mter··on Amazon Worker Jumps Off Company Building After E-Mail to Staff
The nightmare stories are often from years ago or non devs. There are some pretty awful oncalls though.

I'm on a team I like, work with people I get along with and have hours that are good (<=40) except around launches.

2 years after college, I make enough (~160k total comp, a bit over 100k salary) for money to not really be a motivating factor.

When I first got to amazon, I fully expected to jump ship within 6 months and move somewhere else. I stayed because I liked the people and the work was fine. If my team culture changes and I don't like it, I'll look external and internal then leave.

mter··on Personal data for more than 130K U.S. Navy sailors hacked
It's pretty common for the government to do this sort of thing --

The funniest part of all of this is that the non veterans here seem to be surprised by this.

mter··on How to Build Muscle
Keep lifting, but your workouts will suffer. I just went from ~274 to ~258. I'm weak as hell.

You won't lose the strength permanently. I took off years while doing my degree + my first 2 years and in the past 12 months I regained 20 years of lifting strength.

mter··on Calculus at the heart of the STEM gender gap, study suggests
College courses aren't standardized, but calculus is often a weeder class and far more difficult than previous classes.

This is often unintentional. The real problems are that kids are being passed through high school without learning math and that the other college classes are far too easy and lack any rigor. Therefore a class that requires memorization/understanding of concepts and isn't open book is considered incredibly difficult.

If english/history/science general education classes weren't such jokes then calculus wouldn't be considered a bottleneck.

mter··on Ask HN: What happens to people who graduate and can't find an entry job?
A number of my classmates weren't able to find jobs. Some have left this field, others went to grad school, some are self employed and others have gone into it/networking.

> But what about the stories of people bringing their laptops into the bathroom stalls

There's no where else to put it if you need to go to the bathroom and you take your laptop. I mean, some people just leave it at the sink but eh. But laptop into a stall to work? No.

> which are always packed to the gills because why would Jeff want to waste money on, you know, extra bathrooms and stuff

Most of the buildings weren't owned by amazon. So they have a normal amount of stalls. Which is a problem on the floors with lots of devs because we have the normal dev demographics.

mter··on Is fasting good for you? What we know so far
IF will work fine for the average person for a simple reason-- If you skip a meal and if you leave your other meals at the same size as before, then you have removed a few hundred calories from your diet and will lose weight for a while.

I've been doing IF for a while without trying to since I don't really eat breakfast and I really only eat lunch with my team because cooking dinner for 1 isn't awesome + delivery is too expensive.

It's okay for maintaining strength/losing weight slowly, but hunger/happiness on it really depends on the person. Some people don't do well with only eating 1 meal a day.

Bodybuilders aren't really reflective of how humans work. While cutting they're usually on test/tren + t3/clen/dnp and may still be using gh/insulin timed around their meals. And, working out multiple times a day, then playing with their carb/sodium intakes.

It's probably healthier to be morbidly obese than what a pro bb will put their body through.

> 14 said they would not personally do business with him as a result.

One of the most interesting things about current politics.

I've always found it odd that republicans haven't picked up on this and tried to seize on the opportunity to create an incubator for republican leaning/apolitical companies.

Seems like there would be a tremendous amount of opportunity there given the success of fox news, particularly for an apolitical twitter given recent censorship issues.

VA is for veterans.

Most of us use our own health insurance from our jobs because the VA is absolute garbage.

mter··on How We Learned to Kill
> investigate after they left

We tried this terrible idea once. It results in our guys dying because surprise, they detonate the ied when you walk up to it.

> shoot the legs not the heads

Have you ever watched programmers on tv doing things like 3 people typing on the same keyboard? That's the equivalent of this statement.

> Don't shoot unless shot upon

They fight by planting ieds. In your world, we'd be dying by the dozens. Interdicting the guys planting IEDs is the most effective way to prevent IED attacks.

mter··on What is it like to work as a software engineer at Amazon?
What are you looking to gain from the switch?

If you love your job, unless it comes with a substantial bump in pay, I wouldn't switch.
