mrpoptart··on This is how an engineer feels when he's surrounded by idiots
The moment the client's request is determined to be impossible, the only problem can be communication and the engineer's assumptions must be challenged. Instead of feeling that he is an "expert," he should try to understand what the client actually wants. Instead of asking questions to point out how the client's request is wrong, he could have asked questions about how to clarify the problem -- "what purpose do the red lines serve?" "why did you choose green ink?" etc.
mrpoptart··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
You are now an expert in College. What do you know now that a freshman does not? Not just the schooling, but the ability to use the school more efficiently. The people you know, the places with which you're familiar, and the little nuances of college life are all part of your achievement. Similar processes happen in the software world. With time, your toolset grows, your professional capability grows, and your ability to produce higher quality with less effort grows.

I used to use Aardvark https://web.archive.org/web/20110812083048/http://vark.com/ and their service was actually pretty decent -- responses were near to 100% provided you didn't ask anything too technical. If it was something that could be answered with general opinion like "where's the best burger in SF" it worked great. That said, Facebook does the same thing.

If you're looking for this, chances are what you're actually looking for is thewirecutter.com. They actually give you a recommendation about which is the best, then tell you why in detail.
mrpoptart··on I don't care about your code challenge
Your td;dr: should go at the top. Having started working at a company that asked me to do one of these, it was different specifically in that it was paid. This means it's not a waste of anyone's time. A time-constrained, feature-rich project shows a number of things about a programmer including how they handle pressure, how they prioritize their tasks, whether their estimates are reasonable, and whether they know about what you're hiring them for.

mrpoptart··on The Hacker News Generation (Afraid of Hard Work)
Anyone who has lived through their 20s understands that 20-somethings are not yet adults and don't quite get how the world works. They'll be forced to live in it with responsibility soon enough. Don't shame them for trying to explore the boundaries and make mistakes along the way. Your path is not the only one.
