mscasts··on Sqlite: Code Of Conduct
> yes even the Atheist worships something

Actually, no. It's the absence of it. It's like saying not smoking is a habit. It makes no sense.

mscasts··on UK firms 'near point of no return'
The issue is that the leaders of several countries in western Europe seem to not listen at all at the public frustration.

I sympathize with Brexit voters, I would vote to leave the EU at any given day if given the chance.

mscasts··on Windows 10 October 2018 Update no longer deletes your data
But.. if you want to game and/or do stuff like games programming, video rendering etc you kind of want discrete graphics.
mscasts··on How to Get Things Done When You Don't Feel Like It
My best tip is to get more sleep. It is way easier to complete stuff and do stuff you don't want to with a well rested mind.

When I am sleep deprived, I procrastinate a lot. When I get about 8 hours I don't.

mscasts··on SEC Sues Musk and Seeks Ban for His Tweets on Go-Private Deal
Totally agree with the sentiment. I don't despise Musk, I rather like him a lot for all of his work.

BUT I also thought it was weird that, in the podcast, he didn't mention and never has mentioned (of all the appearances I've seen) the entire team of people helping him to the success. Specially in the podcast, because one question that was repeated several times by Joe was like "how do you manage to do all the stuff you do?". I do not like this way of portraying one guy as some sort of alien that does all this when in reality he does very little if you compare it to the work that is done by his employees.

Leadership that goes in the direction that Musk does is really good and very valuable but it's not what creates actual worth.

mscasts··on After century of removing appendixes, doctors find antibiotics can be enough
Well, they were fiddling around with my intestines, moving them around (I have / had intestinal malrotation) and they told me that it could be an issue if they didn't remove it.

Although they told me afterwards, but the surgeons were extremely competent so I don't question their judgement.

mscasts··on After century of removing appendixes, doctors find antibiotics can be enough
The removed mine while I had another surgery just in case.
mscasts··on Medieval Wellness Tips
> For to be invysybell

Someone should try it. It is proven! But the issue is, those who proved it are long dead so we need some new evidence.

mscasts··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
Good user.
mscasts··on Why I’m done with Chrome
That still doesn't solve the problem that it will probably be enough time for Google to send your browser data to them if they change that to be the case, which honestly they probably will.
mscasts··on Why I’m done with Chrome
A lot people who are heavily right leaning in terms of policies does not like Google.

I even know a local Swedish podcaster that actively say DuckDuckGo instead of Google when relating to search. I completely understand this because I totally agree with the concept that Google has become politicized like a lot of companies unfortunately have become.

mscasts··on The Making of Underrun – A WebGL Shooter in 13kb of JavaScript
Wow this is one of the cooler projects I have seen for that little amount of code.
mscasts··on Build Impossible Programs
A tip is to talk in slow motion, because if you talk super slow and think of it during your talk, you will probably talk normally.

Your mind and heart races and so does your speech, so that trick is good for when you're nervous and have helped me several times when giving presentations. You will think that you're talking in slow, but in reality you are talking normally.

mscasts··on The Evolution of Reddit’s Architecture (2017)
I'm an avid reddit user but I completely agree with you. The redesign is outright horrible to the point that if they stop allowing the old design (old.reddit.com) sometime in the future and force me on the new design I will most likely just stop using reddit.

This is what makes me dislike politicians, when they do not respect the vote of the public when asked.

I would vote for leaving the EU any day, if given the chance. I also would be very, very angry if the politicians wouldn't respect that outcome if it got to be the case.

mscasts··on EU approves internet copyright law, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’
If there is great resistance from the public after it becomes a disaster for all eu-countries it is much more likely to not go through than in an eu-country with resistance.
mscasts··on EU approves internet copyright law, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’
Well, yes. Politicians created the system where it was possible for this to go through without any support from citizens, because they have simply no idea what is going on inside the EU.

TL;DR, politicians created the EU, it currently sucks even if they pass some very good laws sometimes. Now it's time for some very bad laws, the issue is that these laws is so bad the good laws seems very small in comparison.

mscasts··on LinkedIn sucks
> I have 16,000 connections.

Maybe that is the reason why it sucks for the author. I use LinkedIn as my personal CV and have gotten a job through it. If I had to search for a new job it would probably be through LinkedIn, Stackoverflow and other smaller sites for remote workers.

LinkedIn is better than all other general career sites, much much better and I can always point people there if they want my CV.

mscasts··on EU approves internet copyright law, including ‘link tax’ and ‘upload filter’
This is so sad but kind of expected. EU is run by politicians and the public has very little to no insight.

After this goes through I will become a single-issue voter, to leave the EU.

mscasts··on Google wants to get rid of URLs but doesn’t know what to use instead
But the issue is that many also get much information from them. It's like removing info about air pressure in your car tires because "most people don't understand it".

I don't understand why we should view computer illiteracy as something we must cater to. You don't have to know everything about how URL works, but being able to change ?page=1 to ?page=2 and knowing what is probably going to happen and similar tasks is knowledge probably needed today and should be teached.

Why does people never learn this? If you teach people to be uneducated this is exactly what they will become.

mscasts··on Google wants to get rid of URLs but doesn’t know what to use instead
Sorry, but that is just such a bullshit quote. They want to have control on identity and that's it. URL as the article say stands for Uniform Resource Locators and is about locating resources, not proving identity.

They are trying to solve an issue which isn't even part of the responsibility of the URL. The domain is the truthteller here. If you can find a way to display to the user what actual domain he or she is on,you have solved the issue.

mscasts··on Google wants to get rid of URLs but doesn’t know what to use instead
Whatever Google comes up with I'm pretty confident that I will disagree heavily with. URLs is fantastic, solves the problem well and basically has little to no issues. There is no need to fix something that is not broken.

Thanks, but could you please stop trying to control the web Google?

mscasts··on The #1 Office Perk? Natural Light
I was going to write that as well. I worked at a place that had automatic curtains which covered the windows when it was sunny out. It immediately felt like a prison when they went down and that was a standing joke among employees.

I can't even imagine working in a place like that 8 hours a day. I would probably rather live in the woods or something.

mscasts··on Fitbit's 150B hours of heart data
First of all, thanks for the thorough post!

[1] and [2] sounds kind of positive rather than negative though.

Maybe smokers ought to pay more for their insurance? I'm not saying it's great that they can track people who smoke but the data could as well be used to strengthen your case, isn't that right?

I get it if you are an US-citizen and don't want to use fitness tracker that sends data to their servers but I am a Swedish citizen. I don't have a health insurance so I don't have to worry about any insurance company finding out anything about my health.

Maybe there are privacy concerns and maybe they should be addressed, but there is also most likely a lot of benefit to be gained from these systems. Just because the US has a crappy health system that exploits tech like health trackers doesn't mean that the health tracker stuff is inherently bad. Since I live in EU, I can also require them to delete the data thanks to GDPR.

TL;DR: I get the worry you may have as an US citizen, but basically none of these concerns seem to apply to a EU citizen that have universal health care.

mscasts··on Fitbit's 150B hours of heart data
Well, you kind of are but not in terms of money but rather with increased knowledge of patterns which should be avoided. They can tell you how to get healthier, identify the optimal sleep and exercise patterns, identify if certain places causes people to be more healthy/unhealthy etc.

Companies will most likely use this information as selling points for their devices / apps. I value this information much higher than a small amount of money.

mscasts··on Fitbit's 150B hours of heart data
Yes, that is the situation for me too. I guess if my healthcare was depending on my insurence getting through I would be more careful with that data but I don't think they would be able to identify me.

I actually think the reverse could be true. If you own a watch, a scale etc you are obviously thinking about your health and prioritizing it. It makes little sense to punish people who prioritize their health and monitor it to evade bad stuff.

If I notice a bad trend I would do something about it, if it was my heart rate I would probably call a doctor and usually with health the earlier you identify an issue the more likely it will be easier to do something about it.

If you go with a bad heart for years it will probably be harder to get healthy after that and will probably be more expensive as you might require a surgery which perhaps could be avoided.

mscasts··on Fitbit's 150B hours of heart data
While I am a privacy advocate in most aspects, I fail to see how my basic health data like HR, weight etc is going to be used against me except for bad marketing practices.

If I talk ill about some political ideologies and that gets stored until some evil dictator gets in power, that I can get. But who is going to put me in prison for having a high heart rate?

The benefits in the other hand is great. I get to see and view my health improve or get worse over time and they can use my data along with many others to get patterns and help improve the health of everyone.

I guess what I am saying is that I don't really get the panic about giving up health data that is displayed in this comment section. I also own a Withings / Nokia watch together with a scale and it works great, have motivated me to get more sleep and exercise more. My experience is purely positive and I am quite certain that owning devices like this helps a lot of people get more healthy, detect bad trends etc.

mscasts··on DuckDuckGo Raises $10M
I have been using DDG for about 2 years. While I also have !g programmed into my fingers, I notice that most of the time Google don't give me the result I want / expect so I have actually stopped doing that lately.

In fact, many, many times DDG gives me better results than Google.

mscasts··on Political advertising on Google
I find it interesting that it's translated to Swedish but is only about the US. Are they using Google translate behind the scenes perhaps?
