Howdy, glad to hear it’s less for you, that’s a much more reasonable amount of memory to use but are you sure you’re including all active memory from each of its processes / worker threads?

Small user base? I think not...
mrmondo··on Standalone Signal Desktop
Was happy to see this as it was the only reason I had Chromium on my machine - launched it and right off the bat it uses 350MB of memory!

Inspecting the app, it appears to be just another Javascript app (Electron).

mrmondo··on Orchid: a new surveillance-free layer on top of the existing Internet
While the project is interesting, what is up with running it off nodejs!?
mrmondo··on Date/Time Inputs Enabled on Firefox Nightly
Yeah I thought that was really confusing! I would have expected that for countries that commonly read left to right and count from small to big the format of day(smallest common date unit)/month/year(largest common date unit) would at least be a sensible default if unable to detect the exact clients country standard, failing that the ISO of YEAR-MONTH-DAY would be fine but not jumbling it up like this and putting the day between the month and year - I know my comment could sound a bit ‘flamey’ but I’m purely interested / invested from the point of view of logical or biology, I don’t care about ‘X country does Y better’.
mrmondo··on Oracle VM VirtualBox 5.2 Is Now Available
I have, plenty of times, so glad I ditched it a few years back - the amount of performance related issues was astounding too.
mrmondo··on Problems with MacBook butterfly switch keyboards
I might sound like the black sheep here - but I really enjoy typing on the new MacBook keyboard, even when switching from my DAS ultimate on my desktop and back - I truly enjoy it and make far less mistakes while typing faster.

What I do think is completely useless is he touchbar, nice idea but no real use.

mrmondo··on Animals We Ate into Extinction
Came here to say just this, and the Haast Eagle as well...
mrmondo··on Adding Kubernetes support to the Docker platform
Why wouldn’t you start with Kubes? Less vendor lock in and a much bigger community.
mrmondo··on Min – A smarter web browser
That site looks pretty awful to me, while I can clearly make out the buttons from other elements it looks like a old stock Drupal theme or something along those lines.
mrmondo··on Internet speed guarantees must be realistic, says Ofcom
Yeah I can't imagine using less than 500GB~ month myself, wireless isn't the answer as it does not scale at all well.
mrmondo··on Min – A smarter web browser
I don't see what's "smarter" about it.

- The UI seems clumsy and is so flat that it doesn't offer any directional hinting at all.

- It's the same size as Firefox (160MB) despite offering significantly less features.

- It's resource consumption seems to be about 25% more than a fresh Firefox instance.

mrmondo··on Internet speed guarantees must be realistic, says Ofcom
Australia is appalling for this, the average person paying for 24Mbit ADSL2+ gets a messily 7Mbit (and I thought 24Mbit was bad enough!).
mrmondo··on Interactive Vim tutorial
As a heavy vim user for 15~ years I don't find h,j,k,l useful and for new users that may be one of the most confusing / alien changes.
mrmondo··on Tiny Phones That Go Inside a Butt (2016)
Easily - unless you main priority is only the price and you’re not bothered by / interested in ’smart’ functionality or apps, the camera, build quality and OS are excellent, also it’s worth noting that the iPhone’s security and privacy design is generally significantly better not to mention your phone will not only still work after several years - it’ll still get fast, regular security updates.

Indeed, it’d be nice if there was a way to spoof your location without connecting to an offshore VPN (or a DNS proxy in some cases) but we just don’t seem to be there yet.
mrmondo··on PopSQL – Modern, collaborative SQL editor for your team
Question: is the native app actually native or JavaScript in a web frame?
mrmondo··on PopSQL – Modern, collaborative SQL editor for your team
Metabase it’s pretty nice, although it’s a bit slow and resource intensive.
mrmondo··on Tiny Phones That Go Inside a Butt (2016)
If you’re looking for a small phone I’d recommend the iPhone SE over it any day of the week. As for something different and stupidly small it’s a neat little thing and it seems to perform pretty well although I’d recommend installing a custom rom and disabling animations etc... if you want it to be speedy, at the end of the day I don’t find Android’s UI/UX overly well thought out and iOS is certainly easier to use on a small screen.
mrmondo··on Tiny Phones That Go Inside a Butt (2016)
I ordered a jelly which I believe currently holds the title of the worlds smallest smartphone, it arrived today and damn that thing is tiny! I don’t have any intention of putting it in my bum but if that was your aim - it’d certainly get you tweeting from jail in no time.

mrmondo··on Google CEO Appeases Publishers with Subscriptions
Sounded interesting but it looks like they’ve disallowed Australians from signing up.
mrmondo··on WalmartLabs opensources its tool for bringing React Native to mobile apps
Yeah it's pretty easy to tell, even if they've been modified to not look like a browser frame if you notice poor performance or increased memory usage you just have a look in activity monitor or ps and you'll quickly see the javascript web workers etc...
mrmondo··on WalmartLabs opensources its tool for bringing React Native to mobile apps
Absolutely agree, I avoid react / JavaScript ‘apps’ at all cost, they perform poorly, use excessive resources and seem to discourage an engineering mindset when writing code.
mrmondo··on Why kernel development still uses email (2016)
Looking forward to OTR for XMPP :)

mrmondo··on Exploiting the Wi-Fi Stack on Apple Devices
Perhaps click bait was not the correct term, I more noticed that it’s exploiting previous versions of software - not the current stable release.
mrmondo··on Style2Paints: AI colorization of images
The painting you have used as a reference point of cultural standards is not a current style of art that is widely practised or recognised as ‘normal’.
mrmondo··on Photos: what Puerto Rico’s unfolding humanitarian disaster looks like
Amazing photos, thanks for sharing. What’s really surprised me around the news coverage of the event is how many Americans did not realise that Puerto Rico is part of America (although very much mistreated by the government as if it was not particularly is not a state).
mrmondo··on Style2Paints: AI colorization of images
Indeed, they seem somewhat hypersexualised for their suggested age or at least hypersensualised to some extent.

Furthermore, and this is purely my opinion of course - they seem a bit... tacky(?) and I must admit if I had opened this link at work I would have been a bit embarrassed if someone cartoons of young girls like this on my display.

Perhaps at least a more diverse range of sketches would be both more relatable and useful to demonstrate the project.

Regardless, I’m not sure what rules of HN I broke to deserve -5 votes for voicing my reaction to a projects landing page.
