
Google ignores robots.txt as do many others. Try it yourself, setup a honeypot URL, don’t even link to it, just throw it in robots.txt, google bot will visit it at some point.
mtnGoat··on Google's Gemini AI caught scanning Google Drive PDF files without permission
He had the permissions turned off, so regardless of what it did with the document, it did it without permission! The title is correct!

Why do we post propaganda pieces on here? Tracking ships via photos is neither new nor novel. We’ve been doing since at least WWII.

mtnGoat··on Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again
They are using AI to help drive this dead horse… gotta have lots of data to build AI, they claim.
mtnGoat··on Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again
Have you seen their private rate cards for this level of buying? I bet if you had your calculus would change here.

Also, it’s easy to beat most costs if you get consumer grade hardware and don’t refresh it more than once a decade. I see that often when folks compare costs, but that’s dishonest and just kind of shoots their credibility in the foot.

mtnGoat··on Dear AWS, please let me be a cloud engineer again
“The whole world adopted that” … I think only 30% of the worlds internet accessible compute is in the cloud. Hyperbole much? lol.
mtnGoat··on Disney's Internal Slack Breached? NullBulge Leaks 1.1 TiB of Data
I believe in the state of California, for entertainment roles, it’s perfectly legal to state you only hire a certain race, sex, etc. for role. If you need an Asian male for a role, it’s ok to say so.

Maybe go read the stuff and find this darning evidence instead of just running your mouth about Disney with a bunch of accusations?
