mrsmee89··on Divorce does funny things
As a divorced man, I can attest to this wholeheartedly. There's an energy a man gets when you're building a family that helps motivate through the struggle. When you get divorced, especially when kids are involved, there's an expectation in our society (court system, social pressure, etc) to continue life as if that energy still exists, it simply doesn't. It's maddening. Breaking up a family is lose-lose. There are no winners, but men are the biggest losers.
mrsmee89··on Ask HN: What do you think about Elixir and Phoenix for web/mobile app?
That was always my problem with node/js in general. Installing packages for laughably basic functions got out of hand real quick. Can you point me towards somewhere where I can read about the alternative solutions you speak of?
mrsmee89··on Ask HN: What do you think about Elixir and Phoenix for web/mobile app?
It’s so cool!!
mrsmee89··on Ask HN: What do you think about Elixir and Phoenix for web/mobile app?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree node is counter intuitive, I’m curious why you think it was a mistake?

Elixir is quite new but Erlang, which it compiles to, is quite seasoned at least in programming years. That gives me confidence in terms of stability. I was able to spin up a basic real-time app in elixir in about an hour. Something that would’ve taken much longer in Django or rails. Never wanted to join an open source team before but I’m strongly considering making myself available to the phoenix team :)

mrsmee89··on Ask HN: What do you think about Elixir and Phoenix for web/mobile app?
I’m partial to phoenix as well :) it seems so thought out out. Things work exactly as I would expect them o work. A real pleasure. Thanks for the phoenix channels suggestion looks very cool. I wonder if liveview piggybacks off of it.

mrsmee89··on Ask HN: Would you listen to a worldview/moral landscape podcast?
That's exactly what I'm thinking! Would being anonymous be important you?
mrsmee89··on Ask HN: Talked about my fave cereals now I see ads for the exact cereals. How?
That’s incredibly creepy! I get the need for advertising but the sliminess has gone too far. I know it’s silly but I feel like there’s space right now for an ad company with morals that they can prove :)

Also see @davismwfl answer on this thread.

mrsmee89··on Ask HN: Talked about my fave cereals now I see ads for the exact cereals. How?
Wow! If you tell someone that you purchased #123 and they know that #123 is shampoo, how is that not the same exact thing as telling them that you bought shampoo? I’m shocked at the sliminess of this.
mrsmee89··on Ask HN: Talked about my fave cereals now I see ads for the exact cereals. How?
Thanks for the detailed answer. That’s fascinating.

To be clear , you’re suggesting that there’s a map of labels (diapers, cereal etc) to marketing ids so apple can still say they anonymize your data even though for all intent and purposes, they don’t?

mrsmee89··on Ask HN: Talked about my fave cereals now I see ads for the exact cereals. How?
I didn’t, a family member did buy one of the two via credit card. Could that be it? The. We got associated via the WiFi network?
mrsmee89··on Ask HN: Talked about my fave cereals now I see ads for the exact cereals. How?
Nobody else had a phone with them. There where only the two devices I mentioned above. Both connected to the same WiFi network.

That’s a good question. Boredom led to the convo, I wasn’t using my phone at the time but even if I was “googling”, I would’ve been using duck duck go.

mrsmee89··on The Value of Grey Thinking (2016)
I had the exact same reaction.
mrsmee89··on The Value of Grey Thinking (2016)
In spirit of this article, I wonder why grey thinking is so uncommon. I get it’s hard but it feels like it’s only hard because it’s uncommon. When did removing nuance become such a common way of upbringing? What’s the driving force behind removing nuance?

Curious what the HackerNews community thinks.

mrsmee89··on uBlock Origin 1.20
Interesting. How do they differ fundamentally?
mrsmee89··on uBlock Origin 1.20
This is great! Any plans for Safari support?

I’m not sure about letting you filter but they have a toggle to hide explicit songs in settings -> explicit content (on iOS at least)
mrsmee89··on Facebook confirms data sharing with Chinese companies
I agree. Telling users they own their data and therefor have complete control over it is, at best, a misunderstanding of what we humans have control over and at worst insinuating that own=control to make the user think they are right.
mrsmee89··on Apple Looks to Expand Advertising Business with New Network for Apps
Thanks for the validation, I think so too :)
mrsmee89··on Apple Looks to Expand Advertising Business with New Network for Apps
I think Apple is driven by "What will make the people we care about happy?".

If they are entering the advertising market that means that some very self-aware people think this will make people they care about happy.

That's my worthless stupid opinion, that I consider to be fact :)
