Hundreds of thousands, in fact. But I bet it’s a downward trend with no hope of a turnaround.

I am fairly indifferent to Slack - I have to use it for work.

But our experiences seem so vastly different: - UI is, with the exception of large media, snappy and pretty native feeling - no jumps (that I can recall)

The mobile app is okayish though its offline indication and notifications are a bit frustrating.

What machine are you running it on?

mrroryflint··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
"Now you have a voice you are a terror of demands"

Made me smile - great line.

mrroryflint··on 21 Day Experiment #2 – No Sugar
I did read that but I don't think I am/was in ketosis - I've eaten a fair amount of carbs (rice/pasta/potatoes).
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Infinite Hagakure
On a desktop it was fairly comfortable - on mobile it was too fast to sustain/process the information beyond seeing the words.
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Infinite Hagakure
Kind. Thank you.
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Infinite Hagakure
Have fixed - let me know what you think.
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Infinite Hagakure
Give it a go on a desktop monitor - it should be a lot slower. The nature means smaller screens will scroll faster - I'm pushing a change shortly that will mean the sync isn't as accurate but it'll be nicer to view on all devices.

Thank you :-)

There actually is a small icon on the bottom right (removed on mobile) but I obviously made it TOO subtle!

mrroryflint··on Show HN: Infinite Hagakure
I have pained over this for a while and tried to find a happy medium...but on reflection and walking away for a while, I think it is slightly too fast. Will update.
mrroryflint··on Minimum Viable Blog
I have a very simple setup using 11ty (https://rory.codes) - but nowhere near as simple as this. Very impressive!
mrroryflint··on Tinystatus: A tiny status page generated by a Python script
Assuming this isn't snark - because if I am looking for a tool to do a job, seeing an immediate visual representation of what I am likely to expect is very helpful. I don't want to go through the full installation to view a demo and then immediately realise it was not remotely close to what I was expecting.
mrroryflint··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2024)
Tipalti - Finance Automation Platform - Specifically Expenses Mobile App https://tipalti.com/

Mid React Engineer - Our team works with React Native (though we often work in Native code too). However we are open to exceptional React engineers who are willing/wanting to move into the mobile world.

Senior QA Mobile Automation Engineer - We are an exclusively mobile team so we are hiring specifically for a QA with deep mobile experience.

- All roles are hybrid in London England - 3 days a week in office -

mrroryflint··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
To clarify - Hybrid as in several days in office.
mrroryflint··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2024)
London - Tipalti (Fintech)

We're hiring two hybrid mobile engineers (React Native) - one senior, one mid.

Also hiring one senior QA.

Send me a message (email is on rory.codes) and I can get the ball rolling very quickly.

mrroryflint··on Fast Crimes at Lambda School
I find it interesting there is no major mention of the failed Europe/Africa expansion. It was a great program that launched my career as well as many others - but God behind the scenes was insanity.
mrroryflint··on Researchers identify major driver of inflammatory bowel and related diseases
Have you seen some of the nutrition "drinks" and replacement shakes that MANY (including the NHS) recommend for IBD sufferers? It's utter insanity.
mrroryflint··on Ask HN: What do you do on flights?
A fun challenge - try and do nothing.

I did it on the way to Singapore and it was, eventually, bliss. No music, no book, no film, nothing. I just sat.

mrroryflint··on Great Books – A Liberal Education (An Attempt)
I look forward to finding out if we agree or disagree.
mrroryflint··on Ask HN: Can you get into engineering management without being a senior?
Again, interesting and useful points - thanks.

I think the tone is a little sad, but I suppose it is hackernews after all!

I appreciate the input.

mrroryflint··on Ask HN: Can you get into engineering management without being a senior?
Interesting - I've seen quite the opposite. That isn't to doubt your observation/experience, of course.

I've seen extremely competent technical managers be utterly unable to manage humans and try and impose their own technical decisions on those who are more than capable of making them themselves - all at the expense of what I would consider to be the 'real' management work.

Additionally, "Awful engineers who are people people are not adequate management material." - nobody made mention of awful engineering in my question and I would suggest I am far from that.

mrroryflint··on Ask HN: What Are You Learning?
Currently learning French for fun (c'est difficile!)

Professionally learning a lot about Kafka and Event Sourcing.

Personally trying to learn how to raise a happy and healthy child in anticipation of my first born, who is imminent!

How about you?

mrroryflint··on Show HN: Day by Day – every day of my life
Good question - for my own purposes I'd rather be conservative but you have a very valid point.
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Day by Day – every day of my life
Great idea - is it online anywhere?
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Day by Day – every day of my life
Ha - yeah they are indeed.
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Day by Day – every day of my life
Thanks for the recommendation - I just got back from the local bookshop and managed to grab a paperback copy.

Looks great - I love the design.
mrroryflint··on Show HN: Day by Day – every day of my life
That's good to know - thanks. I am using a library called React-Tooltip and even on a very high spec computer it doesn't feel as fast as I would like. I will investigate!

You may be right! I would argue that these charts, which typically depict weeks, have been of interest to me from around 2008 when I saw a Calvin & Hobbes version on Tumblr.

That being said, it is probably no coincidence that I made this soon after my Dad passed away. Though I think it is likely also the impending birth of my first child contributing also.
