msc··on Why I Removed AVG from my Computer: A tale of abusive anti-virus-ware
She used it for years according to her blog, and doesn't mention buying a non-free version of any of their products. Becomes unhappy with the product, and doesn't mention contacting the vendor about it. Writes on her blog about how it sucks, and recommends another freeware product. I definitely wouldn't call her a customer.
msc··on Why I Removed AVG from my Computer: A tale of abusive anti-virus-ware
Thanks for the clarification. I tried AVG some months ago, and I did notice the link checker. I found the idea useful, but it wasn't for me, so I disabled it. I didn't notice a change in the tray icon, so I guess I was using a fixed version.
msc··on iPhone app monitors speed traps
I'm not in North America, but here in South America, they are definitely after revenue. I'm usually very respectful when it comes to speed limits. The only speeding ticket I got was driving by a big avenue. Basically, there's an elementary school near this avenue so logically there's a lower limit in that area. I went over the limit by 17 KM/H on a friday night (clearly no children could be around). Next block I get pulled over and get a very juicy ticket, they were obviously fishing.

I'm not familiar with the application, but from the article it's implied that it can be used to avoid sobriety check points. I don't see how this helps improve safety at all.

msc··on Interesting thoughts on Windows 7 design from a long-time Mac user
"First impressions of Windows 7 from a Mac user:

    * I’m slightly amused that there were 8 updates already."
3 months after buying my first Apple product (MacBook Aluminium), I find out that an old Java vulnerability was still unpatched. They finally patched it, what, a couple of weeks ago? I welcome updates, I don't know what's so amusing.
msc··on Professor griefs gamers, feigns surprise at reaction
But they did fix the loophole, which means they weren't supporting what he was doing, and didn't want other people to do it. I'm not familiar with their banning policy, but like I said, trying any cute tricks like that in other MMO communities can certainly get you banned.
msc··on Professor griefs gamers, feigns surprise at reaction
The way I see it, he was clearly exploiting game mechanics to grief other players. He was using a specific ability, one that teleports players, to teleport them in front of what appears to be an unkillable robot that instantly kills everything. After he was done with that, he "innocently" taunts them. I'm pretty shocked that NCSoft didn't do anything about this. In other MMOs, that person would've been banned a long, long time ago. I played CoH for a bit, and I think it's still one of the nicest, casual MMO communities around, hell, one of the nicest, casual gaming communities around. This guy walked around a virtual community, disrupting it on purpose just for an experiment. Imagine coming home after a pretty long day of college/work, log on to play, only to have someone permanently teleport you to death, and then taunt you.
msc··on Windows 7 is the same as Ubuntu
It can, but not officially as far as I know. You can mod the XBox or buy a third party adapter to plug in a keyboard/mouse. Also, modding your XBox can get you banned from XBox live.
msc··on Windows 7 is the same as Ubuntu
Highly doubt this, unless the XBox comes with a keyboard and a mouse. Some genres simply can't be played with controllers.
msc··on Twitter URLs and Limitations
Interesting article. To solve the security issue he mentions, I started trying out various twitter clients. I ended up using Nambu for Mac OS X. Mouse over a link gives you the real URL, if it has one. Personally, the extra latency that comes from using URL shortening services doesn't bother me, but the thought that the service might disappear does.
msc··on Windows 7 pricing announced: cheaper than Vista
If I have time, I'll finish two desktops by the end of the week, upgrading mine and building another for a relative with spare parts. I also know quite a bit of gamers that build their own desktops too.
msc··on Linux: It doesn't get any faster
I gave up on using Linux as my desktop, my family just didn't get it, and it was a pain to configure on a laptop I had. The main problem back then was that some hardware manufacturers would not produce drivers for Linux because it wasn't popular, or because of licensing issues. Has this changed much? I do think the GUI was intuitive, the problem I saw at home was that some people drove automatic shift cars their whole life, and they had a problem switching to stick shifts.
msc··on Url Shorteners: Destroying the Web Since 2002
I think the reason is SMS compatibility.
