If you need an ML engineer (pytorch or ggml) email hz4944554@gmail.com

I have side projects in Rust, Javascript, C and many other languages. I've worked back end, front end, embedded, built massive web-scale distributed systems and one off prototypes.

Yes I'm short apple (as of August 2025 $206 average price)

msgodel··on We caught companies making it harder to delete your personal data online
I tried to for a number of years after they added it and my download always expired before I was able to complete it since it didn't support restarting. Eventually I got locked out of my account so I just lost all the data.

These days I think of every account as ephemeral, anything I don't have in git on my local machine will disappear one day.

msgodel··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
Can it? Files on Windows 95 and files on most Unix-like OSes are very different things.
msgodel··on Nearly 1 in 3 Starlink satellites detected within the SKA-Low frequency band
I think most people assume the individual satellites aren't synchronized well enough to produce a mutually coherent signal so the power from each of them will just be normally superimposed.

IE they're thinking of the individual phased arrays as just highly directional antennas for the satellites. The idea that they could be coherent actually means there could be more power than we might expect.

msgodel··on Please Don't Promote Wayland
It's not just the hype, it's the "you're holding it wrong" gaslighting. I have zero tolerance for that sort of thing these days. At this point I'll use kernel virtual terminals before I use Wayland.
msgodel··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
The Win95 API is pretty incomplete. That was actually a terrible OS. The oldest I'd go playing this game with anything serious is probably XP.
msgodel··on F-Droid build servers can't build modern Android apps due to outdated CPUs
I think we only know about F-Droid because it's the only high quality one.

Low quality software tends to be popular among the general public because they're very bad at evaluating software quality.

msgodel··on Vanishing from Hyundai’s data network
Good to know, I guess I'll write an .ssh/id_rsa harvesting worm and chuck it in a pip package tonight with a license that includes a clause requiring surrender of any machine its installed on.
msgodel··on Please Don't Promote Wayland
It looks to me like there are quite a few more basic features fundamentally incompatible with Wayland's architecture than X's. Maybe X has issues but Wayland is still a regression.
msgodel··on Scapegoating the Algorithm
All societies have elites, you can't eliminate that. What you want are societies where the elite's interests and the people's interests are aligned.

EDIT: meh. At least aristocracies typically had a connection with the people and tended to not openly attack them or their culture.

msgodel··on Scapegoating the Algorithm
The last company I worked at gave us all macbooks. I noticed every few days it put an article titled something like "maybe its your parents holding you back" in the sidebar. This seems to be the default configuration on OSX. I'm surprised anyone tolerates this, if I found something like that in my house on my own equipment it would go strait in the trash.
msgodel··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
Nah I don't think the directories need to be reviewed (except for listings for things that don't actually exist.) Just show the listings in lexicographic order like how phone books worked.

We already have the law as the meta norm. Let law enforcement do its job.

msgodel··on That viral video of a 'deactivated' Tesla Cybertruck is a fake
I frankly have very little sympathy for Tesla here. If you're going to "sell" people a computer and not give them root it's impossible for everyone else to tell if you're screwing around with it like that.

You want to be the admin for everyone else? Well you get the responsibility and emotional demands from everyone else too.

msgodel··on Show HN: Building a web search engine from scratch with 3B neural embeddings
I wish there was an old fashioned n-gram + page rank search engine for those of us who don't mind the issues the older Google had. I've thought about making my own a few times.
msgodel··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
I don't know if that's quite right. A nice business directory would probably be better but most people don't want to settle for that.
msgodel··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
Sales are the most important thing in business. Everything else only matters insofar as it drives sales.
msgodel··on Evaluating LLMs playing text adventures
I've been experimenting with this as well with the goal of using it for robotics. I don't think this will be as hard to train for as people think though.

It's interesting he wrote a separate program to wrap the z-machine interpreter. I integrated my wrapper directly into my pytorch training program.

msgodel··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
Sure but IIRC the statistics were relative to previous polls and the conversation was about how people talk about porn on the web not how they actually use it so I think in this case it actually works well.
msgodel··on OpenSSH Post-Quantum Cryptography
It can be limiting for other things though. Encrypted DNS was already marginal for some TLD operators, adding the overhead of PQC may actually make it completely impractical.
msgodel··on AOL to discontinue dial-up internet
It's funny, many people complain that the web got way worse after smartphones became common. It's the second eternal September.
msgodel··on Grok Has Been Suspended
The web is essentially a machine for shredding taboos though. We might end up with an immovable object vs unstoppable force situation.
msgodel··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
In a number of recent polls in English speaking countries young men have been one of the strongest anti-porn demographics actually. I think HN being tech adjacent with the history and practical reality of how the internet works along with being more libertarian (or at least liberal) is going to bias that more than the gender distribution.
msgodel··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
As someone who's paid a lot of careful attention to this for the past four years or so, frankely, I think dang and ycombinator (it's almost crazy they're still running a forum these days) is making the absolute best of an impossible situation. I'd challenge you to find anyone doing better.
msgodel··on Vanishing from Hyundai’s data network
So I can put a disclaimer in remote shell malware I distribute on the internet and get out of a CFAA violation? I don't think that's quite right. A lot of this software is very clearly malware, that it's shipped by the manufacturer and includes documentation doesn't change that IMO.
msgodel··on Meta Leaks Part 1: Israel and Meta
Not saying I agree with it but if it's true censored people who have concrete evidence it's happening probably are going to continuously shout it from the rooftops until they feel their neighbors are sufficiently aware.
msgodel··on Auf Wiedersehen, GitHub
tbh I had never thought carefully about it until now. I always got excited hearing it from other people thinking "Oh another person who likes Douglas Adam's book!"

I'm kind of glad I read this thread though, I can see why it could stress people out.

msgodel··on Ask HN: Do you think differently about working on open source these days?
I understand why people initially feel this way but the destruction of copyright is a realization of the end goal of the GPL, furthermore the way LLMs do it doesn't seem to impinge on the way it's used practically: preventing corporate administrators from mishandling source.

I wish pro-copy-left people could see this better. The future is brighter than you think.

msgodel··on Theft is not fair use
I think most people are already pretty annoyed with how copyright law makes very reasonable applications of technology impossible. What these whiny retards want to do is put copyright between everyone and a technical revolution.

Do that and copyright will go away entirely. If you like copyright, try to come up with practical and reasonable compromises. Don't try to break things.

msgodel··on Vanishing from Hyundai’s data network
It's arguably a violation of the CFAA.
msgodel··on Basic Social Skills Guide
>Relatedly, I would say that in the USA, there is the mentality "Our society is the greatest ever made since God created Earth, so if you don't feel happy, the fault is on you: you need to self-improve."

Unjustified self deprecation can lead to dereliction. IMO Americans feel this way because it's appropriate to.

msgodel··on Fight Chat Control
It sounds to me like the Europeans need to have an actual fight (that is with bullets and artillery) with this weird EU pseudo government thing. It sounds like a loss for them to me.
