msoucy··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
A couple of fun posts you might enjoy:

So You Want To Abolish Time Zones: https://qntm.org/abolish So You Want Continuous Time Zones: https://qntm.org/continuous

What I've gathered from these and similar articles is that time just kinda sucks in general, and no matter what we do we're going to suffer.

msoucy··on Joro spiders likely to spread beyond Georgia
I'm pretty sure the author of that book actually wrote a lot of the Antimemetics SCP posts in the first place. It's certainly up their alley.
msoucy··on I'm “still afraid to use spaces in file names” years old
My coworkers still don't quote strings in their bash scripts, even when they're paths... and yet they wonder why everything falls apart.
msoucy··on Trump’s new social media site collapses after trolls flood it before launch
Also interesting - it's being touted as proprietary code, but View Source (which as we all know is a clever hacker tool only) revealed that it's a fork/instance of Mastodon. Complete with not changing the error page's sad cartoon. The theme was slightly different, and the "toot" button has been renamed to "truth"... This is probably a violation of Masto's license, to not say you're using it.

Still remains to be seen whether or not federation support was planned to be enabled, as far as I can tell. But I can't help but find it amusing, as some people on masto talked about last night, that it's using the same core technology as Gab does/did - and the entire fediverse basically banded together to defederate from that instance.

msoucy··on Fosscord is a free open-source discord compatible chat, voice and video platform
Discord support is notoriously bad - not responding to issues in a timely manner, and being obtuse with the information they give.
msoucy··on Mozilla has defeated Microsoft’s default browser protections in Windows
Microsoft just forced all of their office suite file extensions to look at their MS Office... which I don't (shouldn't) have installed. I happily use LibreOffice. But suddenly things are going to different apps!

User Friendly, as long as by "friendly" you mean "actively sabotaging"

msoucy··on Zig cc: A drop-in replacement for GCC/Clang (2020)
I miss playing with D. It looks like you've done a lot of neat stuff recently, but I just don't have a project that I can use it for. I remember being thoroughly impressed with its metaprogramming capabilities in college when I was working on dproto.
msoucy··on Bob's Game
Oh man. I remember this as it was coming out. It was certainly a wild ride... I was in high school at the time and didn't know how to react to the whole protest thing. I remember I played the heck out of the demo that he released for the Nintendo DS - the Tetris parody in-game, "Tetrid", was a bit of a mindbend, and could probably cause seizures, but the deformed block shapes made an interesting puzzle.
msoucy··on How do I opt my access point out of Google Location services?
When exactly did this "opt-out" start? I'm seeing cnet articles from 2011 about this exact thing.
msoucy··on Idioms for the D Programming Language
Good to see D getting some acknowledgement now and again! I haven't touched it in a while, but have a soft place in my heart for it.

Features I absolutely love that I wish I could use at work (stuck in C++98 land, slowly upgrading) include ranges, template metaprogramming, and inout. So much of the surrounding toolset could be removed if only I had those capabilities.

msoucy··on Fediverse in 2020
The whole point of federation is that you don't need an accout on each instance, you can interact (respond, boost, favorite) with posts from one instance from the comfort of another.
msoucy··on The Spoon Theory (2003)
My favorite variation of this involves Dungeons and Dragons' spell slots mechanic. (Full disclaimer, I didn't make the concept, and can't find the post that I read it from)

For every long rest, you get a limited number of spell slots - for example at level 5 you get 4 level 1 spell slots, 3 level 2 spell slots, and 2 level 3 spell slots. These are all the "major" spells you can cast before you need to long rest again.

Some things may be more straightforward, and only take a level 1 spell slot. But it's still possible to run out of those. Luckily, you're able to use a higher level spell slot to cast that same spell. Sometimes this makes the "spell" more effective (using a higher level spell slot for programming might relate to intentionally putting more focus on it), other times you're just burning the higher leveled slot.

Other actions/spells may take more focus/concentration/energy/effort to do, akin to using a higher leveled spell slot. Naturally you can't do as many of those without resting.

Still other actions/spells are trivial for you to do. You can do those as many times as you'd like, and you don't feel (significantly) affected by them. These are your cantrips - the simplest spells, that can still be very useful.

I like this variation of the theory not just for the gaming flavor, but also because it changes the concept slightly from "this takes more spoons than that" to differently sized spoons, which feels more in line with how I relate to the tasks that give me trouble.

msoucy··on Microsoft says it found malicious software in its systems
I know, right? It's not nice to refer to your own product as malicious software.
msoucy··on Neon Programming Language
Most of the samples don't show anything for me... Maybe a description of what it's supposed to be, at most. No code or files.
msoucy··on Teens' anxiety levels dropped during pandemic, study finds
My sister's first college dorm was literally made by a prison architect. It showed.
msoucy··on Moreutils – Unix tools that nobody thought to write (2012)
I used vidir yesterday for something that would have been more annoying with other tools - if you swap the numbers at the beginning of the line, then you'll safely swap the file contents. Useful if your TV episodes are named the wrong thing...
msoucy··on Humanly Traversable Wormholes
According to some highly accurate documentaries I've seen, Giza is a more likely place.
msoucy··on The Miracle Sudoku [video]
I once spent an hour trying to solve a sudoku puzzle on a whiteboard in college. It turned out that the person who left it there made a mistake when they started to solve it, so given the state it was in when I started (no way to tell what was original and what was their deduction) it was impossible to solve.

I'm not bitter, of course not.

msoucy··on Chekhov's Gun
I saw this a while ago, and knew it would come back to haunt me.
msoucy··on Why Japan’s rail workers point at things (2017)
My boyfriend has a more amusing (and slightly inappropriate) version of this, but oddly enough doesn't mention keys or phone in his version.
msoucy··on How to SSH Properly
Some places still have RHEL6, unfortunately, which predates that.

msoucy··on Linux Terminal Goods
Mine is similar, but only does one cd command - to allow better use of `cd -`

    up() {
        local ups="."
        for((i=0;i<${1:-1};i++)); do
            ups="${ups}/.."
        done
        builtin cd "$ups"
    }

I like the idea, but it doesn't load any content for me at all:

msoucy··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
It's gotten to the point where that's actually a selling point for networks such as Mastodon... which is silly, because it should be normal behavior.
msoucy··on Tumblr will ban all adult content on December 17th
I believe that those systems are currently in place, but either aren't considered to be "enough", or people aren't using them properly.
msoucy··on Pattern Matching Without Regex – Introducing the Rosie Pattern Language
The article would be helped by using a full regex for ipv4 addresses - the one it uses would match invalid numbers (999.999.999.5 for instance), but the proper one is more complex (and would probably make for a better example as a result)

Also I think there's something wrong with this blog's formatting, it appears to be replacing underscores with italics even within code samples.

msoucy··on Helm: Personal Email Server
OK, tangental but concerning. According to that Comcast quote, are you not actually allowed to host a personal website using bandwidth that you pay for? Or is it specifically forbidding "public" web hosting, where "anybody" is allowed to host their own sites?
